Right. Smith had a great college career but that was, what, almost 10 years ago? Recruits today don't remember that. I think most recruits would have thought of Alex Smith as a big bust before his hot start in 2012 and wouldn't have been impressed by the name-drop.
I get your point, ant80 -- #1 overall draft pick means he did pretty much as well as he could have done in college -- but I still think his lack of success in the NFL (until recently) would have made him a name Urbie would have avoided.
To illustrate -- and this analogy may not work depending on your political persuasion -- to me it would be like trying to convince somebody to run for Governor of Texas because G.W. Bush and Rick Perry used it as a stepping stone to the presidential race ... not untrue, but when you think of those guys now you think of them as a historically bad president and a guy who was laughed out of the presidential race. I mean, in 2008 Republican strategists kept Bush as far away from the candidates running for office as they could. I think similar logic would apply.
