Possible trouble for USCe and Clowney ahead? Jay-Z Talks to Clowney about Roc Nation Sports on the Regular

This is just breaking, but things could get very interesting over the next few days for the Gamecocks.

Also this tweet from the Forbes Business guy

According to @InsideTheLeague Jadeveon Clowney is in regular contact with Jay Z & will likely end up choosing Roc Nation Sports.

? Darren Heitner (@DarrenHeitner) July 22, 2013

I am not sure how legit any of this is, but this would definitely be a violation.

Would just talking to Jay-Z be a violation? I wouldn't think so.

But yeah, if Clowney signs with Roc Nation while he's in school then yeah it definitely would be but I don't even think he is that dumb to do that.

He is just talking to him and will sign after his junior year IMO

Recruiting someone to sign to an agency in the future isn't a violation? Idk, seems odd to me.

I was under the impression that even talking to an agent was a violation. But I could be totally wrong.

It is very much a grey area. From what I understand Jay-Z isn't really an agent, he is just the owner and/or benefactor of Roc Nation. If that gets through a loophole or not I have no idea but I am guessing nothing will likely come of it.

NCAA bylaws

Under NCAA Bylaw 12.3, a student-athlete (any individual who currently participates in or who may be eligible in the future to participate in intercollegiate sport) may not agree verbally or in writing to be represented by an athlete agent in the present or in the future for the purpose of marketing the student-athlete's ability or reputation. If the student-athlete enters into such an agreement, the student-athlete is ineligible for intercollegiate competition.

Also, a student-athlete may not accept transportation or other benefits from an athlete agent. This prohibition applies to the student-athlete and his or her relatives or friends.

The term "agent" includes actual agents, runners (individuals who befriend student-athletes and frequently distribute impermissible benefits) and financial advisors.

It is not a violation of NCAA rules if a student-athlete merely talks to an agent (as long as an agreement for agent representation is not established) or socializes with an agent. For example, a student-athlete could go to dinner with an agent and no NCAA violations would result if the student-athlete provided his own transportation and paid for his meal.

Jay-Z officially a certified MLB, NBA agent

Jay-Z officially became a certified baseball agent, the Major League Baseball Players Association confirmed Thursday morning to USA TODAY Sports, enabling Jay-Z to negotiate a deal for New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano whenever he wishes.

Addtionally, Ron Berkowitz, a spokesman for Roc Nation Sports, confirmed Jay-Z has been certified by the National Basketball Players Union to serve as an agent. Roc Nation Sports president Juan Perez was also certified.

Jay-Z is not a licensed NFL agent, and he has not applied for certification with the NFL Players Association.

There was some question during the Geno Smith saga about whether Jay Z qualified as a runner as defined by the NFLPA, but that clearly isn't what his role is at the company. From what I understand, the NFLPA is much more strict about its agent licensing than the other sports, so Roc Nation uses a woman named Kim Miale to represent their NFL clients.

As far as Clowney goes, I suspect that a player and an agency that are both as high profile as they are would be very aware of the rules and would bump right up against them without actually crossing over the line.

These are facebook posts from Louis Nix in a college football talk group.

Louis Nasty-Dawg Nix III Agents and runners can now talk to draft eligible players all they want. Also he will play.

Louis Nasty-Dawg Nix III Nope, they changed the rule. i think because it would make the process of picking a agent easier. I meet with agents on a weekly bases to figure out which i like. i cant officially choose till after the season. its like recruiting....He cant accept anything only talk to them.

Personally, I dont want anything to happen to Clowney. I want to watch him crushing QB's and RB's this season. He is a fantastic player and fun to watch. They will not challenge for a NC this year, but Clowney will be fun to watch.

Anything to help an SEC team lose. I'm officially on the hate train this year. Tired of dealing with their sh*ttalk. Anytime a SEC team is playing a non-SEC team, I'm rooting for the non.

This is only a violation if Jay Z was flying out to parties or buying him dinner or giving any other sort of benefit (I think... but I'm not an expert on this).

EDIT: nvm... PANDFAN nailed it.

Agreed, but what took you so long? I root for a non-SEC team ALL THE TIME. They're the best conference in America, no doubt, but their pathetically weak non-conference schedules, especially in the mid 2000's when they were building their conference (including dodging USC's REPEATED requests to play after watching USC dismantle Auburn and Arkansas), makes me root against them with a passion.

The only time I rooted for an SEC team was when Bama played Michigan. I'd even root for USC against an SEC team, and I hate USC with a white-hot passion (but my allegiances to the west coast would probably shift me towards USC in that game. Or I'd just stand in front of a train during the game. Not sure).

It has really been the UGA(95%) fans that make me feel the same way. I have listened to the last "SEC,SEC,SEC..." chant with out trying to disrupt it. GEORGIA DOMER = SEC HATRED!!!

I could not do that. There are 4 teams I can not root for under any circumstances; Michigan, Alabama, U$C and Ohio State.

Take out Michigan and you basically have mine as well...

I root for UM over tOSU every year and no way I root for Bama to win ever... Tenn. is kind of in the same boat so you can add them...

LOL...I just don't think "Roc-Nation" screams professionalism. And what experience does Jay-Z have in sports management?

He doesn't need any. He can hire someone with experience to do that part of it. You sign with Jay-Z because of the rest of the marketing package he offers

Hova also has more money than a lot of other agents combined.

I think that in a few years, some of these guys are gonna be running back to the old guard of sport management. Roc-Nation isn't hiring the best in the business to do the actual management because all of those guys have their own firm. His "marketing package" is unproven and has no experience behind it. With all of the parody of sports agents, people forget that they are real professionals with massive connections/skills.

We can say that these kids are impressed with the business side of RocNation, but lets be real... what really get them is the chance to be associated with Jay-Z.

I agree to a certain extent but a lot of the guys flocking towards Jay-Z are established stars who don't really need an agent to get the big money deal for them. Kevin Durant could represent himself and and get a deal worth over $100 million. We will see, obviously, but I think there are very good reasons for an athlete to go with Jay-Z.

And what isn't proven about Jay-Z and his ability to market? Everything he touches turns to gold. More importantly, his network is nearly infinite. Nobody is turning down a meeting with Jay-Z and Beyonce haha
