Got the platinum trophy for 'God of War,' so I went against Whiskey's advice and started 'Horizon Zero Dawn' last night...

Pretty good so far! It's a unique take on "scout the enemy, find the weak point, then attack, but also be stealthy"

I've been doing more exploring and hunting than I have quests so far, but what little I've gotten from the story already does seem kind of dumb. You live outside of the tribe with your father figure, and the tribe is supposed to shun you, not speaking to you or interacting with you because it's against the law... but everybody you encounter speaks to you and gives you quests anyway lol.

I can get past that as long as the action stays fresh, which I'm assuming it will based on the different weapons, ammo, and trapping strategies I'm already picking up on. It seems like there will be many different ways to take out enemies, depending on what they are and how you like to play.

I had a hell of a time with the first 'big' enemy (a Sawtooth), because I didn't realize how powerful one of the early skills was until I gave it a try.

Excited to get back into it at lunch today.

Thanks I hate it. Microsoft and Sony have forgotten what makes console gaming great and they've gone the PC-lite route. Not interested. I guess I'm a Nintendo guy now.

What makes console gaming great that you can’t accomplish on the new gen of consoles?

Genuinely curious what you mean, not challenging your position

I also think it’s kind of cool that the new Xbox will look like a bigger version of all the smart home devices.

It's nothing that it can't do per se, it's more where they choose to focus. Everything is "look how technically impressive this is" rather than "look how much fun this is." They also don't seem interested in distinguishing themselves with any kind of brand identity. It's all so generic.
I also think it’s kind of cool that the new Xbox will look like a bigger version of all the smart home devices.
Aren't smart home devices almost universally circular?

Sunk 3 hours into the Witcher 3 tonight. The combat is insanely hard. I'm burning the game.

I'm going to spend 4 days at my in-laws' around Christmas and there are long stretches of nothing going on and there's only so many Christmas movies I can watch. Plan on bringing Luigi's Mansion 3, Return of the Obra Dinn, and Baba Is You. I've been saving those for this vacation.

I picked up Baba Is You after I beat Obra Dinn — my god is this game hard. By far the hardest puzzle game I’ve ever played.

I am an average gamer at best and never really had a problem. Make sure you are not taking on missions that are above your level. Do all the side missions because they will help boost your stats.

Let me know what you think -- it's a fun play.

It was worth playing but didn't like a couple of things:

1) You can't figure out who some people are without noticing verrry obscure images. I remember there was one guy that you identify because of the type of pipe that is hanging by his cot.

2) Consequently, I had to look for some help on the Internet once in a while.

3) I get the game isn't supposed to be high-tech but it really wasn't necessary to make me walk to each body to initiate each memory. I wish there was a way to just do it from the menu. Maybe there was but I'm not aware of it. Also there was a super annoying chapter where you could only access certain memories through other people's memories. In general, the game made you do a lot of time-wasting work that was frustrating and didn't add to the game.

My only chance is to restart and I'll do that if my wife doesnt get me a new game for xmas.

I'm a level 7 which isn't that far, but also no slouch given I'm ~5 hours in. I deal out ~120 damage per swing of my silver sword.

Currently at some broken up castle with the hot chick where i jump down and she stays at the top level... and I get absolutely mauled in seconds by 3 wolves. I have armour too.

I've defeated beasts/cave troll which you'd think were tougher than the wolves, but these wolves hammer me within 20 secons and I'm doing everything possible to dodge, protect, and kill.

The default settings have Geralt automatically draw the correct sword when battle begins, but in case you accidentally turned that off at some point... using the wrong sword (like silver v. wolves, or steel v. monsters) will absolutely tank your combat effectiveness. Just something to look out for.

Still not sure what quest you're talking about. Is the woman Yennefer, Kiera, etc.? Regardless, don't get too discouraged. Packs of wolves are legitimately one of the most challenging fights in the game. An important thing to remember is that you can simply block their attacks. Since monsters generally can't be blocked, it's easy to get in a habit of just dodging, but when wolves are coming after you in waves, dodging leaves virtually no chance to attack. Just hold block for the most part, don't let them surround you, and counter-attack whenever you see an opening.

Thanks Whiskey. The game does whip out my axe so the "choose the best weapon" logic must be on. I always draw my silver sword otherwise.

It's Yennifer. It's an old castle-looking platform with no roof, uninhabited. I can't fire up the system right now of I'd give you an exact situation.

I'll give it another go but if not, will likely restart. I get overwhelmed by the options of potions, weapons, materials, etc.

The only quest I can think of that: (1) involves Yennefer; (2) has her staying high while you drop down; and (3) fighting wolves, is In Wolf's Clothing. That's a level 15 quest in Skellige, which could explain why you're getting your ass kicked. I normally don't head over there until level 15 at the earliest. You might want to return to Velen or Novigrad and keep questing there.

It's been awhile but I think there's a big number that points out what level you need to be to do a mission. Going even a few levels over will get you your ass kicked.

Adding onto this, most quests have both a number (the recommended level) and a color. You should always prioritize your lowest level green quests because it'll keep you from getting in over your head (like in Skellige), but also because quests turn gray and stop giving experience once you outlevel them by 6+.

Well now I think lasting 15 seconds against a 15 quest as a lowely 7... I might be the bes Witcher 3 player of all time.

What a difference an understanding makes. I might be the GOAT.

I'm going to get after it after xmas.

Path of Exile just released a new league and expansion update. This game is fantastic and it's free. If you were a fan of the Diablo or Titan Quest series, this is up your alley.

Just leave. Find a sign post and fast travel back to the continent. You should be able to pick up where you left off later.

Pretty good haul this year, lots of good games to share with the family. Yoshi's Crafted World, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, Mario Tennis Aces, Luigi's Mansion 3, and Kirby Star Allies. Plus Monopoly and Risk.

My wife and girls have been out of town for a few days so naturally I ripped through an entire light side female sentinel KOTOR run. That game is still so good.

My university is closed until 1/6, but my wife goes back to work tomorrow and the kids go back to daycare.

That’s 14ish hours of uninterrupted gaming time between Thursday and Friday. It’s gonna be glorious.

Between Koon talking about his struggles and the show on Netflix (which I haven't watched), I started looking into purchasing the Witcher 3 to go into my video game backlog...

It was like $12 on Amazon three months ago when I first looked into it, but I guess the show has driven demand back up, so the complete edition is back up to like $36.

BUT! I got a heads-up from a gaming group on Facebook that the PSN winter sale was pretty good, and ended up getting it from the Playstation store last night at 11:49pm for $14, right before the sale closed at midnight.

So now it's downloaded to my external hard drive with the other 4 games I still need to play lol.
