I'm hoping to check him out in a couple weeks. He's playing a few miles from my house then. I'll take some video.

Come back to St. Louis, turn on the news and their showing a bunch of Bonner highlights. Team won 44-0 he had at least one TD. Talked about how he is gonna play OLB at Notre Dame

I just don't see him playing olb. He is going to grow into the perfect size for a 3-4 end. Go check out ESPN, they think he is a 3-4 de or 4-3 tackle and they are actually pretty high on him.

I've been waiting for the recruiting news from over the weekend to die down before I posted this so it didn't get buried, but here goes. I went to watch Jonathon play this past Friday when his Parkway Central Colts played at the undefeated Kirkwood Pioneers. I got there about 3 minutes into the game and left with about 5 left in the 4th. Here's a little breakdown of my thoughts and impressions.

First of all, he only came off the field for ST and about 3 offensive plays. That, in it's own right, is impressive.

Offense:

He played TE. Unfortunately, his QB is rather inept, causing Parkway Central to be a run first team. His run blocking was slightly better than average, but nothing too impressive. It's not like he was pushing guys downfield; he doesn't have the size for that. In the time I was at the game, he went 1/1 in receiving. That one reception he had was for about 16 yards for a TD. About 14 of those yards were YAC where he fought off one tackler, stiff armed another, and dove into the end zone from about 3 yards out with a Kirkwood player on his back. He kid can truck and has some speed. A very impressive play from the young man. Overall, his offensive highlights were limited this game, but the one he had showed me he's not afraid of contact and has quite a bit of strength and drive when he wants to.

Defense:

He was out at R end the whole game. Unfortunately, he was matched up against a LT that was a very real 6'6" 315#. Huge kid. And with Bonner being an even 6'4" 250#, he was pretty much neutralized in the run stuffing game. You could kind of tell that it wasn't really his favorite thing to be doing either. Where he really shined was in the pass rushing game. When he wanted to get to the QB, he was blowing by the big LT before he knew what was happening. In the time I was at the game, he had about 4 sacks and 5 hurried passes, 1 or 2 that led to INTs. Where he could use some work is contain. He ended up being sucked in a number of times over pursing, but it's nothing that can't be coached up.

Overall, Bonner is going to be a good kid and an integral part of the squad, but I wouldn't expect him anywhere besides ST for the first few years. He's definitely a project, but his ceiling is high. He needs to bulk up more and be coached up for sure, but he has... wait for it... potential. He was definitely a fan and teacher favorite. I was standing amongst a few of Parkway's teachers and they all had good things to say about him.

On the videos below, he's the one rushing off the right end. Parkway Central is in the white unis. He's #86.

Let me know if these videos don't work. I've never used Photobucket like this before.

If this young man is FAST, that's what I want to hear, and that's what any 21st century DC wants to hear. If he's also nimble {quick-footed, can swivel and change direction} then that's the second thing. Heft and strength can be "managed" into his big frame.

We need the speed everywhere. We need the in-space play, and we need the running-down-the-QB athleticism. The whole of football is moving towards Andrew Luck-style combinations of Stand-and-deliver quarterbacking plus You-make-a-space-coverage-mistake-and-I'll-run-it. Power will still be important, but unless you're Alabama and can recruit every monster OLineman you want [and "mysteriously" keep them in "school"], every other elite team will be required to go with QB mobility.

And THAT's why this update by Peoria is encouraging.

Has solid tape, but I would not be surprised if he gets a look at TE. He's got solid hands and some impressive "wiggle" in his step for a guy 245 Ibs, and also has got some wheels too.

Seeing him live, no. DE is where he belongs. The TEs we have on the roster along with Luatua and Weishar are plenty.

Thought his film was underwhelming. Not great size for a DE, and he's not very explosive, all IMO. Hopefully he has the 'it' factor so he can be a player.

IMO his top end speed is very impressive for his size but like you said Kuehn his burst off the line isn't as good as I hoped. Also don't know if he has the frame to bulk up to a 3-4 DE.

At the game that I watched, his burst was amazing when he wanted it to be. There were a couple times where I blinked and he was on top of the QB. Unfortunately, this was only maybe 10-15% of the time. I think a lot of it is because his opposition would run away from him so frequently that he got bored.

You would be surprised how good kids look next good kids. AJ Tarpley looks good next to Shane Skov.

So this "he didnt look explosive" stuff is a bit premature. I would highly doubt there are many with the jump that Hill and Williams have. Lorenzo Carter doesnt have as a good of a jump as either of those two....but hes a 5 star. Its all about being good at what your good at. Bonner is good at being a freak athlete.

Lorenzo Carter also has a better frame and IMO much better film.

I don't see 'freak athlete' when I watch Bonner. If you do, that's fine and I hope you're right.

I see a big fast kid who is light on his feet and does nothing but play his assignment. Do not want

Yep, very impressed by his feet. He looks much more coordinated than his junior film. Still a little raw but there's a lot to like and work with.

He would need to put on a lot of weight to make it as a 3-4 DE I think. I'd expect him in a CAT role, or maybe come in with his hand in the dirt in a 4-3 look.
