Their veteran starter Riley Nelson should be back this week. Hill was much better, from what I've read.

Apparently Hill was injured running the clock out in the fourth quarter. Instead of opting for a kneel down, the offensive coordinator went for a QB draw.

BYU has given up 14 sacks this year.

Did Hill start last week? If he is the better of the two and played last week when they only scored 6 points against Utah State then they are pretty bad.

We're going to shut them out.

Some pundits are already predicting that this will be 'Bama v. LSU 2011, Part II. I doubt they'll give our offense that much trouble, but it gives you an idea of how our respective defenses (and offenses, sadly) are currently esteemed.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph. BYU has lost to both half decent teams they have played and Utah State just gave them all they could handle. I would have said Oregon State would blow them out had their starting QB not gone down. We should crush them based on what I have seen.

Did you just watch the Utah State game? Their offense is pretty bad and their place kicker is the worst I have seen in a long time.

Yes, I did. And I stand by the post I made on 9/29 that you replied to on 10/6.

It's academic now as Hill is out for the season due to knee surgery.

ND will face Nelson with his ailing back. BYU may be reduced to just a running game. This could get ugly.

QB Hill Gone For The Season

QB Hill Gone For The Season

So much for the "Trap" Game.

BYU faces Oregon State this Saturday in Provo. BYU has the 38th ranked Rushing Offense and 86th ranked Passing Offense. They're 85th in Sacks Allowed.

Oregon St has the 4th best Rushing Defense, 37th Pass Defense, allowing 23 ppg, while playing an all DIV 1A schedule to date. They're 4-0 having beaten WIS, UCLA, AZ, and WSU. Sagarin has ORST with the 15th toughest schedule to date.

Sagarin's Predictor makes BYU a 6 pt favorite. I think ORSt's Defense and BYU's QB situation make this an Upset Special.

P.S. BYU opened at -6/. It's down to -2.5. ORSt apparently also had QB injuries.

Knee injury shelves BYU quarterback Hill for year - NCAA Football - CBSSports.com News, Scores, Stats, Schedule and BCS Rankings

CBSSports.com wire reports Oct. 8, 2012 9:04 PM ET

Brigham Young freshman quarterback Taysom Hill will have surgery on his left knee and will miss the rest of the season with a lateral collateral injury suffered on his final carry in Friday night's 6-3 win over Utah State.

Coach Bronco Mendenhall announced the injury after practice Monday as the team geared up to play No. 10 Oregon State, which will be without starting QB Sean Mannion because of knee surgery.

BYU senior Riley Nelson said Monday he is ready, pain-free and will start against the Beavers after missing two games with what he called "back fractures.

...

Hill passed for 425 yards this season and rushed for 336, with 8 TDs.

...

Hurst would not go into Nelson's specific injury but said he looked great Monday.

"He's moving around really well and looked as good as he has since the injury occurred," Hurst said.

"I wouldn't let him play unless I felt very comfortable with him playing."

Can the fiery, competitive Nelson withstand the hits if he tucks the ball and runs?

"I hope so. That's generally what he does," Hurst said. "He should be fine."

Nelson entered the season as BYU's starter, and led the Cougars past Washington State and had a big first half against Weber State. But he didn't play the second half against Weber State because of what coaches said were back spasms.

He played but not well in losses to Utah and No. 24 Boise State, and eventually was yanked in the second half against Boise State in favor of Hill.

Nelson has completed 64 of 109 passes for 754 yards, but has as many touchdowns (5) as interceptions. He has rushed for 238 yards and three TDs.

...

"My back feels good, so I'll be able to move freely and there won't be constant pain," Nelson said. "It was at a point where I was feeling it every step, and every throw and every cut and every move. That occupied my mind so much it affected my decision-making and my play and my confidence. That's all gone because I don't feel pain anymore. I'm back to myself."

^^ So both BYU and OSU QBs are out for the year?

NO, BYU's season starter, Riley Nelson, was out for Hawaii and Utah St with "back spasm" also described as a vertebrae problem in a previous article. According to this article Nelson's back is back yet he mentions he "won't be in constant pain" whatever that means.

BYU's QB the past two games was 22 year old freshman Taysom Hill. He's the one that's out for the season for knee surgery. Hill was originally 3rs string behind a James Lark. Lark has played in garbage time this season but he only has 2 carries for 8 yds and has passed 8/12 for85 yds and 1TD mostly against Div 1AA Weber St and against Hawaii.

ORs-QB-Cody Vaz-Probable | ORs-QB-Sean Mannion-OUT

Here's an article from yesterday that says Mannion will require knee surgery

No. 10 Oregon State QB Sean Mannion out with knee injury - The Washington Post

Mannion was averaging 339.5 yards passing a game, second in the Pac-12 and sixth in the nation.

He has thrown for 1,358 yards with seven touchdowns and four interceptions this season. He is sixth on Oregon State’s career list with 4,686 yards.

Vaz, a 6-foot-1, 198-pound junior, played in five games in the 2010 season, completing six of 17 passes for 48 yards. He did not appear in any games last season for the Beavers

No.

BYU lost their freshman QB, which all of us agree having watched him play appears to be the more dynamic athlete...

Their starter is back after an ailing back.

Even more confident about this guy without Hill. Nelson has shown a tendency to go all Denard when he's pressured. And I don't mean taking off for the house.

Sagarin's Predicator Model from last week (new one's not out yet) had BYU a 10 pt dog in South Bend if they had played this week. Considering the results of their game and ours. It should drift further apart.

The only reason I could see to tighten up the spread would be the extent/duration/impact of Golson's blurred vision.

I didn't see the BYU v #10 ORE St game.

BYU's original starter, Nelson returned from his back injury and was 28 for 51 for 305 yds and 3 TDs. He also had 13 carries for 39 yds.

ORE St's Starting QB was out with a season ending injury and his backup, Vaz, had a big day as well, 20-32, 332 yds, 3 TDs.

ORE St had 450 Total YDs against a defense that had held it's last 12 opponents to under 300 yds/game.

They won't be able to move the ball. Even after the offense looked fine last night they still have struggled to score on almost every team they've played this year. Now they are playing the ND defense. Hopefully Te'o takes it easy on his Mormon brothers.
