I think the important part is scheduling them early on in the season. It hard to be a championship level football program when you look at the schedule and think "ill be happy if we are 2-2" 2010 leaps to mind.

That's exactly right...

In fact, I'd like to see if anyone could come up with the schedule of a National Champion from 1990 on that is on par with what ND plays on a yearly basis right now or on par with what we can expect our boys to play... I think Florida may have done it one year (exceeding it actually), but it's very rare.

ugh.

Could you imagine something along the lines of....?

Navy
Va Tech
MSU
Purdue
Virginia
Tennessee
USC
Clemson
Texas
Wake
UNC
Stanford

The 85 Bears think they could manage it.

Looks like a nightmare. Selfishly I just want to watch them play in person. Schedules like that have a plus side as well. That kind of schedule and nationwide setting, will attract the best players from all over the country. Florida State- Florida, Texas- Texas, Stanford & USC- Cali, and the Carolina's are producing a **** ton of talent right now. ND has always recruited well coast to coast, this would only help.

College football is so volatile that there's no point worrying about the strength of a schedule that's 2-3 years away

I'll buy that scheduling Texas is a big gain from a recruiting perspective.

But as a fan, no way I would've wished dropping a rivalry game with Michigan and replacing it with Texas. I can only hope that it can develop into a rivalry game in time, but for now call me skeptical.

Michigan isn't a rival. Michigan is the enemy. There is a difference. In college football, to a large degree you are the company you keep. I'd much rather be in the company of Texas.

If the selection committee does its job, the incentive to schedule one's way to postseason should decrease considerably.

This. After this season, we are targeting top 4 by season's end. One loss, and in some years two losses, isn't going to crush National Championship aspirations. ND will be applauded for their tough scheduling and in most years would likely be the first two-loss team to get into the 'final four'.

College football is so volatile that there's no point worrying about the strength of a schedule that's 2-3 years away

And this. I love what Jack has done to the schedule. Now all he needs to do is lock BK up for the next decade.

I agree. Just bringing out some positives if our schedule ends up that way. Going into last year our schedule looked daunting and we had a decent year.... just saying.

I don't think Texas is head and shoulders above Oklahoma.

Yes Tennessee is off to a hot start recruiting but lets face facts, not a good team right now. I'd say Miami and Tennessee are comparable.

Team to team this is true... but with nothing on the schedule but Navy and BCS conference teams you can pretty much take it to the bank the schedule will always be a challenge.

Right here, if we can lock Coach Kelly in then none of this should make a huge difference, and Texas has been a little down as of lately anyways. If we lose Coach Kelly for whatever reason these type of seasons are going to be very rough trying to break in new coaching staff compared to scheduling some easier teams

I know this isn't really the place for this because it's already common knowledge that we're taking a break from Michigan, but am I really the only one who wants Michigan on our schedule? I agree that we've obviously struggled against them recently, but Michigan was always my favorite game of the year because I hate Michigan so much. Oh well..

I'm in this camp, I hate losing the Michigan game. I know some of you, for some reason, don't like the Michigan game, but it was my favorite game of the season.

I'll find a new favorite game. I love this addition. Does this start in 2014 then?

And I hope Swarbrick is getting some good cashola for his work. One of the conferences will try to scoop him for Conference Commissioner.

I'm kind of sad to see the Michigan series going away, love when we beat the Wolverines. I like Texas, but not as much as the Irish. That said, this is a favorite .gif from ShaggyBevo and wouldn't mind if we swapped places with OU here:

In all seriousness it would be an awesome series and would produce some great games.

CU didn't lose. They WON at Mizzou 33-31.

Trailing 27-31 CU got a 1st and goal on a pass inside the 5 with about 30 seconds left. They spiked the ball on 1st down to stop the clock. On 2nd Bienemy was stopped short of the goal line. CU called time out. After the T.O. Bienemy again hit the line and again was stopped short of a score. On the next down, 4th, CU spiked the ball to stop the clock.

That should have been loss of possession but after the first Bienemy run, 2nd down, the downs keeper neglected to advance the downs marker to 3rd down. Unfortunately nobody noticed at the time.

On the next play, the last play in regulation, actually 5th down, CU ran a QB keeper and was downed at the goaline. It was ruled a TD. The media at this point advised the officials of the mismarked down but the referee ruled the game over.

The next day photos showed the CU was downed short of the goal line. After being downed he extended his arms and the ball over the goal line. The Big 8 suspended the officiating crew but ruled they couldn't overturn the miscalls. End result CU WON.

I think that is what phork meant when he said they "lost."

Hmmm. Not thrilled about this but I understand it could definitely help recruiting. Texas is not going to struggle forever. Sooner or later they'll be back near the top of college football. Hope we aren't killing ourselves with these schedules.

I think phork remembered the game which is why he said "5 down luck"

Big fan of this. Recruiting and television wise, we are set up in the top three markets for CFB for at least 10 years. This is a total win regardless of how good Texas is. I have a feeling the ACC will acquiesce to our "scheduling" needs if necessary. I could easily see one or two (at most) top ACC teams and three bottom tier each year.

I am in the camp of this being a really good thing. We need to develop a good pipeline into TX for recruiting purposes and this will be one of the premiere games in the country every year.

Now, announce the BK extension and let's all be happy!
