Pete Sampson and TJ34 confirmed a rumor on Irish Illustrated that Notre Dame and Texas are close to agreeing on a ten year deal. Sampson expects it to he announced in the coming weeks or months with him and TJ agreeing that final sign offs from Texas are all that's left. TJ said it "effectively replaces Michigan, and could be a deal that would get redone in future years depending on how things go quite a bit down the CFB road, obviously. It's a deal both sides want very much. Could see something along the lines of 4 games each home and home, with a couple as "Shamrock Series" equivalents in pro stadiums such as Jerry World (Dallas) and Soldier Field. Something like that TBD."

I'm pumped for this, TJs scenario should be great for Notre Dame Football.

I would love it, love it, love it if this takes over the Thanksgiving slot they used to play with A&M.

Thatd be a good series i think. I hate Texas (although not near as much as scUM or USC) mostly due to a bunch of people i knew jumped on their Vince Young bandwagon. Couldnt imagine the massive crowds that would be drawn to us playing them in the cowboys stadium because of the big fanbases. It could also be good in recruiting Texas as well

Get in Florida through the ACC, our rivals SC and Standford in Cali, now get in Texas with this, genius.

Sounds awesome. At the same time, I really worry about our SOS being ridiculous if USC gets back to being USC and Stanford stays up. USC, Stanford, Texas, some combo of 2x FSU/Virginia Tech/Louisville/Clemson... pretty action packed season.

THIS... I want to be very clear, this problem would be the same for ANY program, not just ND...

Who in their right mind thinks a program can compete at a top level year in year out playing an average... AVERAGE... year in year out schedule of:

MSU
Purdue
USC
Stanford
FSU
Miami
Texas
North Carolina
Va Tech
Wake Forest
(two games to be decided, which history tells me won't be cupcakes either)

no other school does that and Notre dame shouldn't either... just nuts... drop MSU and Purdue, replace them with cup cakes and i'll feel better about deals with major historical powers.

Now I'm not against playing Texas... but do it with a managable schedule... I am becoming concerned ND isn't going to lighten the schedule, they are going to heighten it... that's just flat crazy to me.

Well dropping Michigan for Texas already makes our schedule easier.

I think we'll probably see one of the other Big 10 teams on our schedule have their series ended.

Basically, we're talking about intentionally scheduling:
-One of the top 3 teams from the ACC every year.
-The (should be) #1/#2 Big 12 team every year.
-Two of the (should be) top 3 PAC12 teams every year.

That's four games against opponents in the top 3 of their league... every single season. Potentially more depending on ACC quirks and MSU and things like that.

That's crazy. Crazy awesome or crazy awful remains to be seen.

Epic. I have so many buddies that went to Texas, can't wait for some great reunions on 6th Street and for them to finally visit ND's campus.

Oh, and this deal is a no-brainer as someone already said. Inroads into fertile recruiting territory and adds another blueblood to the schedule.

I share the same concerns with Lax at the moment, however.

Totally agree. Talk about some Texas pregaming. Love it. Austin is a fun town to say the least.

IMO it would be do-able if they didn't also play ONLY other BCS programs in between,... replace MSU and Purdue with programs that dream of going to the Belk Bowl and you have a much more manageable schedule that would still remain among the better schedules in the country...

NO, NO, NO!

The only non-sellout at ND Stadium was a game against Air Force that was moved from mid-season to Thanksgiving Day to accommodate TV. The students go home for the holiday weekend.

Playing Texas instead of Michigan does make sense from a recruiting perspective.

Correct we are not going to play florida state, miami, virginia tech, clemson, and louisville all in the same year.

Who said we were playing all 5?

In his first post Lax noted "some combo of 2x" and in the later post he noted "One of the top 3 teams in the ACC every year".

We've debated this before, but as things stand now, Purdue is the perfect opponent-- an in-state historic rival from a major conference that's consistently below average. If Hazell really turns things around, we might have to reconsider, but going forward we need to fight to keep them on our early-season schedule.

I generally agree with you and Lax, though. We need a more Temple, Rice, etc. on our schedule and less MSU.

If the selection committee does its job, the incentive to schedule one's way to postseason should decrease considerably.

You mean the two of us???... actually I think we've agree on Purdue in the past... and I don't disagree with you now... I still think it'd be nice to make some room for non BCs teams and the only place I see is MSU and Purdue.

Playing Texas instead of Michigan does make sense from a recruiting perspective.

Playing IN Texas makes sense for recruiting.

That can be accomplished by playing any of the dozen Div 1a teams in TX or playing a Shamrock Game against an out of state opponent that also wants to recruit in TX.

An ND UTX matchup annually is NOT championship scheduling for either of them while the SEC fat cats feast on the likes of South Carolina STATE.

Really hope the Notre Dame vs Tennessee rumor is validated soon as well.

I think the important part is scheduling them early on in the season. It hard to be a championship level football program when you look at the schedule and think "ill be happy if we are 2-2" 2010 leaps to mind.
