Another close scenario may be:

American boxing hero gets killed (literally) in the ring against unknown Russian amateur moments after James Brown gets the crowd in a tizzy giving his most rousing rendition of "Living in America" ever......

I don't think we care enough about USA basketball for it to be like that. I think Cold War USA hockey against USSR... gold medal game played in America and we get beat 7-1 might be close.

But we weren't supposed to be on their level, which is what makes it tough.

I mean... they legitimately thought they were going to win the world cup. Hadn't lost a competitive home match in years.

So yeah, I don't really think there is a comparable.

The Super Bowl this past year is really the only other comparable event to me. I guess the 2012 NC, too, in recent memory.

Decades.

I really don't think there's an American comparison to what happened. I mean Americans don't care about any sport really the way Brazilians care about soccer.

I think it compares best to if ND played in the national championship against, lets say, Alabama, and were destroyed to the tune of 28-0 at halftime.

Oh wait.

Imagine if that was in Notre Dame stadium though. Dear god we would be jumping for the rafters.

Brazil hasn't lost at home in nearly 40 years, and the officiating will likely be in their favor again, but this game just has "Brazil Exposed!" written all over it.

That's fucking interesting, man. Tell me more.

Though to be fair, "butt-rammed" would have been more accurate than "exposed."

I remember playing FIFA 14 about six months back and getting to the world cup as an International Manager... I'm the US and in the semis and in the other semi Germany beats Brazil something like 5-0... I remember being mad about how unrealistic that was being that the tourney was in Brazil... 'unrealistic ass game, that shit could never happen".

Just once I want to see Scotland get England in a World Cup match and smash them like Germany did today...

The crowd would be playing bagpipes in the second half, throwing haggis at people... 'feck ya, ya feckin english basdurds!!"

Wanna know what would be even better than that? Scotland beating England in the deciding WCQ so England doesn't even make the World Cup.

I would prefer he not play in Italy, idk if it's the stadiums, crowds, style of play or a little of all three but I really dislike watching Serie soccer...

What reminds me most of 2012:

Both teams had problems with their emotions because of their best player. Manti Te'o was discovered as a lier by the team, days before the game. Neymar was out and Brazil broke down.

Brazil is the most traditional team in history of soccer, ND is the most traditional program in history of CFB. Both saw that destroyed for one night.

Neither Germany or Alabama lack for tradition, either. (Just adding to your analogy, not disagreeing.)

To the "American equivalent" discussion we talked about it at dinner last night and came up with something close.

If the Navy winning streak was snapped in Notre Dame stadium by a score of 49-7 instead of a super close game AND Notre dame had been a good team heading into that game that people thought would make a run at a championship that would be pretty comparable.

According to ESPN, here are the "equivalents" in the four major American sports:

Hockey- win by 11 goals
Baseball- win by 18 runs
Football- win by 32 points
Basketball- win by 58 points
