According to II Luke is moving ahead of Lo Wood for the nickel back role. Very impressive freshman. This whole class could be special.

I know I have stated this before, but he reminds me so much of Cliff Harris with his big play ability and body type. Also hope him or TJ Jones return punts.

Surprised about Lo Wood. He was slated to start last year and now he can't crack the nickle? IDK what to think about that.

I'm not surprised. I like Lo but he was starting last year because we had no one other than him until he was injured. My guess is they tried to big him up to help with his confidence. Not trying to be a dick, it's just what I think.

Every time I think of Lo Wood I will always think about when Robert Woods just abused him for a touchdown.

Luke is such a pure CB and moves around the field so well. Underrated commit since we were kinda out of it for him one day and then got back in it and things went quickly. I'm very pro Cole World/ Luke Island.

Pete Sampson is gonna look really dumb if he thought Lo would start and he's 4th on the CB depth chart instead

I don't want to look ahead but we are looking at KVR and Cole Luke as our 2014 corner backs. Oh boy

I'm a little surprised too, at least the fact he might get beaten out for Nickle. I didn't see him starting over KV or BJ given the invaluable experience they got last year. That tells you how weak our secondary probably was to start the season last year if Lo can't work his way into the depth chart despite him slated to be the starter last year.

I'm pleasantly surprised by this. I was high on Luke as a recruit but did not expect him to play meaningful minutes this year.

I like Lo, and think he'll have an important roll on this team, but people's perception of him went through an incredible transformation after the 2011 season and then again after that Rivals article. He was not a big time recruit, a kid who got a lot of early playing time, or a kid who was pushing the upperclassman.

It isn't like Lo had really won the job in a competition. He was the guy by default, and a lot of what was coming out of ND at that time about him seemed like a pretty naked attempt to pump his tires. If Lo hadn't gotten hurt (and KR had still been moved to corner), KR would have beaten Lo out last year as a true freshman who was recruited to play offense. And not to sound mean, but the possibility that KR wouldn't have moved to corner might make Lo's injury his biggest contribution to the program during his time here. None of that is to say that he is terrible or I don't like him. He is good depth and I'm sure he will contribute in some capacity this year if he's healthy. I just think the guys ahead of him are more talented and we are better off with them playing.

I think that was more by default because of lack of depth at the position than anything else.

I haven't been paying much attention to the overall depth chart for the CBs, can someone fill me in. Does moving ahead of Wood mean Luke has a chance to be the starter, or just that Luke will be the #2 or #3 nickel and Wood is now behind him? I.e., what is the depth at CB/nickel/dime look like and where do J Atkinson and J Brown stand at nickel or CB depth?

(mods if you want to move this q to another thread, ok, sorry if it doesn't belong here.)

if it's true that Luke is moving into the "starting" nickel role, that says that he's very good for another reason --- we've been using safeties for that role previously, so Luke is better than all the non-starting safeties [that means either Shumate or Collingsworth, plus Hardy and Redfield] also.

Sounds like good news to me.

Wood was our #3 CB, behind Russell and Jackson. If Luke (as a freshman) has passed him for the Nickle role, that means that Luke: (1) is very good; and (2) is probably in the 2-deep at CB, too.

Though Kelly has favored Safeties at Nickelback in the past, so passing Wood for that role doesn't mean Luke is now the #1 NB. I'd assume Collinsworth and/or Redfield is probably still ahead of him.

When we go to a dime back it'll be a safety likely Collingsworth.

Yep. Most of the time there's a big difference between the #11 CB in the country (Luke) and the #44 CB in the country (Wood), according to Rivals.

Both should have been ranked higher IMO. Like prob about #7 and Wood prob around #20.

Ultimate derp. #NeverForget

It isn't like he'd be called out in hindsight, either. EVERYONE said he was dumb at the time. Hard to imagine that he follows this team for a living.

Sampsons a pimp...he lost a lot of his access when the Kelly Team came in.
TP here is more connected than Sampson-it amazes me that people still pay for II, him and Prister are lucky to have TJ34 over there.
