I can see your point, but my counter point is quite simply.

There is NO chance in God's creation that this kid commits to ND. IF he does, I will stand on the 50 yard line of ND stadium in my birthday suit next season. He saw ND at its ugliest. The coaching sucked, the fans were immature and disgusting, the weather was horrible. You will get to see Manti for 4 years on TV, not in South Bend.
