I will bet all my vbucks that Elston is not going to be the D coordinator next year.
Kelly isn't even trying anymore. He clearly doesn't want to be here and the only person who can't see it is Swarbrick.

The only way that Elston rumor could be true is if BK is a lame duck coach next year.
Yeah us internet commenters clearly know more than the man who is around him everyday.
Fleck has said he will not speak to anyone until after the MACCG. Purdue is supposedly ready to offer shortly after the game.
What could possibly be the rationale for that? It would only result in a lost year with no recruiting momentum.
Swarbrick has a perception problem right now. He follows Kelly around like a puppy dog. He entered the SC press conference arm in arm with Kelly, then stood off to the side nodding admiringly throughout. He gives the appearance that they are in this together, which is not comforting to fans.

ahhh the good 'ol days.....

I'm leaning towards this being the case if I had to predict what will happen. BK going into 2017 like Miles was this year for LSU. 2 losses early in the year and he's gone. I don't think "the guy" is out there this year for us, and now Swarbrick/ND can be talking to agents behind the scenes for a while in case next year disappoints.
Not landing Meyer might be the moment we look back on as the 'last chance' for ND football. Should have offered him double what Florida offered, rather than half.
Who is "the guy" next year, though?
The hottest name on the market got his job, and anybody else that is realistic is available right now. Waiting another year and having a lame-duck coach is putting faith in the fact that some un-missable candidate is going to pop up next season... but that would be no different than the landscape we're looking at now, so it would be a giant contradiction to wait and think some new name pops up.
The only exceptions I can think of are Mike MacIntyre taking Colorado to another 10+ win season, or an NFL coach coming available that we currently have no idea about. Otherwise, the next cycle would be the exact same as this one.

Could we say the same by not offering Fleck the job in the future? I know he is not as accomplished but the fire and enthusiasm that he brings is unmatched.
The UCF and USF coaches are both guys to keep an eye on. Wake Forest's head coach as well, heck if Derek Mason takes the next step at Vandy, keep an eye on him. The market this year has some guys with promising futures, but with very little seasoning.

The administration/Jack may not think there are any candidates worth hiring considering the buyout.
I personally don't agree but that could be the thought process.

Well you know ND ideology...everyone should beat down NDs door to come here, athlete or coach...because it is ND of course!

Paraphrasing what I read from Brian Driskell:
Werner reportedly hadn't heard from ND since September. That was more troubling to him & his family than the 4-8 record.
Urban & Co. rolled out the red carpet this past weekend. After telling Pete he understood why he'd want to attend ND, Meyer recounted why he chose UF over ND back in '04 & knowing what he knows now he wouldn't consider ND as a coach for a plethora of reasons.
Werner didn't plan on decommitting until Fickle did an in-home on Monday to play up the rumors & instability at ND.
