moved up to #21 in both polls, not bad considering they lost a game by 16 last week.

It just dawned on me how different the Big East will be next year, assuming the Catholic schools stay:

#21 Notre Dame (19-5)
#12 Louisville (19-5)

Cincinnati (18-6)
Connecticut (16-6)
#15 Georgetown (17-4)
#18Marquette (17-5)
St. John's (15-9)
Villanova (15-9)
Seton Hall (13-11)
Providence (12-11)
DePaul (10-13)

South Florida (10-13)
#22 Memphis (20-3)
UCF (17-6)
SMU (13-12)
Houston (14-8)

Temple (16-7)

And if the Catholics leave, Notre Dame will essentially be playing in the C-USA next season. Am I crazy to think that this will be Brey's best shot at a Big East Championship? haha

If the C7 bolts before next year (highly unlikely), I would think that ND would follow suit and beg the ACC to let us in early.

Pretty sure it was released last week sometime that Notre Dame will be playing in the Big East next year. Its getting late to be able to make that kind of change.

Yeah it became a problem due to scheduling. Maybe we can win the Big East in our final year? That would be nice!

In the article I read I believe it stated that this was in part due to the belief that the Catholic 7 would be there next year and that if they bolted that ND would reevaluate their position.

yeah that could be it. Brey kind of mentioned it out of the blue in his presser. I still think something would have to happen relatively soon if they are going to move to the ACC for 2013-14 play.

The Catholic 7 have three stumbling blocks. 1) They want to keep the Big East name, 2) need to form a commissioner, bylaws, etc, 3) they need more then seven schools.

If they can get Xavier and Butler, they'll have a conference. Think about all of the small Catholic schools that could be one conference:

#11 Butler (nonCatholic)
#15 Georgetown
#18 Marquette
St. John's
Villanova
Providence
Seton Hall
DePaul
Xavier
Creighton

Then there is always Dayton, La Salle, St. Bonaventure, St. Louis, Saint Joseph's, Duquesne, or even Fordham (psuedo-Catholic) and VCU.

It'll be interesting to see what happens.

VCU isn't Catholic. As a St Bonaventure alum, I just don't want the A-10 to be ripped the shreds because of this. Sadly, that's probably what will happen.

By the "or even" I meant the nonCatholic schools. I don't think any Catholics even live in Virginia haha

Just to be a smarta$$. There is at least one Catholic family in Virginia. Mike Rhoades, assistant basketball coach at VCU, and his family are Catholic. He is from my home area, a town over, and his mother and my grandmother are friends. Great guy with an amazing work ethic.

How many games do you guys think we need to win from here on out to make the tournament? By my estimation, I think we probably need at least 4 Ws to lock it down.

I can agree with four. One has to favor the Irish against DePaul, Providence, Cincinnati, and St. John's. If they can win those and steal one of the rest it should be a top 25 ranking and a 5-6 seed.

I think we're past the point of "are we going to make the tournament" and to the point of "how high of a seed can we get?" I mean, we're ranked 21st in the nation and Joe Lunardi has us as a six seed currently.

To put it another way, we have 19 wins. South Florida made the tourney last year with 20 wins. So, I guess one more win? But I'm assuming we'll win much more than that and be worried about seeding, not whether we make the tourney, come march.

Questions about depth seem to have been answered, and we've got a good PG and one of the best big men in the game. If we can get a five seed or better, I don't see why this isn't our year to make the sweet 16.

2 more regular season wins plus a BE tournament win

OR

3 regular season wins

should do it.

Any combination of 4 wins is an absolute lock

I really don't think so at all. Let's say that we lose to St. John's and Cincinnati in addition to dropping Louisville, Marquette, and Pitt (all three better teams than us and road games where we will be underdogs). That would give us 10 losses with a low SOS and poor RPI. Then if we lost in the first round of the Big East tournament we'd be sitting there with 11 losses and squarely on the bubble if not directly on the outside looking in.

I'll chalk up wins against Depaul and Providence... because honestly, we shouldn't lose those games. I think we need to win at least one of the last 5 to get into the tournament and possibly 2 of the last 5 to be a lock in the 6-10 seed range. By no stretch of the imagination do I think we're already solidly locked in to a tournament spot regardless of outcomes over the last 7 games. There's still work to do.

I think that is about right, but they will be a prime upset pick in round one.

Yeah, that's pretty much my take. I think 3 more wins would get us in... 4 would lock it down.

Yeah but they never even showed up for that FSU game. Worst performance I have seen. That was a great team we had that year

What's even worse is that if we beat FSU we probably would have made the final four and probably the championship game. Purdue (the 3 seed) had lost already and VCU beat Kansas (the 1). Butler came out of the other region.

We would have really struggled with VCU's superior athleticism, and playing style. But, agree it would have been our "easiest" path ever to a Final Four berth.
