Notre Dame still hot after Marcus Rios of Cosumnes Oaks, who insists he's 100-percent firm with UCLA;ND also wants Armstead;distance is issue

Irish Illustrated @NDatRivals

Notre Dame worked its way back into the mix with four-star cornerback Marcus Rios, who's committed to UCLA.

But UCLA approved him for spring enrollment on Thursday night, nixing any shot at a late ND visit, according to father Richard Rios.

Sounds like outside of Standifer, that about does it for 2012.

Just for the record, Kiffen did the same thing with Seantrel a few years ago. We all saw how that ended up..

Everyone should keep in mind as well that by not maxing out on our number this year, it helps us tremendously in the '13 cycle, which was going to have extremely limited numbers had we gotten 4 or so more. '13 is still going to be a small class, but we can add a few more next year now instead of reaching this year.

I think that is why BK and co. have passed on so many and are still not backtracking on that - they understand that ND is different in that they are issuing 4-5 pacts with prospects, and in such a competitive atmosphere were ND already has a substantial disadvantage from most schools that it must be extremely definitive and resolute on who they bring in and when.

How many slots our open if we only take Standifer for 5th years?

Standifer will bring the 2012 class up to 19 (counting Badger). The "magic number" is 26. Thus, if Standifer ends up as the last recruit in this class, we can bring back up to 7 seniors.

Would make sense to do that, actually, as it will ensure that the 2013 class isn't dangerously small.

Great points. We must also remember that a top ten class of less than 20 recruits is an unreal accomplishment in today's world of college football recruiting.

I understand what you are saying but then is cost us Ekanem. I think i would much rather have him then Goodman.

But I think what Whiskey was saying is that the choice isn't between Ekanem and Goodman; it's between Ekanem and whatever linebackers are available in the class of 2013. It's not like Ekanem is going to play this year.

All that much better he has a year to get 100% and learn the system and he is pretty talented.

Two things:

1. We would have said the same thing about Jonas Gray at this point last year. I am more than willing to give Goody a chance next year given our youth and inexperience at the position, especially since we could very well be breaking in a new QB. Plus, I truly believe Goody would have been back either way.

2. It didn't cost us Ekanem. The staff cooled on him, most likely because of his injury. Do I wish we could take a chance on him given all the talent he showed pre-injury? Of course. But like I said earlier in the thread, the staff needs to be really careful in how they dole out scholarships if they truly want us to become a top tier program, as we run a much different ship than others. It is so wild to think that ND was scared off by a very tough leg injury, one that is notorious for being difficult to return to top form from? I would love to have Ekanem if the situation were right, but I don't think ND can afford to ever panic in regards to recruiting and mortgage the future to appease the masses who crave a higher recruiting ranking.

I am 100% in favor or quality instead of quantity. No need to grab a guy like Raph Andrades if that means keeping a spot open for someone of better talent in the 2013 class.

I understand the concern with the injury. I still think he will be fine and we missed out on a good football player. This team gains nothing but Goodman being here. He couldn't will a spot last year with Floyd,Riddick,Jones,Toma. With that you have DD that is going to step up in floyds spot.

Goodman has 2 years in the Kelly system, he is big, fast, and smart. IMO i am happy he is coming back and will prove his worth.

With players like Goodman on the field is why we WON'T get back to the top of college football.

Unless DD is truly magical, no one will take our record breaking receivers spot, however, just like in moneyball (sick movie), we need to recreate him. That responsibly has to be picked up by all our receivers, I see goodman getting an alot bigger workload this year and stepping up to the challenge, IMO
