Just watched ND vs. Purdue for the 2nd time (first time sober). After watching that, I feel more confident in our chances this week.

Golson is a stud. He has so much poise for a 2nd start QB. Also, some of the sacks weren't so much of him not getting the ball off, but the Dline penetrating so quickly from missed blocks that the best move he was left with was to tuck is and live to see another down. Golic obviously needs to improve, and I expect him to have a hell of a week of practice knowing his job has to be on the line.

Teams are afraid of GAIII in the return game.

Hercules might be the best blocking TE in the country (I say this with no knowledge of any other great blocking TEs, but he's an absolute monster at blocking).

Our 2ndary is better than I thought. Quite a bit better.

Our Dline gets to the QB on passing downs.

Riddick has been a beast. Runs so hard for his size. Him and Cierre are going to make us hard to stop.

Rees was far from perfect in the final drive. He made two good passes, one to Toma and the one where he threw it up to Goodman. He should have gotten a delay of game on that one play, and IDK why he spiked the ball with 11 seconds to go, rather than run it down to 3/4 to avoid a kick off. But well done by the offense on the final drive. I'm very glad Kelly is sticking with Golson.

Tuitt is going to see a lot of double teams.

This game isn't that close if it's not for that one drive where we missed every tackle, Golson's fumble, and Martin's hands-to-the-face penalty. Very correctable mistakes.

Really solid analysis, add the officials coddling the PU defense, and throwing our offensive play calling at the line off. The time that Kelly stepped on to the field enraged, they took between 10 and 15 seconds away from us.

And after all of this, I think PU will win their division of the Big 10.

This was from a depth chart that Fortuna got a hold of. Also had KLM, Tausch, DD and Eifert on the injured players list.

Brian Hamilton ‏@ChiTribHamilton
At tailback, Theo Riddick as expected listed as #NotreDame starter with George Atkinson III and Cierre Wood separated by an "OR" at No. 2.

Is Eifert out?

You've demonstrated a shocking lack of understanding the last few days.

It would be idiotic to run the hurry-up with this squad. Golson can't handle it and running the hurry up would lead to an exponential increase in mistakes/turnovers on his part. And even if Golson was ready to go, only 1/2 of the receiving corp is.The offense is too complicated and the players are too young to use the hurry up. You'd see Neal, Brown, Niklas, Atkinson and others missing assignments (hello injuries) and running wrong routes (hello turnovers) and standing in wrong formations (hello penalties).

There are two ways to attack a defense effectively. Go with the hurry up with a smaller group of guys and a simpler playbook (e.g. Oklahoma, Oregon, etc), or use a barrage of different personnel packages (e.g. Ohio State, LSU etc). One is not superior to the other, and when you have young players with unbelievable talent and want to use them early and as often as possible, the hurry up is just a stupid way to go about it.

Kelly deserves lauding, not criticizing, for his ability to completely change his philosophies to adapt to his players.

Again, read above.

To the bolded part: this isn't a true spread offense anyway. This is now a "Multiple Offense," with Golson operating in a Look format for much of the Purdue game. I'm not sure of the Look aspect was planned or not, I didn't see it int he beginning.

Here's how it works: ND changes personnel (e.g. takes out Toma and Goodman, and puts in Niklas and Koyack) and immediately lines up in ____ formation. The defense will possibly hurry to substitute guys in to fit that package, or line up as is and make the best of it. Kelly and Martin analyze the defensive formation and quickly call the best play in. It takes about six seconds for that part to happen. It's what you do if your quarterback is young and thus doesn't audible well.

I suspect that if they want to stay with this philosophy, you will see playbook wristbands in the future. They did burn too many timeouts, and at times ran the clock too low. But a lot of that was planned to chew clock.

Again, remember, the ref crew was holding the offense up so the correct defensive package could sub in. Who has heard of such a thing?

we didn't do any that i recall...we ran this for the Navy game, we were in shotgun formation the entire time against PU

Nope, watched it again last night and Golson was under center....not as much as against Navy but they ran some plays from under center for sure.

If Mich St loads the box with 8 I hope GA111 lines in the slot, and gets open with a short pass, and we if they are going to over pursue use it against with a screen to him.

You will probably see a loaded box quite a bit....but State likes to bring the corner and safety blitz as well (well....you will see blitz packages all night I think). Taking off my homer glasses - we have the best pair of cover corners in the country in Dennard and Adams. This allows State to do some unique things on defense and leave those guys 1 on 1 against just about any WR they face. Our linebackers are fast and plug holes quickly.

I'm really psyched to see what this D does against first real test of the season (Boise was a test for sure....but won't be as physical as ND). I know stats are for losers.....but every player on MSU's defense made some type of all conference team last year which is unheard of....all 11 guys. We return 8 off that unit.

here is my 2cents

On offense
I want to see Wood,Theo,Tyler, and GA3 on the field at the same time with Niklas blocking.I want us to take some shots deep to open up the run and the middle for Tyler. Also some screens if MSU is overly aggressive on D.

Defense

Gotta tackle and wrap. I think with our rotation of guys up front we give Bell all he can handle. If we get ahead and force them to pass their qb will be picking mud out of his throat.

Niklas is having trouble blocking at the moment. Doesn't always know his assignment. He will settle in though.

These are the things that excite me about this team. We're beating people with athleticism even we don't know what hell we're doing. Once the players start to "get it" look the **** out.

Haven't beaten a Top 10 team in seven years (Michigan in 2005) and are 0-10 in last 10 road night games against Top 10 teams (last victory was in 1983).

I know this isn't very reliable input, but I think we're due, typically over the past 10 years there's no way we would have beat Purdue last week. We would have found a way to turn the ball over on the last drive, or lose it in OT, that didn't happen for once and I think our team is probably realizing that things may actually fall in favor to us this year.

On a separate note, Bell is definitely going to be a burden for us on defense, though watching the Boise state game, I wasn't entirely in awe when watching MSU's offense. Now I know that was the first game of the season, but they played an overrated Boise State team, who had a completely new defensive line, who did fairly well against MSU's oline and the running game if you take in the fact that this was their first time playing as a dline unit. I was extremely optimistic with the Purdue game and it turned out to be a lot closer then I thought, but I'm going to stay optimistic again with MSU, because I feel they still being a good team, the game will come down to the trenches, and even though our oline struggled last week, I think we will see a large improvement in their coverage. Kelly said in the post game press conference that they were going into that game blind, their defensive coordinator from Purdue had been coaching in Canada, and they had zero film to prepare with. With us playing MSU every year and having two solid games of film, I see us having a much better advantage in this one. I mean I honestly think defensivly, we are much better this year than last year (even with our secondary being a little shakey) and we handled business with them. Now I know we play away and MSU is always tough, but I think with our added weapon of Golson, it's going to be very difficult for MSU to stop us defensivly. Tommy they could sit back and wait for the pass, after Golson's step and juke move that he put on the outside LB and CB blitz, where we shook both of them and took off the other way, that adds another dimension that MSU's defense will not be ready for, nor have they faced anyone with the arm and legs like Golson this year.

And am I the only one who thought Golson had a hell of a day last week against Purdue. With all the pressure and the praise for the Purdue CB's, he didn't throw one interception, he threw the ball twice as much as he did the week before, he ran the bell well (Minus the good play of their cb pulling the fumble out). I think he deserved a helmet sticker from Lou last week but he didn't. He has improved drastically from week one to week two. I mean the first couple drives of the game all we did was throw the ball and complete passes. Week 3 were going to be much more prepared offensively, and defensively I think we have a better showing than we did against Purdue.

Prediction
ND- 28 *(With us missing a fg attempt that could make it 31)

That right there is a bold statement. Johnny Adams is a possible 1st rounder. I believe both him and Lewis are on the Thorpe watch list, but I don't know who Dennard is. Def a talented secondary you guys have, but I'm not so sure about tops in the nation. B1G? Yeah maybe. Fwiw Purdue's Ricardo Allen is also on the watch list.

What I think will be key is the play of your OLBs matching up with Eifert and our slot men.

Finally, that's a pretty awesome stat. Some of those guys were honorable mention (which is still badass), but let's not forget that those 8 returners are the same guys that Two-Minute Tommy and Co. hung 24 on last year. I think it's going to be a low scoring affair, first team to 21 this year wins it.

The more I think about this game, it might be the biggest of Kelly's career so far. 3-0 start on the line, which hasn't been done since 2002, a top 10 victory away at night, I believe a win here could spark us to a top 12 ranking.

USC was way bigger. This is probably second, maybe third after 2011 Stanford.

BK - QB and o-line, especially center Cave need to improve their communication

BK - Purdue's final touchdown was against a scheme that wasn't executed very well - but it's not going to change - it needs to get better

HC Brian Kelly on Le'Veon Bell : "The challenge is that he plays, he plays every down and he keeps coming after you."

BK -- there will be crowd noise pumped into practice this week
