He lives an hour from campus and hasn't been on campus in how long? But yet seems to visit Ole Miss and Vandy monthly. That's how interested he is.

In fairness those monthly trips to Ole Miss and Vandy are probably pretty epic "socially".

Yeah...this is my take too. It's one of those recruits that you see the bump and you open the thread with low expectations.

Apparently looking to visit ND again this fall. That's at least what his dad told Wiltfong. I have said for a long time that Morgan's "interest" in ND was really his dad's interest but we shall see.

Isn't that also what we all said about Elijah and his dad? Look where he wound up. Just sayin...

I think that's what he meant. Elijah's going to UNC. Difference here is that Nyles seems to be calling the shots on his recruitment and Elijah never really was, Dad just played along for awhile.

Once again

Ole Miss holds the top spot for Morgan and with Vandy in second. Dad told Wiltfong that we'll get an official visit but they can't make the USC game. We are looking to make another run here. He is going to take all 5 officials. Florida, Michigan State, Tennessee and Texas A&M are still in the mix as well.

One (or two) of these things = not like the others. He sure sounds SEC-bound. But, no harm in trying.

FOREIGN. LANGUAGE. REQUIREMENT.

Makes you wonder how inflexible Admissions really is. Why can't a kid take it in summer school?

I could be wrong, Whiskey, but with this kid he was either offered the option in the summer and declined, or he needed two credits not one. Like he had no foreign language in high school at all. I remember some posters commenting on that with surprise.

That would have been too much to make up in one summer. As it played out I think he was taking, or trying to take an online course that may not have been fully accredited, or could not have been certified in time and then fell into the trap of still needing another language course that first summer.

From what I have heard a number of prospects have turned away at having to take a foreign language and calculus that first summer.

Concerning the foreign language requirement...
It makes you wonder what some of these high school are teaching these kids. I mean, foreign language classes and algebra are pretty basic classes. How in the heck can they graduate high school without it? Is it just me here?

I don't know the structure in Canada but in Indiana and I know in other states foreign language requirements are not required to graduate high school with the basic diploma. Indiana also offers Core40 (40 core credits that if you pass with a C+ average you are guaranteed acceptance into a state school e.g. IU Purude) and Honors Diploma (if you dont get into your college of choice with this its because your gpa is garbage). Core40 does not require foreign language specifically it requires:

Part 2 – DIRECTED ELECTIVES – 5 Credits
Any combination of the following classes:
WORLD LANGUAGES French, German, Japanese, Latin, or Spanish
*Only World Languages taken during grades 9 – 12 will fulfill the Directed Elective Core 40 Requirement.

FINE ARTS Art, Music, Dance, or Drama
CAREER/TECHNICAL Business, Family & Consumer Science, Technology Ed.,
or Technical /Career

Or in other words you can take art, music and dance to fulfil your 5 credits avoiding foreign language all together.

The honors diploma requires 2 years of foreign language (fulfilling ND's admission requirement). However, this is the minimum diploma earned in Indiana.

I can't speak for all of Canada, but in Quebec(french high schools) you have to take English every year of high school(foreign language).

That would be from grade 7 to 11.

Spanish is an option, which a lot of people take.

You also have to do a math class every year. Some are harder than others.

Basically you fulfill all the basic requirements for American Universities by grade 11.

You have to go to Cegep(pre-university) for 2 years to have the AP+ curriculum, which is required for Quebec Universities. Cegep is not our best invention I would say.

I like your system better, personally, but it baffles me sometimes how these kids don't have basic curriculum. There might not be enough basic mandatory classes for graduation.

We really suck at teaching foreign languages in the States though. And since we suck at it, it doesn't make a whole hell of a lot of sense to make the students take it, when they aren't going to learn anything anyway.

A joke I once heard (reps to anyone who can name the comedian):

"English and Americans say, 'Two languages in one head ... no one can LIVE at that speed!'
And Europe says, 'But the Dutch speak four languages ... and smoke marijuana ....' "

It does not make sense to me either how kids are not having to take a foreign language. Here in New Mexico kids start Spanish as a foreign language as early as kindergarten (or for those ESL students, English). There is no way to avoid that in elementary school much less middle or high school. Even 25 years ago when I was in high school I had Spanish every single year. I ended up testing out of Spanish as a Freshmen at ND. Not requiring some kind of foreign language is yet another huge disservice to kids in our school system.

Sounds like something Bill Hicks would say. But it is Eddie Izzarrd.

In non-English speaking countries do they have high school course requirements dedicated to their native language or is English just so complex that native speakers need to take English classes every year?

In my opinion a year or two of Latin in middle school coupled with a strict grammar teacher who isn't afraid to make you look like an idiot for using such abominations like "would of," "I seen," "did good," etc is all one really needs.
