If he's cool with playin linebacker great. If he is dead set on playing running back we have higer priority needs in my opinion.

While I agree there are more pressing needs. The two really have nothing to do with each other. We have plenty of schollies to bring in ILB's, DL, or any other position of need. The problem with ILB recruiting is none of the guys we want, want to come here. It has nothing to do with spot availability.

his recruitment in terms of more upside at a linebacker position vs RB is very similar in terms of size/athleticism/speed

if we get another chance at an Anthony Barr type player...i'd flip!!

Thing is, we all like to say look at what Bama does and copy it...well if that's the case, we need to be DEEP at RB. That's something they are all about and always have been.

Yet everyone wants to complain about using 5 RBs.

Bama doesn't use 5 RBs but they have them to use. Committee of 2 yes anymore no, unless it's a blowout.

No but they have kids like Drake on the scout team and battle the 1st team D, earn cred, and then get touches at the 2 deep and produce in the games. That is what we need.

Interesting point. Who has been playin scout team QB for ND this year? Might have somethig to do with some of the defensive problems.

Walk-on Will Cronin and Rashad Kinlaw.

I think Kinlaw. Zaire has been working with Hendrix and Rees prior to the mono issue.

I believe that academics are not an issue. I believe that the coaches at Bo's former school had a lot to do with him leaving Tuscaloosa and enrolling at IMG and where he is at in recruiting. I believe that to say his commitment to Bama is soft, is an understatement. I also believe that ND has a lot better chance than anyone thinks. Does that mean ND will get him? No. But id say they are running 2A or 2B with a team in the lead.

Am I the only one who thinks Bo Scarbrough's sophomore highlights were just as impressive, maybe more impressive, then Hood's junior highlights?

I believe this makes me happy.

tj says we are recruiting him as offensive athlete, RB first maybe receiver. Thinks he'll be a hard get away from UF or Bama but we've got a shot. Has a great relationship with Tony Alford.

Something that Mike Frank talked about this or last week is how hard it is for some non-SEC/Bama teams to get ahold of a lot of the Bama/southern kids (I know he's not there now). A lot of the coaches down there have connections to the universities for a variety of reasons. He gave the example of how a lot of coaches don't make much money, but are brought on to coach at a camp at the university, and get paid for that. Then there is the understanding they are to only really accept calls from certain schools for their top tier players. It was an interesting thought and one they were hinting at what was going on with Bo before this season I believe.

This isn't unique to the SEC/Bama. It's provincial. It happens in the ACC, PAC 10, Big 12 areas as well. HS coaches get to know where their bread is buttered. South Carolina coaches respond better to SCA and Clemson. Texas HS coaches respond better to SWC school's coaches than they do to OU, KSU, or Nebraska.

During the latter part of the Holtz era, ND had a lot of success recruiting TX because of relationships Davie had built up during his A&M days.

Right. I wasn't meaning to make so it specific to that conference. That was just his insinuated example for this specific recruit (I'm 95% sure. It could be another from that neck of the woods, but either way). Just brought it up as an interesting note for part of the story.

Now why can't ND of now get more of these coaches on their side, dag nabbit!

Precisely.
Trouble is, we don't really have a geographic backyard, certainly not beyond Indiana. It doesn't even seem to extend to Chicago. We've developed a few pipeline-ish high school programs, but they're scattered from Virginia to Florida to, lately, Fresno. I guess that's the flip-side curse of recruiting nationally.

But it doesn't seem like we really struggle to get in the door with kids we want. Notre Dame has a lot to offer. It often seems that the issue is more about getting them out of their comfort zone enough to actually come here. As long as we're a Catholic school in northern Indiana where you have to go to class, I'm not sure what you do about that.

I would be hard pressed to imagine that ND would ever incorporate that kind of recruiting strategy. That is one of the positives that kids love about the ND staff is that they are open and honest. Obviously they try to run a tighter ship when a kid is committed aka Jerry Tillery. But Jaylon was still talking to ohio st, usc after his commitment for long time.

Well dammit. Maybe that is the next tradition we should break.

As was posted in another thread will get a visit from Alford this week and come for USC next weekend. In response to a question of the BGI board Loy said "l'm telling you....Notre Dame has a real shot here."

There was an update last week on BamaOnline that basically said there were 0 concerns about him ending up anywhere other than Bama.

Then why does everywhere else consider Florida even odds with Alabama?
