There is no way that Kelly allows himself to have fewer players available than allowed. That story has got to be bullcrap.

Per the SB Tribune this morning it was stated he did not make the trip, but provided not more explanation beyond that.

IrishIllustrated.com - Kelly Q&A: Oct. 28

Q: Was Gunner (Kiel) one of those players that was sick?
BK: No, we just felt like in this situation where we had a number of administrators on the plane, we just didn't we had to look at pairing back our travel squad a little bit. Gunner wasn't going to get on the field. You hate to see the opportunity to miss a game day, but we had to make some tough decisions on leaving some guys home.

Anyone notice any other players missing?

I personally think thats BS. IMO. If this game meant that much they should have have used a commerical flight who cares how much it cost.

Guys.... people get left home on trips like this all the time. All the time. On every team at ND. It's a pretty big deal to make the travel roster when you're a frosh and buried on a depth chart... and typically players who have no chance of playing (for instance, a 4th string QB who the staff wants to redshirt...) are left home.

Reading WAY too much into this... if he wasn't a 5:s: recruit, no one would give 2 sh*ts. This is total commonplace. What other games have we flown to this year? Answer: Ireland, and they brought everyone to that game as a reward. This is the first game where this would have a chance of happening. Sheesh.

Preach. He wasn't going to play so he stayed home. The end.

It's refreshing to see internet battles about who made the travel roster, rather than about an underachieving football team.

On a side note, I think Golson's style is going to bring plenty of opportunities for his back-ups. He is going to get his clock-cleaned from time to time.

I have a quick question...

If the next three games become decided early...does Gunner come in to start to get experience or not and go "redshirt" (which we don't do at ND)?

I know this was discussed before the season when we did not know how Golson would perform, but we have that info now.

You can answer it from your own or BK's perspective because they could be radically different answers.

I had thought that BK planned on playing GK this year, but so many of our games have been close and Golson needed the playing time for his own experience, that those opportunities never came to pass.

Personally I would figure hold him out, but does mop up duty in a real game (against lower competition) do more for him than running practicies against our own stout 1st and 2nd string defenses?

I am not pushing for any quarterback controversies and am not saying hand anything to GK, EG is our starter and should continue to be so). Simply asking a player deveopment question in relation to both our current situation and GK's and EG's career timelines.

I would HIGHLY doubt this. Golson needs the reps and we need to run up some scores for the voters.

ND doesn't redshirt, but for football purposes it's the same. Get 5 years to play 4.

Doubt GK is ready and then if he played he would have then be in the same class as EG. No bueno.

We could have been blown out in games and GK still wouldn't have played.

3 mop up games aren't more valuable then a year spent learning.

Completely right. The only way GK was going to see the field was if there was something disastrous going on like injuries or something.

We are not burning his redshirt for no reason. We have two more experienced QBs in front of him to relieve Golson.

Next year he'll compete for the #2 slot. Maybe he'll challenge Golson for the starter's job. Hopefully he develops and we can have two tremendously talented QBs plus Tommy as a proven player who knows the offense inside and out.

Did Rees promptly throw the autographed football to a Wake fan?
