So I decided to double-dip on my gaming to try and play catch-up on my list.

I've got RDR1 on my PS3 during lunch breaks, and I've got God of War on the PS4 at night once the family is asleep.

Started God of War for the 'first' time last night, after a false start a couple of months ago...

I am severely out of practice with combat strategy. I tried to start on the "Give Me a Challenge" difficulty, and I barely got past the first group of Draugr while I tried to figure out what I was doing. I am awful.

Once I got to the first troll? Pshhhhhh. Switched that shit to "Give Me a Balanced Experience" lol.

It does feel really nice when you use the axe, like there is actually substance to it, and I love throwing it at a distant enemy and then recalling it to bash it through two other enemies that are in its path.

So far so good, though I fear I didn't explore the Woods near my home enough before moving on to the next area. Now I can't go back, and I'm fairly certain I missed a rune chest or something.

Made it to the Lake of Nine in God of War last night... it's that classic point that I reach in every adventure game where my low-grade OCD starts to go haywire because there's so much to do and explore.

Do I proceed with a "main story" mission, because it might unlock gameplay mechanics that will help me explore more fully?

Or, do I explore as much as I can BEFORE proceeding with the main story, because I might miss something helpful that is discoverable via side quest?

Right now, I've been sent on a quest by a lake spirit to destroy a statue of Thor... but it is taking me wayyyy far away from the bridge over the lake, which is where my next main-quest marker is... so much anxiety lol

Outer Worlds is getting a lot of praise right now, all while Bethesda is getting eviscerated for their latest move with Fallout 76. The memes have been hilarious, some of which cross over (Outer Worlds is like the Fallout we wanted, but got 76 instead).

A lot of early impressions about Death Stranding are...not good. One magazine won't score it bc the reviewer can't bring himself to finish it:

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Edge 339, on sale next Thursday, has a four-page preview based on 40 hours with Death Stranding. There is no number at the end.</p>— Nathan Brown (@nathan_brown) <a href="https://twitter.com/nathan_brown/status/1190186860821319681?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">November 1, 2019</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

I don't know that it's not good, it just appears to be extremely divisive. Lots of 10/10s but lots of reviewers appear to have really disliked it. Basically, it seems like a game that is purposeful in being slow and cumbersome to make its point. Tim Rogers described it as "being forced to eat 50 pounds of vegetables at gunpoint." He also called it "one of the most joyful video game experiences of my life" and said he cried with his dog after finishing it. So.... *shrug*

I hate vegetables. Well, most vegetables. Are we talking 50lbs of potatoes or 50lbs of broccoli?

It's weird because if you read the content of the reviews before noting the scores, the 6/10 reviews and the 10/10 reviews are very similar. It seems like it's getting a bump because of Kojima. Maybe it's just me, but a lot of the gameplay videos I've seen makes it look like a chore to play.

I'd chalk that up more to game reviewers on average knowing about 15 different "instant pot" phrases to express their critical opinion. I think "Fans of Kojima will love it but it's not for everyone" reviews both getting 6's and 10's is more on game journalist being terrible at writing than an inherent bias.

Obligatory: "Playing Batman Arkham Knight really made me feel like batman."

I'm probably the biggest Metal Gear series fan on this site. Therefore have an interest in Kojima. Been on the fence about getting Death Stranding, but given the time commitment, probably replay the MG series instead.

I have a theory that Death Stranding is a social [media] experiment.

Kojima's world will unlock to a fuller, grander extent, and be more player-friendly, if enough players work hard enough to take care of each other. Leave supplies and helpful items for other players, and actively participate in curating paths and safe houses, and the game goes well for everyone.

If more people try to be dicks or by keeping stolen goods that belong to other players, or hoarding things for themselves in isolation, the world of Death Stranding will remain barren and isolated.

The endgame could all be connected, for everyone, or it could be slightly different for people in different regions, based on the general 'social' activities of people playing the game.

I'd bet that people playing offline or without internet connection, in total isolation, will get the most bleak set of circumstances that the story offers.

I sort of think the same thing, though apparently the other players "changes" to the world don't show up until you complete the first delivery into that area. So everyone is going to have a hard time of it at first, but if everyone works together then the idea that people will be putting down freeways to make the experience much easier seems to have some truth.

I think it's interesting, but I'm curious if it actually comes to fruition that unlocking the mystery of the "Death Stranding" and reconnecting society will depend on the social element.

It would be cool if Kojima is testing the idea of "social" networking by having different servers give different visuals during the endgame or something.

Like, if you were on a server with a bunch of solid folks, when you arrive on the West Coast to complete the game, there is less bleak imagery of 'Death Stranding' stuff and some lush greenery regenerating around a bustling city or something, instead.

Or, if you played offline totally, or on a server where everyone devolved into isolationism and hoarding supplies for themselves rather than leaving them in lockers and safehouses, the environment remains bleak throughout.

The missions and the story remain the same, and even most of the cut-scenes, but the visual atmosphere is altered as the character reaches the end of his journey, and maybe you get an 'A, B or C' ending situation depending on user interactions and total number of 'likes' that humans shared with other humans.

I doubt it goes that deep, and it's likely just Kojima making some type of witty commentary on social media and society... but it would be dope if the game itself changed based on his measures, rather than him just pulling one over on everybody with a massive, pointless fetch-quest game.

I beg to differ...

Very interesting thought. I could see a guy like Kojima pulling something like that off. I really like the thought of the game. And those that don't like it, I think that is part of his desire too. He wants some people to be utterly frustrated and bored. He wants that tedious gameplay.

The co-op for Luigi's Mansion 3 is pretty fun. My youngest and I are about half way through the story together.

It's been a very rough generation for Xbox but I am getting the feeling Microsoft is going to absolutely crush next generation with their xcloud and xbox game pass next cycle. Sony will continue to get a purchase from me on the talent of their in-house studios, but I'm leaning toward buying an xbox first next cycle atm because the gamepass is an absurdly good deal.

I've been loving Divinity 2. It's an old-school DnD-style RPG with tons of meaningful choices and a deep turn-based combat system. It's also hard, with a steep learning curve; and your success is pretty gear-dependent, so Act I can be very unforgiving. But if you do a little research on how best to build your party, you'll survive, and the payoff is real once you get your bearings.

Really looking forward to this, I just have to find the time. It's been sitting there waiting in my Steam library for some time.

Any Jedi: Fallen Order feedback?

Haven't played it personally yet, but I've watched it being streamed on Twitch quite a bit this week. Reminds me a lot of Uncharted: cinematic, too much platforming, over-the-top playable cut-scenes, and wonky combat mechanics. Seems to do a good job of at least creating an immersive Star Wars experience, and if that's enough to make you happy, you should probably pick it up. Don't think I'll be buying it though.

Sounds like a likely candidate to be $40 on Black Friday.

Reviews on Star Wars have been good. It sounds like it's a good experience that kind of leaves you wanting more at the end, and wishing there had been more depth after the fact. But the combat looks great, especially in boss fights. Not just hack-and-slash like 'Force Unleashed.'

I'll wait a year until the GOY edition is out with all the DLC or unlockables or whatever.

Can someone sell me on a Nintendo Switch?

I did not grow up with a Nintendo so outside of Mario Bros and a few others, I'm clueless. I literally know nothing about a switch but heard a couple of ppl mention it lately in a positive way, so curious.

If your wife games or you have kids that are coming to that age it's a must... if you are a shooter/sports gamer lone wolf type then there isn't munch point imo.
