What is the "uniform surprise"?

ND/Jordan > anything UA can possibly design
But being UA's "signature" brand would be pretty awesome also. I agree I would take Nike all day long but I will be happy with UA. Just as long as Adidas is out of the picture I'm good.

For another point supporting UA being the 'it' brand right now, UA's stock has risen from roughly $50 a share to ~$83 over the past year. In the same time span, Nike has increased from roughly $52 a share to ~$76. Quite the disparity in growth there. Just pointing it out. I would enjoy seeing a market plan and presentation from Nike though, just so see what they have in mind.

Am I the only one that likes Adidas? I don't think anyone really appreciates the positives they bring to the table. Sure Nike and Under Armor stuff look nice and are "flashy", but they all. look. the. same. Especially Nike. You know the difference between UGA football shirts and Alabama football shirts? The color. That's it. They all say the same thing (except the school name), they all have the same block font, they all have the same styles, they are the exact same shirts.

Adidas actually makes unique shirts that are different between schools. Tennessee shirts look nothing like ND shirts, which look nothing like Michigan shirts, and I always really appreciated that.

I may be in the minority here, but I'm far more concerned about what the team wears than what I wear. I spend far too much in tuition to be buying that much of it anyway haha.

I'm going to feel stupid if this was already mentioned somewhere, but I have it from an inside source that Nike wants to make us their "Jordan" product of College Football. I.e. huge marketing campaign, yearly unique designs, all of it.

Would be a big mistake to turn down Nike if we leave Adidas IMO.

UA is really making in roads over here too, they have Tottenham in the EPL and a Wales Rugby. I think their stuff is pretty good actually except for the Baby GAP jersey numbers they had on Auburn and South Carolina.

I loved the Northwestern uniforms btw.

Yeah, Their revenue increases have been 20%+ every Qtr since 2010 Qtr2. They really are a very well run company and I think their marketing strategy would be lights out for ND.

If ND feels the need to leave Adidas, UA is the right choice.

That's totally misleading for so many reasons.

1. Nike has far more shares outstanding than UA. I could start a company with two shares at $10 and if each share goes to $200, my entire company is still only worth $400. Nike is a much larger company so Nike's stock price rising $1 represents a significantly greater market capitalization than a $1 increase of Under Armor. Price per share matters to the individual investor, but is useless when evaluating the overall company unless you also consider number of shares outstanding.

2. Comparing percentages would make even less sense because a larger company needs to grow much more to "move the needle." If Disney grows by $1M, that's a rounding error. If Joe's Bait and Tackle grows by $1M, that's 1,000% growth. Being smaller to start with gives you the mathematical average of being able to grow by larger percentages. Nike is ten times the size of Under Armor, so Nike growing 1% (in revenue or net income, not necessarily stock price) is the same as UA growing 10%.

3. I'm not sure if the Class of 2015 at Booker T. Washington or JP2 consult the capital markets to determine what the "it" brand is. I'm guessing it's much more important what Dwayne Wade, Calvin Johnson, and Jay Z are wearing and talking about. Consulting the market is fine for evaluating the company, but evaluating the brand is something else entirely.

All the info that came out today was accurate. UA is the favorite and it's down to UA or Nike.

I don't care how much money UA offers, we can't turn down Nike IMO. Superior brand and their willingness to make us their centerpiece is too valuable.

You don't think ND wouldn't be the centerpiece for UA? UA would have us plastered everywhere, just like Nike. If the gold shoes are an interesting idea to Jack and Brian, there's nothing that says UA can't make them.

The difference is that the "centerpiece" of Nike is a much more prominent pace than the "centerpiece" of UA. It's a $24B company versus a $2B company.

While I agree with the sentiment, I cannot see how we will ever surpass Oregon as Nike's "centerpiece," unless it is Phil Knight that actually donates all the uniforms and equipment etc.

Maryland is already UA's "Oregon". The founder is a Terp alum no?

I read the rumors of ND receiving the Jordan-like branding from Nike. If that is the opportunity out there, then by all means go for it. If it is not that exclusive, then we become another one of Nike's many schools.

With UA we instantly become their centerpiece.

While I am excited at the possibility of ND being Nike's college flagship...

Unless Nike wants to put obligations in writing do we really believe this sales pitch or is this just the same thing they told USC, Alabama, Texas, etc?

Nike is a business first and foremost. Phil Knight helps out Oregon as much as he can but it's not a charity. They have shareholders and a deal with ND would be huge for Nike from a business perspective.

It's possible...but while Texas/Bama have a huge fan base they are still essentially regional. ND brand spans the globe.

Wizard, all your points are great if you are trying to look at which stock to buy, but the growth of UA is still undeniable. I mean, I remember in high school 8 or so years ago, all UA was for us was pretty much the heat gear or cold gear shirts. And just about everyone who was anyone has one of those because they worked so well. Now, 8 years later, it is everywhere and kids and consumers as a whole are eating it up.

Also, if you want to take into account one of the points you made, Since UA (Joe's Bait and Tackle) grew roughly $33 in a year and Nike (Disney) grew roughly $24 in a year, wouldn't that be a bigger splash for UA supporting the argument they are the ones growing faster?

Unless Nike is going to make a brand called "Irish" ND will not be college football's Jordans. Being Jordan is about being in a league of your own and even if Nike makes ND their flagship which is being the best among your peers, it is still a step below being Jordans.

That would be pretty damn cool IMO, but it would also be one more feather in the cap of ND bashers - I could see it being ammo for saying that ND is so elitest they "demand their own clothing brand" within a company.

Love it... :)
For that reason alone I hope Nike is the choice.

Agree

Maryland is already UA's "Oregon". The founder is a Terp alum no?

And ( <---- sorry Dshans) ND would supplant them. When you think of major players in college football, Maryland isn't even in the top 30.

I really don't care either way, but I don't think it would hurt us if we went UA. Nike is a lot larger company due to age, but I see UA plastered everywhere around Indy. They're out there marketing their products. When I look at Nike gear and UA gear, I really don't see a significant difference between the two. Either option is a win.
