I'm curious about why ND fans have a particular hatred for USC, Michigan and Ohio State. As a Bama fan, we probably hate Auburn because they're our cross-state rival, but even more so because of how whiny their fans are. Not knowing all that much about ND history, I'd like to hear where the hatred (or extreme dislike) for those 3 programs comes from.

Read this link and it'll explain why we loathe meatchicken. Their former coach/AD, Fielding Yost, was a bigot that did everything in his power to black ball ND and thwart it's rise to national prominence solely because he hated Catholics. Bo Schemblecher was the exact same, being a protege of Yost.

I will have zero respect for that butthole institution so long as the definition of a "meatchicken man" includes a relationship with Schemblecher.

I've never felt the same burning hatred for Ohio St. that I do for Michigan and Southern Cal.

Michigan is easy... Rack Em' just linked you a great definition, and it's not unlike the 'cross-state' type of rivalry at all. Perhaps even worse: same proximity and different states!

USC is more nuanced. It goes like this: Fuck. Them.

(I'm really glad you kept the 'Interloper' tag I saddled you with.) ;)

I'm not from the Midwest so I have no issues with Ohio State other than them not being my team so I hate when they're more successful in any way than ND.

USC, to me, is all about the rivalry on the field, the highly rated teams and matchups of years past, and the perpetual recruiting battle we seem to be locked in with them. We play every year, and every other year we play them last so there's always the opportunity for heightened drama and stakes going into that one.

Michigan - I hate everything about them. They've broken our hearts on the field quite a few times, but it goes much deeper for the reasons Rack Em pointed out.

My hypothesis on O$U:

ND has a concentrated fan base in the Midwest, as does O$U. Their fans tend to be super obnoxious and quite prevalent. Therefore there's a lot of "air time" for them so they make their obnoxiousness pervasive.

And, obviously, Urban Meyer is a POS who spurned ND and has no ethical compass whatsoever. He's a disgrace to Lou.

Ugly history there with Michigan.

Ugly history there with Michigan.

But without that ugly history maybe ND merges into the B1G and basically becomes Nothwestern. A small, private school with a stellar academic reputation but very little national attention (and a football team that regularly blows).

Maybe we should thank Yost for being such a huge dick? LOL, no way. Burn in Hell ya asswipe.

I don't think people here hate OSU just for itself or in the same league as UM and USC. I think they hate Urban more , and what sweater vest got away with and how those guys come off looking so tough when much of the rest of the Big 10 is kinda down.

I don't hate USC. I respect them and enjoy playing them. I hate LOSING to USC, however. I hate Ohio State due to their constant arrogance and annual overrated standings, but not necessarily the everything about them. As for Michigan, however...

I hate OSU and their ridiculous fans.. Really it's the fans who drive the OSU hate. They play anywhere from 1-3 challenging conference opponents and have an easy rise to the top, which the fans then start to become unbearable.. I also lived in Ohio during school, so I'm prejudice .. But they are not on the level of UM and USC

Rivalries are complicated and quite interesting sometimes, with a long history of grudges. For Bama & Auburn, the coaches usually get along fine and Bama fans don't care much one way or the other about Auburn as a school. We just detest their fans and look down on them for how insecure and whiny they are. They hate our football success, despise any Bama coach, and complain that our fans are arrogant. We probably do rub their noses in it all just because of how they act.

I find the whole ND thing towards USC, Michigan and OSU very interesting. I was totally unaware of the ND/UM history until today.

Actually, I hate OSU for their fans' irrational hatred of ND. It wasn't enough that they gloat about being good, during the Tressel years; they had to also revel in the misfortune of Notre Dame.

ND-USC is unique because it is THE premier inter-regional rivalry. Most are between teams close in proximity or a shared conference.

1. USC is our main rival, but I don't hate them. To keep it short, since hiring Haden and no more Carroll/Kiffin don't think there is all that much to "hate."

2. Michigan is the scum of the earth. Historically, see above. They're a school that reveres bigots and KKK sympathizers. In the present, they're a truly unique blend of all the worst characteristics of a school. Delusional self-importance despite not winning an outright title in over 50 years and failing to regularly compete in arguably the easiest major conference in football, arrogant alums who think Michigan > Harvard and that they're God's gift to society coupled with an absurdly disgusting and stupid general fan base of Walmart Wolverines who spend their welfare checks on tacky Michigan apparel, and the fact that despite being a good academic institution they funnel all of their football players into a fraudulent and worthless general studies major and even with that still don't graduate players well. Literally take the worst aspects of UNC, University of Chicago, white trash, Penn State, and the Klan... that's Michigan.

3. Everyone has a different reason for disliking Ohio State. Mine is because they're our "rival" for lacrosse dating back to the days of the GWLL. We whip their ass every year but the games are always super chippy and contentious. Most dislike them because their fans are incredibly obnoxious and they have to deal with them on a daily basis.

Ohio $tate isn't really a hatred out of rivalry, but a hatred out of their leadership and their fanbase (and to an extent, some of their players). O$U has possibly the worst fans in college football. They're cocky, ignorant, and at some times hostile. They also have the honor of having 3 very controversial coaches. Woody Hayes wasn't known to playing nice, and tried to start fights constantly with coaches, press and even players (as we probably all know). Tressel, while being successful, achieved a lot of that success through less than honorable means. And then there's Urban...Oh, what to say about this guy? I don't think there's a more underhanded, snake-like coach in the game to this day. People like to give Saban sh*t, but Urban is by far the sleaziest in the business. It pisses me off more so because he was a Holtz disciple (sorry that your protege was such a d*ck Lou). He pretty much has ZERO respect for the school that made him who he is today, and expresses those feelings on a consistent basis. Overall, it's very difficult NOT to hate them. Hell, I can sympathize with scUM fans in that regard. It sucks having to deal with these scumbags year in and year out.

scUM's hatred has pretty much been well documented. Their coaches hated catholics, we hate them. Outside of that though, they at least achieved their success somewhat honorably unlike O$U.

Southern Cal has a similar history to ND. A lot of their hatred lies in their 00's success. Being a ND fan that started watching in 2002, it's just great that I didn't get to experience my first win over SC 8 years later. There's Pete Carroll, but you can't help but feel sorry for SC in that regard. It sucks, because Pete pretty much bolted town as soon as the hammer was about to come down (I know he said him leaving wasn't because of sanctions...Yeah, more bullshit please).

I despise Michigan due to all the aforementioned reasons. As far as USC, I believe hatred or dislike or whatever you want to call it towards SC might be based on where you live. Because I live in SoCal I cannot stand SC. I loathe the fan base. They are arrogant to the point where they
love their reputation for being stuck up. It's quite disgusting. Also the SC fans out here hate ND, so I can't bring myself to respect them.

Besides all the aforementioned info on ND-Michigan, their fans just flat out think their shit doesn't stink. I don't understand it.

I live in NY, mega loathe USC. More so than Michigan. If one game had to remain on our schedule, id pick USC in a heartbeat. I wear my FUSC shirt regularly

That's 80% of it for me.

The other 20%..... Have you seen those assholes?

I HATE SOUTHERN CAL (They'll always be my #1 fuck you.)

Edit: The reason I love ND is exemplified in this thread. Our fandom is a really beautiful mix of irrational love and hatred... mixed with really pragmatic/fact driven love and hatred.

Never hated tOSU until Urban took the job. Never actually really cared either way about them until that point!

Hated the spanking USC gave us during the Caroll years and when Kiffin showed up it just became easy to despise them.

scUM is a different story. Of course history has a lot to do with it so does that pompous asshole on ESPN... I just can't stand him! Their current coach and the fact they don't care about their student athletes also makes them easy to hate.

Though OSU doesn't compare with Mich and USC...I still can't stand them. Urban cheats, the vest was just the same, and their fans are ass-hats (on average).

I hate ohio state more than michigan, or usc.

Living in Columbus, its just absolutely brutal to try to deal with it lol. (Koon you will experience this in 5 weeks from today)

But, I dont hate the school persay- I just hate the fanbase. Getting into the different layers of fanbases with The Turning Point, I have realized every fanbase has complete jackasses and idiots. Then every fanbase has fans with open minds, and then the casual fan who knows the QB but couldnt tell you the starting WRs. There are a couple different levels sprinkled in there.

But ohio st fans take the jackass/idiot to an entirely new level. I can appreciate the loyalty and great gameday experience in Columbus, but if you listen to SportsRadio in Columbus for more than 15mins as a fan of someone other than ohio st...its a miracle. They fired a popular and extremely biased towards osu radio host a few years ago...bc he ripped Jim Tressel on the tattoo/car fiasco and called for a harsher punishment.

All the fans that hated Urban for years, now are in love with him and he runs a tight/clean program and magically all the "bad" in the past were just rumors, or "he'd never do that at ohio st, we dont need cheap tricks"

I can understand the excitement of having Urban as a coach. I mean lets face it. Hes one hell of a coach and manipulator of young men. I dont say manipulator in an completely bad way either. The fact that he had back to back undefeated regular seasons in this day of college football is remarkable. If he was ever the Notre Dame coach, I wont lie and say I wouldnt be excited to have him, but I would feel a sense of disappointment in the University in that they are ok with compromising some core "beliefs" that Notre Dame is known for.

But, it is just hilarious to see the fans, and radio hosts talk Urban up the last 2 years after bashing and ripping him apart for the previous 6 years.

Some know their football, while 90% dont know a lick of it, other than osu is a great program. They dont see Braxton Miller not throwing a football since January bc of surgery as a potential question mark.

"All Miller needs to do is run, and he will take us to another 12-0 mark, and probably win the Heisman".

I talked to a good friend at work, and he was trying to sell me that Buffalo was a great win for them last year bc Mack went in the first round. What?

I actually enjoyed watching Thad Matta coach the Buckeyes in bball, and enjoyed watching Buckeye basketball prior to them becoming a good program again. Now, I cant stand it, and its solely bc of the idiotic fanbase. I mean there were people, and still are people, saying that Aaron Craft will be an NBA All Star and that him not getting drafted will only make him work that much harder.

I dont like usc or mich bc they are ND rivals. I have been to Ann Arbor many times to chill with friends, and that atmosphere is no where close to Osu.
