The shoes thing was still obviously deliberate

even so... shoes would lift Malik at 6' to hitting at the top of their chins, as opposed to the bottom. Those are some big boys.

And it looks like they're developing chemistry already. I personally think that's an underrated component of the best Olines. Can't wait to see them in action.

It comes as no surprise, but that picture made me smile like almost nothing else regarding new additions to the Notre Dame arsenal has been able to.

OLine Power.... Football Nirvana.

He and McGovern have absolute tree trunks. Elmer looks slim by comparison.

Bivin is freaking huge. Look how high his shoulders are, with that squat neck. He's effectively almost as big as McGlinchey. He's a guy who can actually "play bigger" than 6'7". It's crazy that he's also thick enough and can get low enough to play interior OL.

Tuitt's comment and Malik's answer are hilarious.

Is Malik not wearing shoes to increase the effect? He looks tiny in relation. Like Kevin Hart at the Celebrity All Star Game

Well Malik is only 6'!", compared to Bivin who is like 6'6". So it seems about right

Malik looks to be all of 6'1" to me and someone else who saw him.

With Justin Brett we proved shoes make a 1 1/2 inch difference, (6'3" to 6'1 3/4") lol.

Standing three feet in front of a group, depending on the focal point of the camera and how high (or low) it is being held, can make a huge difference (like 30-40%) in a subjects height compared to the group.

And Bivin is ALL of 6'6". Last year I saw him standing next to Corey Robinson, (after he blocked out the sun, and he looked to be 2 to 3 inches taller that CR. Even if CR was only 6'4" then, that would have had him pushing 6'7" in his junior year.

Haha this. I was going to say that McGlinchey may have gigantic calves/legs, but Elmer has those illustrious tapered ankles that coaches look for.

Elmer def. looks much more athletically built than the others, but man those are some beasts. Bivin is built like a rhino.

Exactly. He should be a natural pass blocker with those legs and long arms. Tuitt will help uncover which one of these boys is ready to play. It'll be fun to watch these guys compete when camp starts.

Unlike most other positional situations [where Kelly always begins with past starters plus upperclassmen fill-ins as opening practices "first teams", and we have to wait a while for the real first team to sort out], Coach Harry doesn't seem to be messing around. He put Ronnie Stanley right in there at LT and Mike McGlinchey at RT. That meant putting Steve Elmer at Watt's spot and leaving Lombard at "his" RG position... what a whopper of a physical line. Hegarty got center, but it seems 90% likely to be place-holding for NMart --- I say this because when a reporter made some goof about NMart radically switching somewhere else, Kelly looked at him like he had two heads and said "he's the center"... not he's A center, mind you, but THE center. Things can change but it may be that we already know the OLine starters.

This then leaves us with the cases of Hunter, Connor, and Matt, who seem to be positioned as the "next men in". Matt is going to be a superior back-up center, it seems. Connor seems to be the back-up guard. Hunter, who I thought might get into the starting front with Elmer at tackle, is now the clear back-up tackle --- something to do with shifting to #70 maybe as well. McGlinchey is apparently just WAY too good to keep off the field.

All-in-all, if our OLine is so good that Matt Hegarty and Hunter Bivin can't start,...wow.

Kelly does seem to have a bromance for NMart. Everytime he talks about him he gushes.

I was very impressed with Hanratty's work at the end of last season when spelling Elmer. In fact, I felt that he was a temporary upgrade over the true freshman, and a definite upgrade over Lombard. I was hoping that if Elmer were to stay at guard, he and Hanratty could lock down either side of Nick Martin.

And don't get me wrong, Lombard is no slouch; the fact that you could have a Lombard as a backup would show just how awesome the future of the o-line should be. But I do think at times that he struggles with moving his feet, and that leads to more "visible" blown assignments than other linemen had. I simply think Elmer offers an athletic upgrade over Lombard, and Hanratty a consistency upgrade over Lombard.

Agree with everything you said. Remembering that this is only spring and they have to really begin to understand the players next to them, I want to see what Montelus is capable of. He seems like such a steamroller. And while highly doubtful they displace any of our top 8 linemen, we have a top 5 offensive line with 5 star in Quenton Nelson coming in the summer to increase competition.

I'm not a shiny new toy guy but Montelus really excites me with his massive frame and Hegarty seemed to really grow into the position last year. I'll be surprised if we don't have a rotation going on to allow our players to develop key depth before the Stanford, UNC, Florida State grouping.

I'm just most excited about that fact that we could see two separate, fully-functional offensive line units if HH/BK so desired. The depth along the o-line is better than I've seen it since I began to appreciate football. Last year was close with the top 8 guys, but this year the numbers/"redshirt" situations actually allow for guys to play without worrying about "losing" time.

Initially it looks like: Stanley - Elmer - Martin - Lombard - McGlinchey
Followed next by: Bivin - Hanratty - Hegarty - Montelus - McGovern

If Montelus is full-go, you've got ten guys that aren't worried about saving elegibility that are all available, and that excludes Harrell. If any of the freshmen hogs come in ready to participate immediately (Nelson, Bars, Byrne, Mustipher), that's icing on the cake.

Man that whole unit looks amazing now that I've typed it out.

I think we'll see some changes as the season goes on. Don't think we'll see wholesale line switches like in hockey, but I can see HH rotating guys in during the first half to have the first team ready to dominate the second half.

Remember that Lombard had a problem finding the target for his kick out block when he was pulling. We don't know what kind of technique problem like this could affect the depth chart. (with a moving offense, you need a rapidly moving offensive line, when the stop prematurely, they gum up everything, better than the other teams defensive linemen.)

And Kelly keeps intimating there will be a third tackle on the field at times, and he has now elevated that to a tackle eligible!
