Since Auburn did in 2010 what Notre Dame did this year but they won the game that mattered the most and thus have a trophy to show for their season but are now a sub .500 program but would have traded the next few years of 10-2 teams for a national championship at the cost of going back to being irrelevant? I definitely would as all I care about is seeing Notre Dame win a national championship b/c I didn't follow it in 1988 and if Notre Dame had won on Monday I really won't complain to much if the team went 0-12 next season. Right now Auburn is bad but do you really think their fans are fretting very much since they all saw them hoist?

There was a question on ESPN if rather be Virginia Tech (and win 10+ games every year before this year but never the big one) or Auburn (and win a national title then fall off the map). I answered Virginia Tech.

I want a national title badly. I'll take being in the mix every single year and never wining though over falling off the map and going 3-9 again. BTW I think the ND will get the best of both words at some point.

What's the point of going 10-2 or 11-1 every year and not winning the big one? To me it's just a waste of time and no different than finishing 4-8 as the end result is the same. All that matters is how many trophies you win and not how many years you were a contender and thus if Notre Dame is still without a National Championship 10 years from now then the 2012 season means nothing as we will still have no trophy to celebrate!

I take joy in having strong football teams even if they don't win it all. I want the trophy and want it badly. This year was just so much fun compared some of those 6-6 years not to mention that 3-9 seaon. I understand most people have this all or nothing mentality. I don't that is just me. I understand the all or nothing mentality and respect people who think that way. I'm just different I guess.

Why would you want one good year? Consistency, more importantly winning consistently, is much better than being a flash in the pan. Never does a sports program want to have one good year than go back to being mediocre or worse sucking. Being a consistent 10+ victory team puts you in a better position to win the championship. That is what Saban has done at 'Bama, that is what Holtz did, that is what Carroll did at USC (While cheating...) The point is no fan base or athlete wants to wallow in the depths of whatever sport they are in just hoping for that one magical year for the stars to align.

I don't want Notre Dame to be a team like Tulane and suck every year, but "Hey remember that year we went 12-0 that ONE time?" No, that is absurd.

Horrible thread. I personally think you're out of your ****ing mind if you'd rather win ONE Natty and then relive 2007 instead of having years like this one.

Kelly said during the OU presser that he wants to get to where OU is ... consistently playing great football. OU has only won one title, none since 2001, in several attempts. But they are always in contention ... every year you can start the season realistically hoping for a national title. That's when college football is the most fun for fans, and that's where I want this program to be.

At the risk of sounding like ALLGATOR, I'll say that I"m not QUITE AS concerned about winning NCs as about becoming an elite level program that competes for them year in and year out.**

**That's why I follow recruiting ... building quality depth is one of the most important ways you get there.

losing it every year would eventually get rough but its better than becoming the bottom of the barrell. I will admit though I really hope we can win at least a major bowl game sometime here soon. In my life ive only seen us win a major bowl one time (94 cotton bowl) and ive never seen it since Ive really been old enough to really know and understand football other than I hope Notre Dame wins.

Would I trade places with Auburn....um....h*ll no.

To the OP- On the bright side the timing of this thread will probably get it nominated for "Thread of the Year".

Auburn is not a flash in the pan. The reasons they don't have more titles are named Spurrier,Bryant,Stallings,Myer,Saban and Terry Bowden.

If we were Auburn then we would have Gus Malzahn. If we had Gus Malzahn we would score 20 more points a game. If we scored 20 more points a game we wouldn't go 3-9 again. WE NEED GUS MALZAHN.

If we had GUS MALZAHN we might give up 20 more points in a game also. At least 2 more TDs and a FG at minimum for sure.

Michigan went from like 1947 to 1997 without a title. I'd rather have Michigan's success during that time than a team like BYU, which won a title.

Losing sucks. Nobody likes losing. Its painful to go through a 3-9 season, no matter how many national championships you have or recent they've been. I'd take the season we just had over going 3-9.

Auburn is the antithesis of Notre Dame on and off the field.

Your trolling is inept.

No way in hell!. Plus we don't have to be like the other teams mentioned. We're ND and if you don't see that the future is bright with many NCGs possible, well, I don't know what to tell you.

Hmmmmmm, let me think of some one time (recently) title winners:

Georgia Tech
Washington
BYU
Auburn
Colorado

I'll agree with you the second someone has something nice to say about any of these programs that isn't in italics.....

Last I checked, Auburn doesn't do too badly year in and year out, this year aside. I don't see them being down that long either. Considering this is one bad season among a good stretch of seasons, I would take that national championship and then relive one or two bad seasons after. All I get to hear now after a tremendous 12-1 season is how the Irish yet again fail on the big BCS stage. Screw that, I've lived through plenty of mediocre seasons, just give me that title again.

Living in the state and being a fan of Auburn's biggest rival, I can assure you that their fans are extremely upset over the current state of their program. To win a NC and 2 years later not even win one conference game is driving their fan base nuts over why this happened.
