I share your concerns about them stretching the game out over 3 or more installments, feels like a complete money grab. Midgar is a big city and could do well on it's own, but I don't know about the rest of the world. Midgar made up the first 4-8 hours of Disc 1 in a game with 70+ hours into it. There was a lot more they could have done with it, but one of the coolest parts of the game was leaving the city and seeing the world is so much bigger. My biggest fear is they're going to water down a story that was already pretty perfect...most fans have only asked Square Enix to just release the 20+ year old game with updated graphics and sound.

Final Fantasy 7 is definitely a treasure though, one of the best in the series and some do consider it the best. It did a lot to bring the series to the mainstream and help Sony get their feet on the ground with the release of their first console. It's worth playing through by itself even today, I think it could give you a greater appreciation for the remake once it's released. There's some other mediums in that universe too, like Dirge of Cerberus, Advent Children, and Crisis Core, but for the most part they're all forgettable and mostly just serve to continue story lines or fill in some backstory.

Cheats are for the weak! There's nothing like grinding low level mobs outside the Chocobo ranch for a dozen hours so you can kill the Midgar Zolom waaaaay before you're supposed to. Of course, learning Beta that early in the game is like a cheat itself though.

Final Fantasy VIII was kind of garbage. The graphics were better from a realism point of view, and the live song "Eyes on Me" was well done and an innovation for video games, but the story was awful and the characters were awful. That's a bad recipe for an RPG. The Draw system for magic was also time consuming, tedious, and frustrating if you're a min-maxing type of player. The only other redeeming quality I can say it had was the Card Game, I did enjoy it as a diversion...a bit of decent icing on a dry and tasteless cake. VII is almost always considered to be the superior game, and the subsequent movies/sequels they released for it should tell you all you need to know.

Maybe, this is why I remember FF8 fondly. I did love the card game. I was like 13 when I played it, what the hell did I know at the time lol. Maybe because I played them in completion back to back, I just remember loving FF8. Sounds like one of these days I need to play OG FF7 and relive it.

Yeah, the characters in 7 are just generally better (With the exception of Cait Sith...you weird Japanese people...). Far superior antagonist in Sephiroth. The story is rich and engaging with layers of complexity. I would say even the combat system is far better too as the Draw system in 8 can slow down combat and make it a chore. As far as side games, Chocobo Racing > VIII's Card Game too imo. There was something fun about raising/breeding Chocobos to create a winner and destroy the competition.

i did download the FF7 Remake demo last night, even though I do have it on preorder (I hope my fears mentioned above aren't true). Haven't gotten to play it yet though.

Played through the demo last night. It's pretty short, it's basically just a rendition of the first mission in the game. They did an excellent job recreating all the scenes down to the dialogue and the character movements/images. There was a lot of added dialogue too, of course.

I'll say this, the combat is pretty fast paced and flashy. If you play on the Normal Mode it's a turnless Action game where you can dodge and block attacks on the fly and slash to your heart's content without waiting. You build ATB through attacking and I think blocking, which you use to cast spells and use abilities.

The trash fights are fun and fast paced, but the boss fights? Grueling. I got to the final boss of the demo and he was kicking my ass! I was stockpiling potions all through the first dungeon and I damn near wiped them ALL out on that last fight. I even had to use an Ether to regain MP, which I HATE doing because I'm a cheap bastard and like to stockpile them for rainy days (Typically never to be used). The fight was waaaay more involved than it was in the original game, with multiple phases and altering strategies. It was fun, but it felt like the difficulty was a bit high...especially for a first boss. At least there's a challenge, and you can always turn down difficulty. There may even be a Turn Based mode, I didn't read through the difficulty settings carefully, so for those that like the old school combat that could be an alternative. All in all I think it took between 12-15 minutes to do the fight, and there weren't any real breaks in the action.

If I had to be critical of one thing in the game it's the party AI. Since the default difficulty is more Action based, you're in control of just one character at a time (Although you can switch which character you're using at will, and you can also issue commands to party members at any given time). It's great that the other party members can do their own thing while you control one guy, but the AI ain't that smart in my experience so far. For instance, as mentioned you need to build ATB for abilities and spells by attacking. If a certain party member is carrying Cure and you need a heal, the AI may have spent all their ATB doing other actions and you won't be able to heal yourself when you need to which is...problematic. The AI doesn't seem to want to heal you by itself, although maybe there's a setting to change that. To go along with that, if you're fighting a machine and it's weakness is Thunder (Like the last boss), the AI seems to spend much of their ATB using normal attacks rather than saving ATB for Thunder casts. Every time I tried to switch to Barrett to cast Thunder he had no ATB to use it....annoying. So, hopefully there's a place to configure party AI. I spent most of the time controlling Cloud, while Barrett was carrying the Cure and Thunder Materia, both of which were the most useful...and I could only seem to use them by switching to Barrett to prevent the AI from burning his ATB for attack abilities. I probably could have swapped the Materia to Cloud instead...but you can't change character's load outs mid battle which is how the original game was anyway. If I knew how stupid the AI was going to be I would have put the important Materia on Cloud before the big fight.

I've already uninstalled the demo, but I think I'm going to redownload it and check out the other difficulty modes to see what I like more. I'm also going to check to see if there's a way to configure that AI in the settings. I prefer a challenge, but there's something soothing and nostalgic about the old school turn based action. I'm a sucker for JRPGs in that respect, grew up on Dragon Warrior and the original Final Fantasy games.

I hated the FF series, all of it. It's strange I guess because I loved the og Dragon Warrior games. I really like some other RPGs of that general nature but something about FF just, sucks,... like characters carrying sword bazookas that are bigger then they are just for example etc etc just always turns me off. Oh well...

On a related note I'm SUPER looking forward to the next Elder Scrolls... it can't come soon enough and we are prob like five years away still... It appears my hypocrisy knows no bounds.

You should try the new Dragon Quest 11 game. It was pretty good, especially Post Game.

Anyone considering going first gen release with any of the next gen consoles?? After having about 8 red lights of death on the 360 I have been pretty shy about paying any of the first shipment consoles when they hit the market but who knows...

For the first time I waited a year or two for the PS4. Kids have severely drained my gaming budget. Before that I always had a first release, even going so much to Ebay one of the first PS3s for $700. I was in my mid 20s, stupid, and with a lot of disposable income at the time.

I'll probably stay away from the first run of PS5's.

I'll grab the PS5 Pro whenever it's announced, and upgrade my TV at the same time to get the most out of it.

I am also going to try and wait and make Cyberpunk the first game I play on the new system/TV, that way I can be blown away by the game AND the graphics on the TV.

My 50" Emerson, a Walmart-on-Black-Friday special in 2016, is still going strong, but the picture leaves something to be desired these days on certain channels.

I basically committed to never buying any game or console within the first year of its release. I've saved a lot of money. It's not hard for me because I only play single-player games. Sports games are the only ones I buy within the first year but only after they go on sale. And I never buy the same sports game 2 years in a row.

I plan to buy the PS5 if and when the price drops. If it doesn't drop within the first 2 years I will reconsider.

You save so much money long term if you follow this pattern, I do the same exact thing now. It's especially true with Steam Sales. I typically don't buy anything unless it's $20 or less these days. Wait a year or two and almost every game falls to that price point.

NCAA would get me every year, and MLB does now... but with NHL, FIFA and anything else I've been able to do this for the most part...

I probably won't hold off long enough for a console price drop, but I don't buy until there's something I have to play. I'm not sure what that is at the moment for either console, since Playstation is about to blow out its last year with the PS4 for all of its exciting projects (I thought Ghosts of Tsushima would be PS5 for this reason) and Xbox has no exclusives worth a system (and I have a good PC). Looking down the list I guess I might get a PS5 when the next GOW comes out?

Cyberpunk drops in September... you could wait 2-3 months for the PS5 version

I forgot about that game... That's the one that looks like it's void of dragons and warlocks and more real world based right??

Europa Universalis is about to do a MAJOR update to the Holy Roman Empire and Papacy on EU4. Fucking pumped.

In my current iteration of the game, I managed to unite Germany under the Teutonic Order(no small feat), managed to reform from a monastic order to a constitutional monarchy.

Recently intervened in a Scandinavian Civil War in order to preserve their monarchy.

Currently planning on launching a war to free the Austrians, Hungarians, and Balkan peoples from the yolk of the Ottoman Turks. The plan there is to use my now powerful navy to prevent Ottoman reinforcements from getting into Europe and dominate any Ottoman troops trapped in Europe.

I'm probably ~half way through "Days Gone". It's good, I like the Bike and the character. The gameplay is solid.

Not a "must have" but worth the $17.99 it is/was on PS Store.

It's twice been part of the weekly deal, discounted down to 18. But it goes back to its regular 40 again. I had to wait a while on it because I missed the first discount.
