"They started out as just friends," Brian Te'o said. "Every once in a while, she would travel to Hawaii, and that happened to be the time Manti was home, so he would meet with her there. But within the last year, they became a couple.

Well, this is certainly one of the whackiest joy-killers I've had. But it is not the first time that I've been involved with mind-boggling claims. My retirement hobby involves investigations of claims that people make of having "unusual" [anomalous] experiences. I believe that there may be a few germane parallels.

1). In any set of claims it's important to clarify exactly what the claims are, separate them, and label who's making them. At the moment, we have one lengthy article full of claims. Some seem to be made by Manti; some directly involve his family [actual physical visits in Hawaii], some involve other parties. WHO exactly claims what?

2). Things being claimed then need reference to the claimants' credibility. Things merely in an article are not "primary witness" claims, they are the typings of a secondary person. Independent credibility checks on each claimant need to be made by someone other than a writer. We assume that Manti is credible in what he says, but exactly WHAT does HE claim? We assume that the Te'o family is credible in what THEY say, but what exactly DO they say? We assume nothing good about the credibility of a hoaxer until it's vetted.

3). Investigations of anomalous phenomena claims often ride not upon the primary witnesses to the phenomena but upon "secondary/supporting" witnesses. In this case the critical secondary witnesses are Manti's parents. What did they actually see? The girl allegedly came to Hawaii.

4). Characteristics of the primary witness often surprise the investigator in ways never thought of. Sometimes the naivete of the claimant beggars the imagination no matter how "adult" that person may seem. I ran into a banker who could be convinced of the wildest things on little evidence; he was still a little kid about everything except his profession.

Bottomline for me is that I would never begin making firm hypotheses or even strong statements until after the claims were made clear and the primary actors were all "re-investigated" and the story pieced together. AND, I see nothing negative towards the larger ND administration or extended family in this. Who wouldn't believe Manti Te'o without prying into his personal life?

What troubles me is that in order for this to be a hoax, without Manti's involvement, it has to encompass multiple outsiders playing multiple roles, all with evil intent.

If we ever get to the truth of the matter, there is no doubt it will be disturbing.

Everybody is over-reating to this. Let the truth come out. He met the fake Lennay on seperate occasions, thought she was Lennay, but wasn't, then continued the relationship via internet outlets. The only question I have is, did they ever talk on the phone?

I don't care how this ends; I will always appreciate Manti for what he's done at ND.

That's just what Ohio State fans say about people like Pryor or Clarett.

If Te'o was in on this, he goes from Notre Dame Man to Notre Dame Embarrassment and a genuine POS.

However, following Occam's Razor....it's probably more likely that a true mensch was the victim of an incorrigible hoax.

I don't necessarily disagree. He HAD to know. Regardless, he greatly exaggerated their relationship. So much stuff he said about their relationship was a LIE.

It's the fact that aunt80 thinks that the Te'o family used this fictional death to gain votes for awards.

That's horsesh!t to me.

That depends. If ND knew on the 26th of Dec, they didn't think it was a good idea for the school to mention that it wouldn't be a good idea for the team to bring it up during the NC game?

As an outsider looking in, it seems like it was a planned publicity stunt by the Te'o family to get more votes for the postseason awards.

Well, as an insider looking out, it seems your opinion is ridiculous.

Jesus Christ.

No matter what, it doesn't end good. Just another excuse to bring up the other 2 issues that I refuse to utter.

This sucks.

I really think the Twitter account tweeting him 30 mins ago just proves that Manti was duped by some sick sick people. If it is reported unbiased ND and Manti will get no flack for this but we all know that won't happen

I can't wrap my mind around this...ant80...my bad for snapping at your comment...just think it was reckless to say that on the board at this time...anyways, if this is in fact a Te'o made conspiracy, lock him in for Troll of the Decade

Where is the evidence he ever met a "Lennay"... Manti said he did but only after the whole death thing.

Can you imagine playing your a$$ off like he did inspired by the death of a fictitious girlfriend? And the violation he must feel? Timing the death of the fictitious girlfriend with that of his grandmother? That is some cruel sick stuff. There is no way Manti would distract attention from his Grandmother's passing this way. He is just naive. A small town boy who thinks he is worldly b/c he is a big-time baller but at heart he is still just a naive island boy.

3 games into the season? Get a life. He had no ****ing clue that he would even be invited to all the ceremonies.

I call BS.

That doesn't make sense because the fake Lennay would have to match the pictures of that girl's Instagram (who wasn't involved).

Troubling, indeed. For Te'o to be blameless here, this had to have been an epic troll job; spanning years, and involving multiple parties, for no apparent gain to the conspirators. Why would they keep it up so long? What did they hope to gain from it?

Typical trolls get bored of such shenanigans in short order and move on. Still lots of questions that need answering.

According to Te'o, multiple times daily prior to her "death".

Apparently that account was just recently created. So it's probably an unrelated 3rd party trying to troll Te'o since this story broke; not the original conspirators.

I'm trying hard to remember when but I remember a reporter asking him about her and he said that they spent time in Hawaii over the summer. I could be wrong. I'll retract my "definitely remember" statement

Trust me on this. The various media entities will be scrolling through all of their archives and you will see more past interviews of Manti (dealing with this issue) than you can stand.

Yep. Was Brian misinformed? It's troubling.

Manti's statement posted yet?

"This is incredibly embarrassing to talk about, but over an extended period of time, I developed an emotional relationship with a woman I met online. We maintained what I thought to be an authentic relationship by communicating frequently online and on the phone, and I grew to care deeply about her. "To realize that I was the victim of what was apparently someone's sick joke and constant lies was, and is, painful and humiliating. "It further pains me that the grief I felt and the sympathies expressed to me at the time of my grandmother's death in September were in any way deepened by what I believed to be another significant loss in my life. "I am enormously grateful for the support of my family, friends and Notre Dame fans throughout this year. To think that I shared with them my happiness about my relationship and details that I thought to be true about her just makes me sick. I hope that people can understand how trying and confusing this whole experience has been. "In retrospect, I obviously should have been much more cautious. If anything good comes of this, I hope it is that others will be far more guarded when they engage with people online than I was. "Fortunately, I have many wonderful things in my life, and I'm looking forward to putting this painful experience behind me as I focus on preparing for the NFL Draft."

There will be paper trail of phone records that can be researched approx. three years.

This single thread is going to be up for major IE awards in 2013. Trolls, conspiracy theories, over-reacting, etc.

Feel bad for Manti....

1. Has zero to do with nd! If urban 's wife got cought cheating would Ohio st be in deep trouble?

2. Probably an innocent religious man that got duped by some sickos

3. Social media is the worst thing that has ever happened to real life.

4. Team knew on 12/26 and without a doubt is a major reason our d got ran over. The leader was probably in ruins.

5. Kelly may have really considered NFL to be able to approach football in a 100% business mode.

I guess we will see. But hopefully Manti if innocent recovers and plays well in the NFL.
