Who do you start Saturday?

With Golson cleared, maybe you want to rest him before Oklahoma, or maybe you want him to get the reps. On the flip side Tommy has come off the bench and performed very well this year. Finally, Kelly said Hendrix had a great week of practice splitting reps with Tommy...do you have him share game time this week in case Golson were to go down again and we have a more mobile option ready?

If Golson is 100%, he plays. BYU can blitz well, and is stout against the run, but they're vulnerable through the air. Golson's mobility will allow him to avoid BYU's pressure, and a big day against a weak secondary would do wonders for his confidence heading into the OU game.

But given Kelly's statements over the last week, I doubt Golson is 100%. So Rees will start. But saying so would allow BYU to stop preparing to face a mobile QB, so he throws in some BS about Hendrix having a good week in practice. Count on Rees.

As an aside, I don't see Hendrix becoming anything more than a redzone battering ram for us.

Golson. If he can play, play him. It's been working well so far this season and even though Tommy has been playing magically, I don't know if I can trust him for 4 quarters.

Rees is a great kid and a solid backup but I'm quite certain his flaws would be exposed again had he had the opportunity to play in full games. He's just simply not athletic enough to keep up with the better defenses. BK is playing his cards right this week by making BYU prepare for all 3 qb's that all bring unique abilities to the offense. I think we all know it will be EG under center.

He's just simply not athletic enough to keep up with the better defenses. BK is playing his cards right this week by making BYU prepare for all 3 qb's that all bring unique abilities to the offense. That makes no sense at all, the purpose of changing the play is to avoid the blitz the pressure. Look at the touchdown pass in OT vs Stanford. He reads the blitz changes the play to the best one for the situation and makes the throw (ok the throw wasn't pretty). I am not saying to start Rees but I think everyone saying that he is going to get sacked while Golson won't are being a little crazy. Golson holds the ball too long and has a tendency to fumble. Not exactly great traits to have against a good front seven. Just saying. I am already on the record as saying that if Golson is 100% you start him but you Rees bashers crack me up. Golson is perfect and Rees is nothing but a back up. SMH.

If Golson is good to go, he's gotta be the guy. If the game goes as it should, he will make plenty of plays, and building his confidence is more important than anything right now. Plus I'm not sold on BYU's highly-ranked defense (they haven't faced offenses remotely close to what NDs D has seen), so I think there will be a few big plays for the youngster to hit.

I know, right. This is no accident. Kelly does a great job of keeping his QB's ready to compete. While Pike/Callaros were completely different skillsets compared to Rees/Golson, this two QB system has worked for Kelly before.

The reason to be confident is that BYU's offense is a dumpster fire, and their QB turns the ball over a lot. Our defense (hopefully Te'o) may score enough points to BYU on their own.

Reasons to be nervous? They have a talented front seven and they like to blitz. If our OL has a bad day, BYU could easily produce enough QB hurries, sacks, fumbles, interceptions and defensive TDs to make this an uncomfortable game for us. Mendenhall surely recognized the simple method opposing defenses used to shut down Rees last season: stack the box on standard downs and drop eight on passing downs.

That said, I don't expect it to be close. But we'll have to pray that Tommy's decision-making has improved sufficiently so that he doesn't get pressured into those mistakes anymore.

I find this arguement funny. People can't get faster or stronger? Seriously? I know that he will never be a dual threat QB with a huge arm but he can't get faster and stronger is just crazy. Many people get stronger and faster in their early 20's.

I think some folks are over analyzing things. Kelly does not strike me as the Belichick type who likes to blow smoke up peoples asses just for the hell of it. If he says Golson is ok to play, then I think he's ok to play. I fully expect Golson on the field and Rees on the bench.

It is hard to imagine Tommy Rees ever developing the mobility of Everett Golson. The arm? Maybe. Someday. But not the feet. Some things you're either born with or not.

What exactly did Mendenhall say? I did some Googling, but all I found was an artcile where he answered some questions with generic responses how BYU isn't for everyone, and it seemed to be a knock more against Notre Dame than Te'o.

On the other hand, the article had some comments made of gold at the bottom. This was one of them:

Manti Teo went to ND because he knew he’d get his a$$ handed to him at USC. As far as BYU goes they’re not even top 3 in their own conference. I am from Hawaii and seen Te’o play and I’m telling you right now he is the most overrated player I have ever seen in relation to how high of a recruit he was. I meant significantly faster and stronger. It's not like next year Tommy will have the arm strength like Golson, or the speed. It's God given talent.

Agreed, but it is by no means a given that Golson will ever mentally get to Tommy's level. I don't think that Rees will turn into Golson but if he can add a little bit of movement within the pocket that is all he would need.
