I completely agree with everything you said and that's also why I don't think Butler is the guy. What I'm trying to figure out, and can't get a good read on, is that there seem to be conflicting reports out there about whether he would have to sit a year at a DI school.

Some places are saying he's eligible to transfer without sitting out a year because of USC sanctions.

Some places are saying IF he graduated he can use the graduate exception (but like you said no one knows whether he's graduated).

Some places are saying that he has to move down a level, which implies he hasn't graduated.

Definitely a wait and see type of situation.

The NCAA Sanction Waiver is a one time deal. As a upperclassmen you can tranfer then with no loss of a year. By staying at USC Butler spurned the Sanction Waiver. He doesn't get a second bite at that apple.

IF he graduates he could be eligible for a graduate school transfer but as an ND alumnus would you expect ND to accept the typical USC student athlete into a graduate program? Butler would have to be the execptional USC SA.

IF he didn't graduate I dont' expect ND to accept a senior transfer based on past experience. Again as a recent grad do you see that differently, regardless of what's reported on other boards?

Would that mean one less scholarship for the 2012 class?

No, he wouldn't be a "counter", that's the NCAA word that pertains to the 85/25 man rules, until 2013.

Div 1AA Athlete transfers can't be on athletic scholarship during their transfer year. They have to pay there own way. Student assistance/loans, etc available to all students can be arranged and possibly Pell Grants (I don't know how they are handled with transfers).

BTW, NDinL.A. has opened a new thread for the Possible Transfer. Take further conversation on Butler, Carlisle, OMM or other probable or improbable tranfers over to:

Would be a nice add but again no help for '12.

But he would be eligible to play in 2013 and that's the year we're eyeing as a potential BCS year. I think this would be GREAT for us. I think this qualifies as much more of a "WOW" than Butler.

Rest of the class

Rest of the class

So with Shumate's decision today, that leaves us at 5 spots remaining in this class, correct (assuming Cave, Slaughter, and KLM get 5th years). The transfer of Amir Carlisle, although not a done deal, is generating a TON of smoke and, usually, where there's smoke, there's fire. Let's say Carlisle does come to South Bend, leaving us with 4 remaining spots in this year's class. From what I've read on this and other sites, we seem to have very realistic shots at securing the commitments of the following:

-Yuri Wright - CB - NJ
-Davonte Neal - ATH - AZ
-Joshua Garnett - OL - WA
-Ken Ekanem - OLB - VA
-Devin Fuller - ATH/QB - NJ

We also are at least in the running for these guys, all of whom are among probably the top 10 most sought after recruits in the country:

-Arik Armstead - DL - CA
-Nelson Agholor - WR - FL
-Darius Hamilton - DE - NJ

My question is how do you guys see this class finishing out? What if we can land more than 4 of these guys, does KLM need to go? What if we can get Armstead only if we take his brother Armond as a transfer from USC? Just wondering what you guys think BK and CO. will do in different situations?

Does Goodman not get a 5th year? He is talking like he is.

Going to suck for him then when reality sets in.

And if anything can be taken from tweets (yeah I know) he seems to be mocking everyone working out and wanting to get better.

Kap needs to stay. he was huge for the defense before his injury. I'd love to see Lynch and Tuitt splitting time on the other side for next year with Kap on the other end... Tuitt might even get a few looks inside with Nix.
On another note, today excited the hell out of me. I think we are finally on the way back to prominence. This defense is going to be very scary in the future.

Assuming KLM, Cave, and Slaughter get a 5th year there was six spots. Then Shumate committed and Amir transferred. So I believe it's down to four. I sure hope there is a way to make room for these remaining guys if they choose ND (not all of them obviously...though it would be nice)...

-Armond
-Arik (eventhough all of his friends are at Cal)

-Westerkamp (eventhough we're STILL waiting on his flip)
-Wright (eventhough my gut tells me UM since he pushed his commitment back)
-Neal (eventhough we're up against OSU and Urban)
-Agholor (eventhough I think we're third behind UF and USC)

-Garnett (eventhough Stanford seems to be the leader)
-Fuller (eventhough he has yet to schedule his last OV)
-Ekanem
-Poole (eventhough he still says he's solid with Florida)

-Is there a real shot at Hamilton or this just some pipe dream?

*sorry, I didn't even notice the post above mine that basically says the same thing.

if these were the last four spots, I've have to be wheeled out of work on a stretcher, but I promise I'd give the thumbs up on the way baby :rockwoot:

IF we get the two Armstead's, Westerkamp, and Fuller..... I'm happy.

Then turn all guns on Darby. Have to keep him!

I said it long ago and was killed for it, but still haven't lost the feeling that KLM might not get his 5th year. Not saying I think it is right or that is the way it should go, just saying that I see it happening.

My gut tells me that we have only two 5th year guys, Cave and Slaughter.

Don't tase me, bro...

This is blowing my mind too. There seems to be a high liklihood that ND is able to get more than four of the remaining targets. I have no idea what will happen if they do. Someone made a good point the other day that the staff might pass on KLM since the DL depth now is more than capable and adding Armond (who is better) almost guaruntees Arik will sign. I'm starting to wonder if they'll let go of Slaughter as well. I realize how important he would be to the secondary next year given our lack of experience, but if Nelson or any other highly rated prospects want on board, there isn't much wiggle room besides the 5th year candidates. Unless, of course, these transfer rumors with Lo Wood are true and perhaps the staff knows of a couple other possibilities.

I struggled with Slaughter as well. I feel like they would be able to get by with moving someone into the role of center easier than replacing Slaughter. I feel like Slaughter is the most important of the three. Just my opinion.
