I can't imagine trying to get this behemoth of a man to swim:

As someone who has spent most of the summer teaching my kids how to swim, I can't imagine this encounter being any less awkward as I've pictured in my mind. Props to Manti for being who he is - a leader of men - and props to Fluker for allowing Manti to take him out of his comfort zone and teach him how to swim. Manti is my favorite athlete of all time, bar none.

Apparently Manti has been very impressive thus far. Excited to see him and Eifert play.

I hope he rips it up for 2 reasons.

1) Because he's Manti and I love Manti.

2) To shut the F'ing mouths of all the naysayers (read: Idiots).

There is one overly positive post below the article, and it's not well received. And an overwhelming number of negative posts.

Really hope Te'o can be successful and prove haters wrong.

"SAN DIEGO -- Playing for the first time in a regular season game, San Diego Chargers rookie middle linebacker Manti Te'o said he was more relieved than nervous.

Te'o made a tackle on running back DeMarco Murray for a 10-yard gain on the opening play, and just missed notching his first career sack on a Tony Romo rollout, with teammate Kendall Reyes hauling down the Dallas quarterback for a 4-yard loss instead.

“Initially, I was way more relaxed than I was that first preseason game,” Te’o said. “I felt more comfortable, and that had to do with the preparation we all did. I was just relaxed, and focused. And luckily I got a tackle my first play in, and that got the rest of the jitters out. After that, it was just football.”
Chargers linebacker Manti Te'o saw his first action in the regular season against the Cowboys Sunday.
Te’o had not played in a game since San Diego’s preseason opener Aug. 7 because of a sprained foot. Predictably, San Diego coach Mike McCoy limited the Notre Dame product’s reps. Te’o split time with fellow linebacker Reggie Walker. In limited duty, Te’o finished with three tackles." Espn

Great to see he's off to a good start!!

I thought he was just okay, as expected for a rookie. There were more than a few times he got taken out of the play by good blocking, but once he improves on that, he will shine.

As a Notre Dame fan it's in my blood to expresses the negative. He missed some tackles. Other than that not bad.

Had a good pass break-up that was a near interception early in the game too. He may get swallowed up at times, but he seemed to always be around the ball. I miss that this year w/ the ND defense. I think most of us expected a slight drop-off, but our current ILBs don't hold a candle to this man.

Agree. Got so pissed when he missed a tackle on Richardson (who he could have lit up), Luck (also), and others. I keep forgetting he is a rookie and the pace of play is lightyears faster.

Yep, I really did not realize how much he meant to our defense last year. Our defense has been pretty good but we've definitely been vulnerable to short passes in the middle of the field in a way that we weren't last year.

Nice little write-up on Te'o calling the defensive plays. I'm glad to see they trust him enough to wear the in-helmet speaker so early in his NFL career.

Manti Te'o handles larger mental load | UTSanDiego.com

Manti Te'o played his third NFL game Monday night.

The first two were nothing like the last.

The Chargers inside linebacker was asked to shoulder extra responsibility against the Colts, as inside linebacker Donald Butler (groin) and outside linebacker Jarret Johnson (hamstring) were inactive. The increased role was a large step up for the rookie, who has been eased back from a preseason foot injury that sidelined him about six weeks

Johnson returned to practice Wednesday, a positive early sign for his availability Sunday against the Jaguars. Butler rested and rehabbed.

Usually, in games, Butler wears the in-helmet speaker on defense, relaying plays from coordinator John Pagano to the huddle.

On Monday, it was Te'o.

"If you call the wrong play, everybody's going to play the wrong play," Te'o said. "Everything is on you. You're the only one with the mic out there. Nobody else can tell you, 'That's the wrong call.' You have to hear it, deliver the message, make the checks. That's a lot of responsibility."

Pagano had him practice with the mic in the days leading up to the game.

The second-round pick said those reps helped, and he grew more comfortable with the role as the game progressed.

Te'o also had some of Johnson's responsibilities on his plate He typically can rely on Johnson to set the defensive alignment, making strength calls or moving the fronts, he said. Much of that job fell on Te'o, who credited Andrew Gachkar for helping handle the extra work.

"Manti was going to take care of that," Gachkar said, referring to alignment. "I was going to take care of certain checks we had for certain plays. If it was base or it was nickel, then we had certain lines that needed to be checked or maybe set the blitz somewhere. But that would be the both of us. We tried to share the work. We love talking out there. That's kind of our thing."

Although I'm a Colts fan, I tried to keep an eye on Te'o during the game. He did whiff on one run up the middle, but to me that's to be expected as a rookie. Overall I thought he had a decent game.
