'11 TX CB Jalen Brown (Signed Notre Dame LOI)

Remember when Cooks said he was going to be special and Mike Floyd singled him out at the awards banquet? That seems like ages ago.

So i assume this means a transfer will be coming?

I was really hoping for good things from him.

I think he's pretty much at the top of everyone's most likely to transfer list. Getting passed up by two true frosh will do it more times than not.

Coaches have some hilarious quotes. Remember when Gary Gray was going to be an All-American?

Doesn't he only have one more year before he graduates? Seems like a bonehead move to leave Notre Dame one year before graduation just because you don't like where you are on the depth chart.

It would give us another spot, but transferring to some JuCo for a year could definitely turn into a decision he greatly regrets 10 years from now.

Or he could transfer to a FBS school, get a legit degree, and have two years of eligibility starting in '15, right? That could make some sense. It seems like time here might have passed him by.

Did he redshirt as a freshman? If not then he'd only have one year of eligibility left. Either way, not concerned.

Good that he is sticking around. Because if he left Notre dame would be thin at corner next year. If no Jalen Brown think of this: Russel, Luke, Butler, Kinlaw and Watkins, maybe they move Josh back. Jalen is needed for depth and ST.

Interesting.

To my knowledge Kelly has never admitted before that we didn't invite a 5th year back for purely football reasons. In the past he has said things like, "We don't kick these kids out. We have a discussion with them about what their role will be and ask them if they are willing to accept that role."

Of course, Kelly and ND are always VERY clear, at least in a general way, that players are never guaranteed a 5th year, and we all knew that players who Kelly knows can't contribute usually don't come back for their 5th year, but this is the first case of the Kelly era I can think of in which Kelly has confirmed that a player apparently wanted to come back and we declined to invite him back purely for football reasons.

To be clear, I know this is the result we all expected, but I expected Kelly to say something like, "Jalen has chosen to pursue other opportunities." I am surprised that Kelly publicly confirmed that Jalen wanted to come back and was turned away.

Refreshing honesty? Or twisting the knife in the kid?

Or am I wrong on my facts? Brown was friends with the Atkinsons ... maybe conduct/attitude issues played a part in his not being invited back?

I wouldn't necessarily infer he asked to be back this year.

Didn't he make some kind of deal for 2014 that he could practice with the team but wouldn't play in order to preserve a year of eligibility for transfer?

I thought it untoward.

I think that was Josh Atkinson. Brown did not play as a frosh, so he had a 5th year available already, without having to sit out last year.
