Didn't he rank SCum #6?

I hope they win at least 8 games so Kiffin keeps his job. I just don't see it, though.

Depends entirely on Pendergast and the new defense/Max Wittek. He will apparently play a 5-2 (basically 3-4 with two rush OLB sticking their hand on the ground most of the time)... and it seems like they probably have the horses to do it if they stay healthy. But the secondary is a huge concern. McQuay/Cravens might need to start as freshman. Does a 5-2 really work against PAC-12 teams that spread the field and air it out? Will probably be effective against Stanford at least.

They've got more than enough talent on O if the OL stays healthy/doesn't suck. Compare to ND... better WRs, better (as proven right now) RB, equivocal TEs, likely worse OL... QB is just a huge question mark. Wittek sucked last year, but it was his first action. If they get good QB play AND the defense shapes up it's hard to imagine them not winning at least 9 games (they do play a 13 game schedule). No Oregon on the schedule, only 3 teams of true quality (Stanford, Notre Dame, UCLA), and then normal PAC12 riff raff where they probably drop a game somewhere. At worst, that is 4 losses and 9 wins.

#6 though? Yeah, that seems high. Somewhere in the 10-20 range I'd totally buy though.

So many quietly solid teams they assume they'll roll. Gonna say if someone in AZ or UT catches them, they'll drop 5, especially if its in the first half of the schedule...

as Lax pointed out....their D looks good mainly the d line...it will easily be a top 10 dline in nation...that's what made us...it will for them be like our D last year...they got athletes...most likely cody kessler has been doing the best and looks to be the starter this year...he has play makers at the wr position and lee can take a game over...they could be good w/ decent qb play...top 6 NO WAY...10-12 is where i would rate them

USC at 6 is asinine.

On another note, after reading his breakdown of our schedule, it is amazing how top heavy our schedule is this year.

They've got new coaches this year, new QB (for the most part), an O-Line that isn't very deep. Otherwise they've got a lot of talent still despite previous sanctions and such. I just don't see them as top 10 material, let alone top 25 after a 7-6 run last year. I think they'll play tough in South Bend though, they'll be up for that game. It'll be chippy and they'll pull out the stops.

I am not saying that their D-line won't be good, because it will be, but I don't know about top 10. Teams ran all over them last year.

Teams will be able to double Marquis Lee. I know he is the best WR in football, but outside of him, all they have is Agholor, who should be good, but not great. There other 3 WRs I think have a combined 1 catch.

Lane is good for at least three losses himself. And that defense.... oh... that defense. Got more open space in it than a USC coed.

I think USC will go 9-4 or 10-3. I just don't see how he can rate them as #6 in the country based off of last year.

And Steele rated Oregon at 5 and Texas a 4. He seems to love to overrate teams based on their past recruiting rankings. Just because USC and Texas have more skill than their opponents on paper doesn't mean they're going to go undefeated (he did this with ND in the past too).

For his to-be-released top 3, he is still missing Bama, OSU, and I am assuming Fla State. He loves to overrate FSU also based on their "skill." I believe he had them #1 or #2 sometime in the last two years.

Either way, according to Steele, we play 6 of the top 27 teams in the country:

#27 ASU
#24 Michigan
#23 Mich State
#19 Oklahoma
#11 Stanford
#6 USC

I have to say regardless of talent and if they can get guys to step in they have to lose at least 3 games but i would bet on more due to Kiffin most likely getting out coached. Its not an easy game for us since rivalry games are never easy but idt they are anywhere near a top 10 team this year...especially with Kiffin.

Can I assume that your implication includes the empty space between her ears as well as the "wide open" space between her _ _ _ _?

Ill be more surprised if they lose 5 plus games again... But six is really high for ANY team with that kind of depth...

BGI's Lou Somogyi just published an article on Steele's individual ratings for 2013 Irish players:

One of the more popular preseason college football publications — Phil Steele’s 2013 College Football Preview — hit the newsstands this weekend. Although Steele too had to go to print prior to the announcement of Golson and had Notre Dame ranked 10th, here were his individual ratings among those draft-eligible in 2014 (sophomore cornerback KeiVarae Russell could not be included because he is only a sophomore).

Everett Golson — 38th among 60 quarterbacks. Senior Tommy Rees, who will replace Golson, was not listed.

George Atkinson III — 18th among 60 running backs. He is Notre Dame’s top returning back with 388 career yards rushing and seven touchdowns.

DaVaris Daniels & TJ Jones — Among 60 receivers, Daniels ranks 54th while Jones made the cut at 60. The senior Jones has 111 career receptions and 10 scores compared to the junior Daniels’ 31, with zero TDs.

Troy Niklas & Ben Koyack — The junior classmates are not separated by much, with starter Niklas (five catches, 75 yards, one TD) ranked the No. 15 tight end and Koyack (three catches, 39 yards) No. 20. Forty tight ends were listed.

Zack Martin & Christian Lombard — Among 60 offensive tackles, Martin ranked 7th entering his fifth season, while senior Lombard, a first-time starter last season, is 30th.

Chris Watt — Overshadowed by Martin on the left side, fellow fifth-year senior Watt still was deemed the No. 14 guard nationally among the 60 ranked.

Louis Nix III & Stephon Tuitt — This is the main reason why Notre Dame is still believed to be a potential top-10 team. Among 60 defensive tackles, Nix was ranked No. 1. Among 60 defensive ends, Tuitt was rated No. 2. Both were named to Steele’s first-team All-America unit.

Prince Shembo & Danny Spond — Among 60 outside linebackers, the senior tandem featured Shembo at No. 16 and Spond No. 48.

Dan Fox — The fifth-year senior made it to No. 48 among 60 linebackers, while classmate Carlo Calabrese, whose 146 career tackles are the most among returning members of the Irish defense, did not make the cut.

Bennett Jackson — After his first season as a starter in 2012, the senior was rated 12th among 60 cornerbacks.

Kyle Brindza — Only 20 kickers were mentioned, and the junior Brindza, who made a school record 23 field goals last season, was at No. 16.

In addition to returning quarterbacks in 2013, three other positions at Notre Dame did not receive mention: center, safety — despite a strong performance by Matthias Farley last season — and punter.

That's a lot of film to watch. I wouldn't put too much into those rankings, but it's cool to see where our guys landed. IMO, if golson was back, he's much higher/better than 38th.

I could see them losing to Arizona again, although they play them in the Coliseum this time.

I can safely state, than as one IE poster that doesn't know shiit about such things, I have a problem with the rating of eight of the first nine teams.

Bama obviously belongs there until someone knocks them off, but other than Geo's head coach, they look pretty tough and I don't see how you can say USC is going to be better than ND and Stanford. I also thing Oregon is a stretch, but I could be wrong about that. I think they are out of the top ten.
What is this with OSU? The only way you can rate them highly is because of their insanely weak schedule. They have to play a conference championship game, and if there is a team that could suffer from having no depth at offensive line, that's them. Nothing I have heard from the Mewhort camp tells me otherwise. He is it folks!

I don't understand the Buckeye love myself. They lost most of their defense from last year. They do play a weak schedule and the fact that the B1G is not strong overall so maybe that is what is driving the ranking. Beat Michigan and then an average Nebraska team probably and they could go undefeated again.

That IS why Urban went to OSU to begin with... win two games a year and have a chance at the title. I can only hope they make it and play my Tide. LMAO
