The Atlantic 10 is trying to position itself to absorb the basketball-only Big East schools (maybe not likely but certainly not unfathomable). In that scenario, the A10 would have 21 schools and would have to shed some weight. It would make sense for them to preemptively shed UMass because they would be the only FBS team in the conference and therefore a threat to bolt. In addition, the transition hasn't gone well on the field, nor have they generated any buzz in the market. They are playing more than 2 hours from their campus. It seems weird that they would be ready to pull the plug this early, but making the jump in the first place was hair brained.
