This could be a fun game.

People who have won Time's person of the year:

Stalin, Hitler, MLK, Pope John Paul II.

So am I comparing the Catholic Church to a Nazi organization?
Comparing MLK's outcome on history to that of Stalin's?

The possibilities are endless.

I have a bachelor's degree in English, thank you very much. And the fact that he listed multiple things he views as sinful just compounds his problem and makes him more judgmental. When someone asks you a question about one thing and your answer includes a laundry list of other things that are similar, that is comparing.

Why is my first comment to silly to answer, you said:

So... When I ask my wife what she is getting at the store, when she replies with a "laundry list" of items. Is she comparing things like tampons and laundry detergent? Or would it make more sense that those things are independent items, listed separately?

I don't know... I don't have a Masters in English or anything...

You're obviously just an ignorant bigot who hates black nazi communist pontiffs.

There's your problem. You don't have the authority to define what is or is not "ignorant." In this case, "ignorance" is any belief that differs from yours. If Phil Robertson's comments were ignorant, then the Pope is also ignorant, along with the 45% of Americans (according to Pew) who also believe homosexuality is a sin. My guess is that the number is even higher because the poll does not distinguish between homosexuality itself and homosexual acts. Many Catholics believe that homosexual acts (i.e. "gay sex") are sinful, but simply being homosexual is not.

The entire thread can be summed up in your first three sentences. GoIrish and many who share his mindset really believe they have that authority, and sometimes even determine the consequences too. It's sad.

Neh. You listed them, so they are defacto:

Pancakes=GK'sMamma=hedgehogs.

All loved equally and with vigor.

Oh I guess you're right because people can know what I meant by the way I said it. My mistake.

If you believe that this guy was offering an out of context list of "sins" that had no relation to what the original quesiton was, than I can't help you. You can make the semantic argument, I suppose, but simple logic dictates that he was comparing the "sins" to homosexuality. The question to your wife, above, asks for a laundry list. It doesn't offer a context for which to compare anything. The question from the reporter to Phil did not ask for a list. HE CHOSE to provide one as a means of comparing "sins" to homosexuality. He compounded his problem by doing it in a highly public forum and now he is getting paid in public for his poor judgment.

Maybe it's the format of an "interview" that has you confused. Typically, the interviewer asks the questions and the interviewee answers them. The "difference between you and Phil Robertson," therefore, is that someone cares what he thinks enough to ask him. His only options were to say how he felt or to lie about it.

Well thanks for caring wizards. Incidently, he could have, like I did, refuse to answer the question.

Let me see if I am getting this straight, when I get ready to go to the grocery store and I make up a list, I am comparing all the things I have to get? I am not just going stream of consciousness as I dig thru my cupboards? So, my laundry detergent (top of my list) means more to me than the milk and bread (further down the list)?

EDIT: Sorry Wooly...didn't see your post as I was catching up

He wasn't asked to compare nor said to compare them. He was in fact asked, "what do you consider sins?" So he was, in fact, asked to list them. He listed sins, as an answer to a direct question. Anything outside of that is you simply making an assumption. One that has no basis.

Q: "What do you consider to be things we need from the grocery store?"

A: “Start with TAMPONS and just morph out from there. LAUNDRY DETERGENT, FRANKS AND BEANS AND RICE AND SHAMPOO,” he says. ”

Just so you are aware, one of the sins he stated in his list is a sin that he has admitted to committing. He is not this self righteous jerk you are making him out to be. He is someone that has been there, done that, seen the error of his ways, and repented.

Also, you continue to bring up that he is being vilified by the public, having to pay for his mistake, or whatever different way you have worded this same thought. I would contend that Phil is very comfortable with the fact that his words have sparked conversations. As a believer he is well aware that persecution happens when you stand firm in your belief. He is not one that will backtrack from his "poor judgment", as he does not see the results of this public backlash in the same manner that you think he should.

well...and I would contend the wave of backlash toward Robertson has "boomeranged" on folks...See Cracker Barrel...

now...do you all think there are that many bigots to overrun A&E and Cracker Barrel???? Seriously??? If so explain how the LGBT movement as a whole made progress as they have.

Or maybe is it that despite best efforts from operatives from both sides of the argument to spin, conflate, and infuse things with emotion....common folks are capable of separating issues of rights/law from issues of faith/sin and understand oppression can go in either direction...as Americans should be able to do.

WE MODERATED OURSELVES...HAPPY DAY!

I actually think there are a lot of people like Wooly(not that he is common folk as he is IE royalty) out there on this one. They realize the guy voiced an opinion, it wasn't said in a vile and disgusting manner (like some have made it out to be), and they believe in his freedom to say such things.

So yeah, we moderated ourselves. Let's celebrate!!

If the liberals want to witch-hunt someone they should pick on the PR lady who tweeted about going to Africa and not getting AIDS b/c she's white. I don't think anyone's going to come to her defense.

As much as I love Phil and Duck Dynasty, this issue is about a lot more than this show. It is about the continued degrading of Christian beliefs and 1st amendment rights being trampled on by leftist media. This nation was founded on the principles of free speech and religion. You may not like my views, but damn anyone for trying to censor them.

Agree 1000%

I love the threads where we have two sides convinced of their righteousness. Fuck me I hate the two party system.
