Looking ahead, how do we go about identifying families like the Vanderdoeses and Anzalones before we get burned like this again?

Drive them through the neighborhood around South Bend airport at night. And leave them.

It's a sleazy move, too. EV's continuing refusal to substantiate his alleged "extenuating circumstances" here pretty much confirms it's nothing but a change of heart. So he signed a contract, and has resolved to screw ND by almost immediately backing out of it instead of playing his Freshman year in SB and then transferring.

And his family has the gall to release a public statement to the effect of, "Yes, I'm breaking a legally binding agreement that ND relied upon to its detriment, but I trust ND will do the right thing (wink! wink!) and let me get away with this douche baggery scott free."

Get bent.

Looking ahead, how do we go about identifying families like the Vanderdoeses and Anzalones before we get burned like this again?

Or he doesn't feel like making a family issue or medical problem public. Lots of ways to look at it. He didn't do anything of the like to ND to think they'll do the right thing... he thanked them for their understanding/help. If it plays out as Davidson said, then clearly ND ceded some ground and showed a willingness to work with them.

As for the idiotic suing comment-- for what? The LOI says you must play for the team or serve the penalty. He's serving the penalty.

We wont be able to identify them but we can detour this crap by making an example of the Vanderdoes family and not let them out of the LOI!

What Davidson is saying is he won't be serving the penalty. He is saying that to keep Eddie from USC that we'll be releasing him when we can confirm he'll be enrolled at UCLA.

If somebody gets some info on why USC has anything to do with this I'd love to know. Unless they played harball and used USC as a bargaining chip, which would then lower my opinion of them even more.

Let him go to USC and when he is ready to play, he can meet up with all of the hogs we've been picking up on the line in 2013 and 2014! Bring it!

But Davidson is getting that from the family. So the question remains whether

a) ND has TOLD Vanderdoes that it will release him from his LOI once he enrolls at UCLA (I doubt it, and hope we don't do that), or

b) the Vanderdoeses are simply trying to pressure ND into releasing Eddie by releasing this statement about how gracious ND has been, hoping that, now that the Vanderdoeses have publicly stated that they expect Eddie to be released, ND will do so in fear that if it doesn't, it will look d!ckish and as if it is going back on its agreement with the family.

If there was anything even approaching a valid justification for EV staying close to home, this would have been handled quickly and quietly. There's not.

Vanderdoes not formally released from letter of intent, but family hopes that happens soon.Source says ND fearful he would sign with USC
— Joe Davidson (@SacBee_JoeD) June 4, 2013

I'd bet Joe's "source" here is Eddie Vanderdoes, Jr., and this is just the Vanderdoes camp making one last play to get ND to release EVIII from his NLOI. "If you don't, Eddie might be a Trojan next year!" Davidson was the official mouth piece for the Armsteads, and he's doing the same thing for the Vanderdoeses. He's a hack; don't take anything he says at face value.

This is exactly what I'd tell the Vanderdoeses also. Go ahead enroll at UCLA and then we'll release you. Then he enrolls and ND doesn't release him, and he gets to learn what not standing by your word really means.

Nothing d!ckish about making him honor his LOI. We could p!ss off one family in this case, or the entire CFB world. Looks like we chose the latter.

EDIT: Hasn't been confirmed we let him out.

The only way to even try to avoid the emotionally-labile family problem would be if each lead recruiter was "Dr. Phil" or a psychic. But we can bet that there will be some staff discussion about more time with whole families in their recruiting strategy.

I'll bet "war-room" discussions wrap up pretty quickly on athletics and go straight to not only RKG but also RKF.

Once again, this is no person's [on ND's staff] fault. We are asking too much to insist that these coaches can have crystal vision on family complexities and emotions. The argument "well why doesn't program X have all these problems then?" doesn't wash either. We don't follow those schools. They probably have plenty. But mainly, we're almost the only elite echelon program which is forced to recruit almost everybody far away from "home".

If we were talking about signing programmers for a computer business, we could safely recruit countrywide. 18 year old overgrown children for four years away from home--- not the same.

........ waiting for the Kelly haters to leave all this at his doorstep.... again.

If we release him from the LOI, I will be pissed. Make him sit a year.

What's this thing I read about his sister and a Volleyball schollie?

As whiskey touched on, if the ev camp is mentioning SC, call them out in it, I'd let him go to sc, if only that didn't establish the idea we let 5* recruits go to our biggest rival, let him go play the 3 YEARS he has in sc with the way that program is trending, that promises a yearly reminder of south bend. I'm down for that.

But anyway... Can we schedule ucla now...

Better yet, go to USC and enjoy losing to us the three years you be eligible to play. No way they are worth a sh!t while Lane is there and it will take at least two years to clean up that mess once he is gone.

Saying ND is "scared" of anything invalidates whatever source brought it to that leach "reporter"

What's this thing I read about his sister and a Volleyball schollie?

USC, UCLA and other schools recruiting EV offered his high school freshman little sister a volleyball scholarship. Totally unethical. ND was one of the few who didn't.

Perhaps that's part of the issue here. The Vanderdoes family eventually wants them both at the same school. UCLA might have said Baylee's offer was contingent on Eddie, etc. That would fall within the realm of "family issues", but wouldn't come close to justifying Eddie breaking his NLOI; thus, no explanation from the family.

Probably securing a scholarship for his little sister to UCLA.

This is why you should never freak out and post immediately after news breaks until you hear more of the story.

Good for ND. This is exactly how it should have played out. He sits (congrats on training so hard and getting your body into such incredible shape!) and loses a year of eligibility.

Ugggghhh, this one hurt at first but now it's a big I-don't-give-a-****-good-riddance thing. Recent history says he would have transferred anyways.

Hey EV, I'm glad that 7 hr drive is just a stone's throw away from your family (you know, far closer than say, Cal or San Jose St., right???).

What's this based on? We still don't know why Vanderdoes changed his mind, do we? I mean for all we know there could be a legitimate reason he wants to be closer to home. Or did I miss it?

Not that I don't think you are probably be right. If the rumors of an "academic misunderstanding" are true, then the staff likely bears responsibility for that. Just wondering if you know something I don't or if you are just angry.

I was referring specifically to ND letting Vanderdoes out of the LOI. I was relying on Vanderdoes's statement for my information, and it looks like I might be wrong. So I will qualify and say if ND released him it will be the first time I've been disappointed with the staff. I blame the staff 0% for Vanderdoes's choice to defect. They got the kid to sign. They can only do so much and can't stop kids from flaking.

Agree with LA, but let's stop shitting on the 6 hour thing. There's a sizable difference between that and S Bend. Not like the NCAA told Carlisle he had to go to Purdue when they granted the waiver.

The kid didn't want to come here. He's following the rules. Let it go. Kiel, Lynch and Prestwood all had drama and are all gone. Him coming to ND probably wouldn't have helped things.
