Fascinating. Thanks for the post. I wonder if part of it is age and surprise. As players get older, more cool-headed and better at executing, it seems unorthodox strategies would be less likely to work. Also as they become more common, people would train to counter them, which could change the odds. Coach needs to work on his math, though.

I think the punting point is valid. If you punt from deep in your end they have a 70% chance to score, whereas if you go for it and don't make it it becomes 90% but your offense is almost immediately back on the field.

He often forbids his players to return punts, reckoning that the odds of a fumble outstrip the incremental yards that can be gained from a return.
