cam is our leading rusher. you dont see him as an incumbent starter based on productivity?

this is a tad rhetorical because i think TF, at this point, can overtake everyone we have--and GB--if stays and healthy, can push for 8-10 carries out of the gate.

No doubt he sees playing time, and he's done more than a lot of people expected he could. It's just that Folston has shown that he's definitely the real deal, and if Bryant is half the player most people expect it'll be hard to keep him off the field. McDaniels to me is like the Rees of RB's--probably won't take us to the promised land but if you need him, you're sure as hell glad you have him.

Like most here, I'm in agreement that we move Carlisle to the slot next year (he can still get a carry or two a game from there), and push GA back to a the role he had last year where he gets 3-6 carries a game and hopefully breaks a big one every once in a while. Folston/Bryant should be splitting carries ideally, and Cam gets his carries when a back is dinged up or late in a game.

I agree with all points here, except in relation to Cam's role and Bryant. I know he's been injured, but Bryant has had, what, 2 carries this season? What has he shown that makes us think he's ready to be splitting the starting carries at this point if he was healthy? I think he should have to earn that opportunity, much like Folston has earned increased carries by the way he's handled what's been given to him in games and in practice I'm sure.

Which I think is why Cam is a great garbage time RB and is more than serviceable in a pinch. He'll get the job done at the times when you don't want to risk your starters, which is pretty valuable.

He's more than a great garbage time RB, he's the leading rusher. Aside from a great game against Navy from Folston, Cam has been the most consistent back on the team this year hands down.

I feel like we've all had this discussion a thousand times, but based on what we've seen this year from Folston, I don't think its realistic to say that he'd start and Folston would have to split carries behind him. Cam is our Tommy Rees at running back, minus the maddening interceptions. He does everything right, and gets the job done, but doesn't have that special something that separates 'solid' or 'good' players from championship players.

Folston at the very least has the potential to be something Cam isn't. He looked like it against Navy. Has Cam McDaniel ever been that dynamic? Simply put, as much as everyone loves Cam McDaniel, you're kidding yourself if you don't realize that Folston is very, very likely to be a better player.

Does Cam need to be dynamic to be successful? Folston will be the better player when all is said and done, and he's really coming on at a great time for us right now. Right now I'd put Cam at 1a and Folston at 1b (As oppose to GAIII/Carlisle in those spots at the beginning of the year), but I want to see how Folston does against tougher competition before I push him to the top.

This is how I feel. Cam has proven that he's earned his spot, and thats why he saw his carries increase from just garbage carries to a heavier workload. No one else has proved they deserved their spot in the backfield, other than TF coming on late and getting rewarded with the extra carries. TF is making the case that he can be the #2 guy with the way he's running right now. We don't know enough about GB right now other than women think he's cute in a uniform. If he gets healthy and can prove himself with limited carries like Folston has, then maybe he solidifies a spot for himself.

I think a lot of them aren’t “names” now because they went to SC and got lost in the shuffle but all of these guys were high four stars or higher, in fact I think most of them were five stars… and while I can’t tell you which class they were all from I’m pretty sure almost all of these guys were on the roster at around the same time, meaning all within a four-five year cycle, competing against each other… starting right AFTER they got done with Bush and White for crying out loud... just a sick run of talent at RB... AND I may have forgotten some...

Stafon Johnson
Kenny Ashley
Emmanuel Moody
Stanley Havili
Joe McKnight
Chauncey Washington
Marc Tyler
Dillon Baxter
Soma Vainuku

now while our backs are better than most teams EVER dream of having, they don't live up to the above, which is a REAL hard run to live up to in fairness.

I grew up with Marc Tyler...funny story, I ran into him over a Christmas break one year I believe after what would've been his RS Soph year and he said that if he could've done it all over again, that he would've been Irish along with Jimmy. I don't know whether he was just saying that because I went to ND because I'm not sure how we could compete with the "University of Sexual Ballers"...

I wish there was some way to teach these guys that you break bread over the course of your life not just for a few years.

There is zero evidence thus far that Carlisle would be good in the slot. He's got the necessary speed/shiftiness... but his hands have been no better than GAIII.

Considering the surplus of talent at WR, combined with the guys potentially coming in, I don't see the reason to move a guy to the slot and take reps away from the guys who have been working there full time.

So has something changed here to increase the talks of the naked lap, or are we just spinning our wheels here?

Yes, Jimmy was ESPNs cover boy and "prospect of the decade" when all assumed he was going to SC... once he verballed to ND the song was, "Eh he plays really poor competition at his high school, ND is overrating him with this decade talk (that we started)." They then knocked their 'once a generation prospect' down out of the top five for that YEAR and came up with a new #1 overall prosepct... that prospect was Jimmy's very own teammate... Marc Tyler.

I have great hopes, based on at least SOME vague "data", that Greg Bryant will be a terrific RB and be ready for all that next season with no problems. Bryant was early in his remarks of the importance of him BLOCKING well. That tells me what I need to know about whether he'll be fully prepared.

I also agree that Folston seems to be the real deal. Whether it has been service academies or not, you can tell something about jump-and-wiggle in the hole regardless, plus as soon as he's back planted on the ground, he's in power mode. ... and how long has it been since we had an effective jump-over-everyone-into-the-endzone back?

But for those who continue to degrade the playing value of Cam McDaniel, two words: ROCKY BLEIER. Obviously a bum, eh? No eye test for him right? Just do everything right, lay everything you've got on the field, ... and just win, baby.

Best comparison on this board in a long time.

I love the comparison and somewhat valid too as Cam usually goes through the center of the line. For those of you too young to remember, and I am guessing that is a good portion of you as the 1970's were a ways back anymore, Rocky was no where near a race around end kind of runner. The Steelers had Franco Harris for that.

I think Cam started the season more of a "blue collar" back, but he just runs like a good, determined back now. He's pretty fast, makes good cuts, and gets yards at the end. He has ripped off some long runs too. The reps he's gotten have brought a lot of confidence.

I agree that Folston has good speed and wiggle, and excellent RB instincts (falls foward), However, I'm not sure I see "power." He runs tough, like Armando Allen, but he is not running through people.

I still think GB will be the best of the bunch, but I think that he and TF will both be studs.

I'd still like a back, like Hood or Scarborough, who really punishes the tackler.

Mike, a chara,

Your Rocky Bleier comparison is brilliant. I could have never come up with that! But I had all the information including watching him run for the Irish. Rocky ran more forward leaning to get his pads down with Pittsburg. Before his Viet Nam injuries, he ran just like Cam, or at least Cam ran just like him.

But, Mike, you are clearly one if the finest men on this site. Clearly a cut above the rest. So many cuts above me. As incredulous as I am that I didn't see the comparison between Rocky and Cam, I am out and out jealous that I couldn't find a way to weave such find verbage as the highlighted text into a post of mine. That "jump-and-wiggle in the hole comment was just a boggish thing to say!

Finally, the best thing about your post was that you adequately described the speed, power, and athleticism in the package that is Tarean Folston! Go raibh maith agat! Téigh Gaeilge!

Beir bua agus beannacht,

Bogs

Rocky is perhaps my favorite ND graduate who happened to play football. A shining example of the "Notre Dame Man."

Hated the Steelers but loved Rocky. Great example of a player overcoming some tough odds to make it.

Met rocky a few years ago where he was the guest speaker. We talked for quite a while and I was blown away. Classiest man I ever met. Had massive hands that were like huge pillows.

Cool to see Greg and Tarean hanging with with each other. For some reason I always thought they weren't close.
