No. The marlins had pretty much zero leverage in dealing him.

I don't believe that at all. The other packages being reported from the West Coast were better. Anyone who's anyone can see that.

Jeter put this thing together for the Yankees.

Stanton would not accept a trade to the Giants or Cards...hence the leverage.

Marlins could have dragged this out for months. The leverage was at a low but could have been changed. Trade Ozuna + Ziegler/Chen (Most of payroll that’s not Stanton). Would have left the team at payroll Jeter desired plus a team equivalent to the Cincinnati Reds (Votto with no help). Stanton would have changed his I’m only going to LA or NY tune at that point. Jeter LET Stanton go for nothing because it was the Yankees. No other way around it. Point of leverage could have easily shifted as time went on. Jeter let it happen the way it did.

The response from the rest of the league will be fascinating. Red Sox have to be feeling an itch now.

Conspiracy theories will follow Jeter trading his best player to his old team right after taking over, but it’s not that complicated. This is just an owner completely in over his head getting worked by someone far savvier.

They gave up very little from the sounds of it.

Hard to believe no other team brought more than that to the table.

Little insider love from Jeter?

Takes the Yankees out of the Harper pool.

As a Sox fan, all I can hope for is injuries. Nothing serious, just lame $$$ injuries.

I won’t be surprised to see the Red Sox sign JD and a right handed pitcher. With that said the bad blood between the front office and price they might have to off load him to free up the money. Because a lefty rotation against the righty bats against the yanks is bad medicine.

They've had feelers out on quite a few "power" bats this off-season.

Abreau seems to be staying with the White Sox because the asking price was too steep.

I'd like to see Martinez and maybe a heavily discounted Joey Bats added to the lineup. They need some pop in the line-up.

I was glad the Sox weren't a realistic option for Stanton. I was petrified of that contract and his injuries. I didn't think the Yankees were a real option either and would've preferred him getting buried in San Fran.

The Sox rotation needs some freshening up. Not sure what the plan is with Price but hopefully they figure something out.

Should be a fun season atop the AL East.

With the caveat that there are still more than two months to go before spring training, here's a look at what the Yankees' lineup could look like come Opening Day:

CF Brett Gardner
LF Aaron Judge
RF Giancarlo Stanton
C Gary Sanchez
1B Greg Bird
SS Didi Gregorius
DH Aaron Hicks
3B Chase Headley
2B Ronald Torreyes (or someone else)

Notably absent: Jacoby Ellsbury. Ellsbury was relegated to fourth outfielder's duty behind Gardner, Hicks, and Judge in the postseason and the expectation was those three would remain the starters in 2018. Now with Stanton in the mix, the Yankees have five outfielders for three outfield spots plus the DH spot.

The Yankees still have room for a good-sized signing even after Saturday's trade with Miami
Mike Axisa Dec 10, 2017

The Yankees have made it clear they intend to get under the $197 million luxury tax threshold in 2018, which will reset their tax rate -- the club is currently taxed at the maximum 50 percent -- and save them millions. They've paid luxury tax every year since the system was put in place in 2002. That's a lot of wasted money.

Acquiring the largest contract in the sport -- Stanton is three years into his record 13-year, $325 million contract -- doesn't seem to jibe with the plan to get under the luxury tax, but given the team's payroll situation, the Yankees can not only afford Stanton, but they still have room for another signing or two.

...

The Yankees could fill one or two of those three remaining roster spots with more pre-arbitration players to save money. Domingo German or Ben Heller could grab a bullpen spot. Tyler Austin or Tyler Wade (or both) could grab roster spots, especially with Wade likely to get a chance to compete with Torreyes for the second base job in the wake of the Castro trade.

...
Putting aside $10 million for midseason additions (call ups) still gives the Yankees about $10 million in spending money this winter, which is a pretty nice chunk of change. Of course, they're also looking to unload some of their veterans, so they might be able free up even more spending money.

...

Given his massive contract, it's easy to think the Stanton trade blows up the Yankees' chances of getting under the luxury tax threshold in 2018. That is not the case. The structure of Stanton's contract along with the subtraction of Castro and the club's current contact commitments give the Yankees about $10 million to spend this winter, and it could be even more if they move Ellsbury (or Headley), or decide they can put aside less than $10 million for midseason addition, or the arbitration-eligible players cost less than expected. That $10 million or so in spending money means it is very likely the Yankees are not done this winter.

Yankees' Giancarlo Stanton: Officially dealt to Yankees
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire
The Yankees officially announced Monday that they acquired Stanton and cash from the Marlins in exchange for Starlin Castro, Jorge Guzman and Jose Devers.

As expected, Stanton approved the move to New York and the deal was made official Monday morning. The 2017 NL MVP, who hit .281/.376/.631 with 59 homers and 132 RBI in 159 games last season, will join an already potent lineup that led the majors in homers and was second in runs scored and RBI last year.

I like Torreyes as a utility guy, but I'll be extremely disappointed if he's the starting 2nd baseman next season. Torres or bust for me.

Source: Yankees have RHP Michael Fullmer of the Tigers as a potential trade target. Fullmer still has five years of club control; would bring back nice haul for Detroit. @BNightengale first to mention Yankees/Fullmer connection.

Most recent news I found on Fullmer was a December 12th Rotowire report.

Tigers' Michael Fulmer: Picks up throwing program
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire
Fulmer (elbow) started a throwing program Tuesday, Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Fulmer underwent ulnar transposition surgery back in September, a procedure that usually carries a 3-to-4 month recovery timeline. He appears to be right on schedule, and barring any setbacks, the right-hander should be fully healthy heading into spring training. Despite dealing with elbow issues, he still posted a respectable 3.83 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 114:40 K:BB across 25 starts (164.2 innings).

Plenty of other teams are involved, of course
Mike Axisa 12/14

Chicago is currently in a deep rebuild -- remember they traded away Chris Sale, their franchise pitcher, last offseason as part of this rebuild -- and on the surface, pursuing Machado doesn't make sense given his impending free agency.

...

Of course, the possibility of the White Sox acquiring Machado then flipping him to another team for prospects is quite interesting, especially if that other team is the Yankees, who added Giancarlo Stanton to their lineup recently. They have plenty of prospects to trade -- in this scenario the ChiSox would rate the prospects they receive from New York as better than the prospects they trade to the O's -- and an opening at third base after trading Chase Headley. It's a natural fit.

Per Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, the Yankees have agreed to a one-year deal worth $10 million with free-agent starter CC Sabathia.

...

Sabathia, 37, should complete a Yankees rotation set to also feature Sonny Gray, Luis Severino, and Masahiro Tanaka. It's unlikely that Sabathia's presence will deter the Yankees from continuing their pursuit of Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Gerrit Cole.

Right now, the Yankees are poised to open the 2018 season with a rotation of Luis Severino, Masahiro Tanaka, Sonny Gray, CC Sabathia and Jordan Montgomery. That's not exactly a liability when you consider it in tandem with the deep Yankee bullpen and a powerhouse lineup that now includes Giancarlo Stanton. However, general manager Brian Cashman still wants to fortify that rotation, and to that end the Yankees have been linked in trade talks surround Gerrit Cole of the Pirates and Michael Fulmer of the Tigers. Now add another name to that list of potential trade targets ...

Buster Olney
@Buster_ESPN
The Yankees have been digging into background/scouting on Diamondbacks lefty Patrick Corbin, one of the starting pitching options they've considered. He had a strong second half in 2017; eligible for FA after 2018.

4:34 PM - Dec 18, 2017

Patrick Corbin, 28, is coming off a 2017 season in which he pitched to a 4.03 ERA/119 ERA+ and 2.92 K/BB ratio in 189 2/3 innings. For his career, he owns an ERA+ of 104 across parts of five big-league seasons. Corbin is third-year arbitration-eligible for the upcoming season and eligible for free agency next winter. Last season, the left-hander made $3.95 million, so he's in for a hefty raise over that figure.

Corbin likely fits with the Yankees' larger luxury tax aims, and he also has a record of mid-rotation upside. As for the Diamondbacks, they'll looking to shed a bit of payroll while still being positioned as contenders in 2018. Presumably, they would want some a controllable piece or two in return, and the Yankees have plenty of that to offer.

Sources: The New York Yankees are working on a deal to acquire starting pitcher Gerrit Cole from the Pittsburgh Pirates. Sides are talking, and while a final package has not come together, there is confidence. "A matter of when rather than if," one source said.
7:53 PM - Dec 21, 2017

Cole, 27, just completed his worst season in the big leagues. He threw 203 innings with a 4.26 ERA (101 ERA+) and 31 home runs allowed. Cole allowed 34 home runs in 579 1/3 innings from 2013-16. Part of that is the purportedly juiced baseball, though moving into hitter-friendly Yankee Stadium would only exacerbate the home-run problem though.

Yankees' Brandon Drury: Will primarily play third base
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire
Drury's main focus will be third base, Brendan Kuty of NJ.com reports.

Drury played almost exclusively as a second baseman in Arizona last year, starting just one game at third, though he's appeared at six different positions in his career and is valued for his flexibility. This news probably means that the Yankees view Gleyber Torres as more big-league ready than Miguel Andujar. Drury will likely enter the season as the Yankees' starting third baseman, and while his playing time may diminish once Andujar is called up, he should still earn a fair amount of starts all around the field.

NY Reportedly Signs 2B Neil Walker

https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/yankees-reportedly-sign-neil-walker-which-impacts-prospects-torres-and-andujar/

The New York Yankees added another piece to an already impressive lineup on Monday, reportedly agreeing to terms with free-agent second baseman Neil Walker:

Jeff Passan 10:24 AM - Mar 12, 2018

Source: Second baseman Neil Walker has agreed to a deal with the New York Yankees. Still pending a physical.

Jon Heyman 10:48 AM - Mar 12, 2018
@JonHeyman
neil walker and yankees are finalizing a deal. will be MLB deal. believed to be about $5M. @JeffPassan 1st

Walker, 32, hit .265/.362/.439 (111 OPS+) last season while splitting time with the New York Mets and Milwaukee Brewers. He's consistently been an above-average hitter, having never posted an OPS+ below 106 over a full season. His defense at the keystone is below-average, yet he's shown a willingness to play elsewhere in the past, and he took reps at both infield corners during his time in Milwaukee.

Walker figures to slot in at second base for the Yankees, with recent acquisition Brandon Drury taking over at third base. That would likely leave top prospects Gleyber Torres and Miguel Andujar in the minors to begin the season, and could put Adam Lind on the bubble for making it onto the 25-man roster.

Walker had been one of the top free agents remaining.

https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/yankees-gm-brian-cashman-continues-to-prove-hes-one-of-the-best-sports-executives/
by R.J. Anderson 3h ago

On Monday, the New York Yankees agreed to terms on a one-year deal worth around $5 million with second baseman Neil Walker. Consistently an above-average hitter, Walker ought to permit the Yankees to play Brandon Drury at third base and store prospects Gleyber Torres and Miguel Andujar in the minors for further seasoning. It's a smart deal the capstone to an offseason that proves Brian Cashman is one of the best general managers in the league.

Cashman has artfully assembled a team that was projected by PECOTA to win 97 games without Walker and has done so while maintaining an elite farm system and payroll flexibility. The Yankees have six prospects ranked in MLB.com's top 100, and they have about $15 million to spare before they hit the collective bargaining tax threshold, suggesting they'll be able to pursue Bryce Harper and/or Manny Machado without worrying about stiff overage penalties next winter. Oh, and the Yankees entered the week with a lower payroll than the likes of the Los Angeles Angels and Seattle Mariners -- that despite having a significantly better, deeper roster.

Yes, Cashman has made some trademark Yankees moves in recent years: stealing Giancarlo Stanton; trading for Sonny Gray; bringing in Masahiro Tanaka and bringing back Aroldis Chapman and CC Sabathia; swallowing Jacoby Ellsbury's contract as he sits on the bench. But, for the most part, this club has been built through smart management and good player development. Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez, Luis Severino, Greg Bird, Brett Gardner, Dellin Betances, and Jordan Montgomery have never suited up for another organization. (David Robertson, Adam Warren, and Tommy Kahnle were originally Yankees, too.) Didi Gregorius and Aaron Hicks have improved their stocks since coming over in non-blockbuster trades, and so has Chad Green -- who, perhaps forgettably, was netted alongside Luis Cessa for Justin Wilson.

As for that farm system, Torres is ranked no. 5 by MLB.com, while Estevan Florial (44), Justus Sheffield (48), Andujar (65), Albert Abreu (74), Chance Adams (75) are also considered top-100 talents. That's a lot of depth that the Yankees can leverage either through trades or promotions, the latter affording them more payroll flexibility to chase the veterans of their dreams. Cashman deserves credit for what he did at the July 2016 deadline, when he turned Chapman and Andrew Miller into Torres, Sheffield, Clint Frazier, and others.

It's easy to point to the Yankees' payroll and say Cashman has an easy job. But he doesn't. He's seldom afforded an off year, and he sharpened his teeth while working for perhaps the most mercurial owner the league has ever seen. Even now, Cashman will face criticism from a fierce media market if these Yankees fail to fulfill their promise. There's also the matter of whether or not Cashman's hiring of Aaron Boone as manager proves to be another masterstroke. Two things are for sure though: 1) Cashman knows how to run a baseball team; and 2) if Boone fails it won't be because Cashman didn't deliver talent.

The Yankees have the chance to win the 2018 World Series. They'll be in the conversation for the championship in 2019, 2020, 2021, and so on, too. It's been too easy to avoiding Cashman his credit throughout his time in charge. But it's time. Cashman is one of the best and has been for a while. Anyone reluctant to concede that isn't going to have a choice for much longer.

That's not all the bad news for the Yankees. CC Sabathia left the game after the fourth inning with a sore right hip and underwent an MRI. Brandon Drury had to exit the game with a migraine and blurred vision. Tyler Wade left with flu-like symptoms, and Gary Sanchez departed with what Aaron Boone says he hopes is just a cramp in his calf (Sanchez caught almost the entire game). Sabathia's seems to be the most concerning injury, but the Yankees will know more on Saturday. Cue tabloid angst ...
