The Yankees have parted ways with manager Joe Girardi, whose contract expired following the 2017 season. Both the team and Girardi confirmed the news Thursday.

“With a heavy heart, I come to you because the Yankees have decided not to bring me back.”—statement from Joe Girardi #Yankees
9:46 AM - Oct 26, 2017

"I want to thank Joe for his 10 years of hard work and service to this organization," said general manager Brian Cashman in a statement. "Everything this organization does is done with careful and thorough consideration, and we've decided to pursue alternatives for the managerial position."
"As Hal Steinbrenner and I mentioned to Joe directly this week, he has been a tremendous Yankee on the field and away from it, as a player, coach and manager. He has a tireless work ethic, and put his heart into every game he managed over the last decade. He should take great pride in our accomplishments during his tenure, and I wish Joe and his family nothing but success and happiness in the future."
There have been rumors circulating for weeks that Girardi was feeling burnt out, and was ready to step away from baseball -- at least temporarily -- to spend more time with his family. His statement seems to indicate it was the team's decision to move on, however. Not his.

Girardi, 53, just completed his tenth season as Yankees manager. The team went 910-710 (.562) under his watch and never finished a season with fewer than 84 wins despite having some lean rosters from 2013-16. Girardi led the Yankees to the 2009 World Series championship as well as three AL East titles.
The Yankees are skewing young now and there's been some speculation Girardi didn't mesh well with the team's young players. His relationship with catcher Gary Sanchez in particular seemed to be rocky. Girardi notably called Sanchez out for his trouble with blocking of pitches this past season, and also didn't listen to him when he said to challenge Lonnie Chisenhall's hit-by-pitch in ALDS Game 2.
It's hard to believe, but over the last 22 seasons, the Yankees have only had two managers: Joe Torre and Joe Girardi. Cashman is said to prefer hiring people he has a preexisting relationship with, which figures to shape the team's managerial search.
The Yankees join the Phillies and Nationals as teams with managerial openings. The Red Sox (Alex Cora) and Mets (Mickey Callaway) both hired new managers recently.

Tanaka could have tested the free agent waters this offseason but will instead stay in New York
Mike Axisa Nov 3, 2017

The Yankees now know they'll build their 2018 rotation around Tanaka, Luis Severino, Sonny Gray, and Jordan Montgomery. CC Sabathia is a free agent and the expectation is the Yankees will look to bring him back on a short-term deal. They are trying to get under the $197 million luxury tax threshold, so spending big on a free agent like Yu Darvish or Jake Arrieta is unlikely.

2. Otani does come to MLB, and ends up with ...
... the Yankees. They have as much international bonus money to offer as any team, and they can woo Shohei Otani to New York with their great young core and farm system. "We just went to Game 7 of the ALCS and have a rookie right fielder who hit 52 homers, a 24-year-old catcher who hit 33 homers despite missing a month, a 23-year-old righty who will get Cy Young votes, and MLB.com's No. 1 prospect," seems like a pretty good sales pitch, no? At 23, Otani fits right into the club's youth movement.
So far the Otani situation is playing out like the Yu Darvish and Masahiro Tanaka situations. Otani might not come over. Otani wants to come over. A disagreement between MLB and NPB put his move in jeopardy. It plays out the same way every time. There are weeks and weeks of rumors explaining why the player will or will not come over, everyone freaks out, and then eventually everyone comes to their senses and the player comes over. The same will happen with Otani. Eventually he'll be made available to MLB teams, and when it happens, the Yankees will put on the full court press and land him.

...

He received all 30 first place votes to beat out second place finisher Andrew Benintendi of the Red Sox, and third place finisher Trey Mancini of the Orioles.

...
By the FanGraphs version of WAR, Judge was the best player in baseball in 2017. That includes rookies and veterans, position players and pitchers. He led the AL in runs (128), homers (52), and walks (127), batted third in the All-Star Game, and won the Home Run Derby. Judge was the clear favorite for AL Rookie of the Year and is also a finalist for the AL MVP award.

Judge is the first Yankee to win Rookie of the Year since Derek Jeter in 1996, and the ninth Yankee to win the award overall. He joins Jeter, Dave Righetti (1981), Thurman Munson (1970), Stan Bahnsen (1968), Tom Tresh (1962), Tony Kubek (1957), Bob Grim (1954), and Gil McDougald (1951). Only the Dodgers have had more Rookie of the Year winners in history than the Yankees.

The Yankees will next speak to a pair of former Yankees
R.J. Anderson 9 hours ago

The New York Yankees have paused their ongoing manager search until after the general manager meetings conclude on Thursday.

Once the process resumes, Brian Cashman will be talking to a couple of former Yankees about the job: ESPN announcer Aaron Boone and San Francisco Giants bench coach Hensley Meulens, per Joel Sherman of the New York Post:
Aaron Boone and Hensley Meulens will be in the next wave of candidates interviewed to succeed Joe Girardi as Yankees manager, The Post has learned.

Boone has never coached or managed before but did spend the 2003 season with the Yankees as a player. Nonetheless, the Yankees are supposedly "intrigued" by the potential that his charisma -- the same that helped him land a broadcasting career -- can transcend his inexperience. Of course, Boone comes from a baseball family: His grandfather Ray, father Bob, and brother Bret each played in the majors.

Meulens, on the other hand, played for the Yankees from 1989-1993 had spent the last several seasons as the Giants hitting coach before being moved to the bench coach role this winter. He has managerial experience stemming from winter ball and the World Baseball Classic, and has a preexisting relationship with Didi Gregorius, per Sherman.

The Yankees were reportedly denied permission in their quest to interview Athletics manager Bob Melvin. Meanwhile, former Detroit Tigers skipper Brad Ausmus also won't be interviewing for the gig, desiring instead to take a year off:
Jon Heyman ✔@JonHeyman
Yanks reached out to Brad Ausmus, but it seems they got the same answer as the mets. He'd like to take a year off from managing.

The Yankees have also reportedly interviewed their own bench coach, Rob Thomson, and Eric Wedge, who has managed both the Cleveland Indians and Seattle Mariners. It's unclear how many more individuals the Yankees intend to talk to before making a decision.

Hal Steinbrenner apparently had his heart set on finding a new manager no matter what
by Mike Axisa Nov 16, 2017

Three weeks ago, the Yankees somewhat surprisingly parted ways with longtime manager Joe Girardi. The Yankees were a surprise success story in 2017, going from being considered a fringe contender before the season to winning 91 games and getting to within one game of the World Series. And yet, Girardi was let go.

Last week general manager Brian Cashman said the Yankees moved on from Girardi due to concerns about his communication skills and his ability to connect with players. The Yankees have a young roster, so communication is important. These kids are just learning the ropes and the team wants to make sure they're in good hands going forward.

At the owners' meetings on Wednesday, Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner took it one step further, and said he would've made the change at manager even if the Yankees won the World Series. Here is what Steinbrenner told reporters, including ESPN's Jerry Crasnick:
"As I told Cash, I wasn't following his recommendation: I agreed with it. He and I have had these discussions for a considerable length of time, over and over again. This isn't something we just decided we wanted to sit down and do at the end of the season. We've had a lot of discussions through the years.''

In the aftermath of Girardi's firing, Cashman cited Girardi's "communication and connectivity'' issues with players as the main reasons for the change. Steinbrenner indicated that the issues were of sufficient concern that the Yankees might have switched managers even if Girardi had led the team to a World Series victory.
"I'm sure there would have been more pressure,'' Steinbrenner said. "It would have been maybe a more difficult decision to make. But I would have made it because I felt like that was best for the organization moving forward.''

Firing a manager after winning the World Series sure would've been unprecedented. Well, technically Girardi wasn't fired. His contract expired after the season and the Yankees chose not to bring him back. It's essentially the same thing though. The Yankees determined Girardi was not the right man for the job and are making a change.
Three postseason managers were let go this year: Girardi, former Red Sox manager John Farrell, and former Nationals manager Dusty Baker. It's the first time ever three postseason managers were let go in one season. Similar to Steinbrenner and Girardi, .
It seems these days clubs are not letting on-field performance dictate their managerial decisions, which is smart, I think. The best manager for the team in 2017 is not necessarily the best manager for the team in 2018 and beyond. That's the decision the Yankees (and Red Sox and Nationals) came to this year.

Yankees PR Dept.

@YankeesPR
The @Yankees have acquired minor league RHP Michael King and 2017-18 international signing bonus pool money from Miami in exchange for INF Garrett Cooper and LHP Caleb Smith.
6:00 PM - Nov 20, 2017

The Yankees get King, a former 12th-round pick who managed a 3.14 ERA and 5.05 strikeout-to-walk ratio last season in Class A. The real draw could be the international bonus money, however, since it should aid the Yankees in their pursuit of Shohei Ohtani:
✔Joel Sherman
@Joelsherman1
#Yankees got $250,000 in international $ from #Marlins. That gives them $3.5M now to spend this offseason. Only the #Rangers $3.535M have more. #Ohtani

https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/...y-for-spring-training-after-shoulder-surgery/

OF Aaron Judge underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder yesterday. The procedure involved a loose-body removal and cartilage clean-up, and was performed by Dr. Neil ElAttrache in Los Angeles at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic.
The anticipated recovery time will be completed in advance of the start of spring training.

Judge dealt with shoulder issues this past season, but he downplayed the significance in his public comments. In light of this news, it seems likely he was hurting more than he let one.

https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/...-beltran-to-their-managerial-candidates-list/

Multiple reports Tuesday morning indicated that Beltran will interview for the still-vacant Yankees' managerial opening. It will be his first coaching or managerial interview of any kind.

Beltran will be the sixth person to interview for the Yankees' managerial opening, joining Yankees bench coach Rob Thomson, former Indians and Mariners manager Eric Wedge, Giants bench coach Hensley Meulens, Dodgers third base coach Chris Woodward and ESPN analyst Aaron Boone.

Before spring training in 2016 Carlos Beltran asked for one of the young players to be moved into his corner of the clubhouse so that he could help mentor him, talk to him during all the downtime about anything that came up. The player was Aaron Judge.

... and he's bilingual.

"Aaron Bleepin' Boone it is."

"Aaron Bleepin' Boone it is."

Aaron Boone will be next manager of Yankees - NY Daily News

Aaron Boone will be next manager of Yankees
BY
BILL MADDEN
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
Updated: Friday, December 1, 2017, 10:57 PM

The Yankees have chosen Boone to replace Joe Girardi as manager, the News has learned and was the first to report on Friday night.

Boone, 44, who catapulted the Bombers to the World Series in 2003 with his iconic walk-off homer in Game 7 of the ALCS against the Red Sox, is said to have been the most polished candidate of the group.

Brian Cashman had been intrigued by Boone, who was serving as a baseball television analyst at ESPN. He has no previous managerial or coaching experience, but clearly impressed team brass during his interview.

Cashman recommended Boone to Hal Steinbrenner, picking him from a pool of six candidates that included Carlos Beltran, Hensley Meulens, Rob Thomson, Chris Woodward and Eric Wedge -- all of whom interviewed for the job.

On Friday, after Cashman said he was finished interviewing candidates and was ready to make a recommendation to ownership, the News reported that it would come down to Boone and Meulens.

Beltran and Thomson were both informed that they were not getting the job. Thomson will join the Phillies as bench coach under Gabe Kapler. Meulens, recently promoted to Giants bench coach from hitting coach, will stay in San Francisco, where it's believed he's being groomed as Bruce Bochy's success once the three-time World Series winning skipper decides to call it quits. Meulens was intriguing because of his Yankee ties and ability to speak five languages.

The selection of Boone ends a search process that took more than a month to complete. It included a large list of candidates, which was ultimately pared down to six who sat in front of team executives Cashman, Jean Afterman, Tim Naehring, Mike Fishman and Dan Giese at Yankee Stadium.

The Bombers were interested in Raul Ibanez, but he preferred to stay in the Dodgers' front office and be with his family. The Yankees also reached out to the A's about manager Bob Melvin, but their inquiry was rebuffed.

Girardi was ousted despite leading the Bombers to within one win of a berth in the World Series last season. He went 910-710 in 10 seasons, guiding the team to six playoff appearances and the 2009 championship.

Cashman wanted a replacement that was a strong communicator who could be open-minded to new ideas -- including analytics and performance science. He knew he wouldn't be able to find someone who checks all the boxes, but Boone is an engaging personality with a high baseball IQ who has embraced analytics.

Still, it is a gamble for Cashman and Co. as Boone has never taken on this type of endeavor before. Granted, during his teleconference with reporters following his interview, he said, “I would say in a way I've been preparing for this job for the last 44 years.”

Boone comes from a baseball family. His father, Bob, was an MLB catcher and manager. His older brother, Bret, was an All-Star second baseman. And his grandfather Ray Boone was an two-time all-star in the 50s.

When reached by the Daily News about whether or not he would be working alongside his younger brother, Bret Boone left the door open. “We’ll have to see,” wrote Bret in a text.

Aaron Boone played 12 seasons in the majors. His career highlight, of course, came after he was traded to the Yankees in 2003: his homer off Tim Wakefield in the 11th inning of Game 7 at Yankee Stadium that gave the Bombers the 2003 AL pennant and extended "Curse of the Bambino." The blast led to Boone being called Aaron ‘F---ing’ Boone up in New England.

But Boone’s career low light came just a few months later in January of 2004 when he suffered he tore ligaments in his knee playing a pickup basketball game in the offseason. The hoop game was a violation of his contact and led to his release paving the way for the shocking trade that brought Alex Rodriguez to the Bronx to play third base.

The Bombers did appreciate that Boone was so honest and forthcoming about the injury. It must've stuck, because nearly 14 years later, he's their skipper now.

And the pressure is going to be high, replacing someone like Girardi and inheriting a win-now roster full of young stars like Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez and Luis Severino.

There is also the possibility the Yankees add 23-year-old, two-way star Shohei Otani, considered the "Babe Ruth of Japan" to that mix as well.

Next up for Boone will be finalizing his contract and finishing off his coaching staff, which will include pitching coach Larry Rothschild. Wedge, perhaps, could be a possibility as bench coach given his previous managerial experience. Boone played for Wedge in Cleveland in 2005-06.

Aaron Boone has succeeded in the Big Apple on the field. Now, he'll try to do so from the dugout.

I am not sure if this is gonna work out for the yanks.

The club lead by Miller Huggins, Joe McCarthy, Casey Stengel, and Billy Martin now needs a youth whisperer to succeed?

Well, this is the generation of participation trophies.

Doubt it, Marlins literally have zero leverage the longer this takes. They need to get rid of him don’t really have a choice

They gave up very little from the sounds of it.

Hard to believe no other team brought more than that to the table.

As a Sox fan, all I can hope for is injuries. Nothing serious, just lame $$$ injuries.
