Sorry to interrupt the red dead talk, but I bought Madden 18. It is the first one I have gotten since probably Madden 13 or Madden 12. Hate every aspect of it besides some online head to head, and even then, the games take too long.

I've tried playing Madden over the last few years... it's a really bad game now imo and has been for some time. They need to totally change everything from the ground up in terms of gameplay but they're still making money and have no competition so yeah...

TL;DR
This video is pointless because GTA has always favored dick jokes over serious moments. What did the guy expect?

I disagree on this post for several reasons. (1) I think the video contains valid criticism because I think its pretty obvious that GTA does have some aspirations of making a "statement" about American culture. There's no reason to bring up government surveillance, terrorism, gentrification, the struggle of leaving your born-into socioeconomic class, if you have no intentions of making a statement. GTA V deals with all of these. But that statement is completely devoid of any actual point. It just ends up being a bunch of politically charged stereotype humor with poop jokes. I think the video goes into good detail as to why you could reach that conclusion so I won't retype here. If you disagree with the premise that any part of GTA's storytelling or world is meant to be an actual artistic statement then you'll reject anything I type here anyway.

(2) Instead, lets act under the assumption that you're correct and that this whole lovingly crafted game world is a big joke. There is no intent by Rockstar to leave any message or statement. There's still a huge criticism to level at the game: The joke sucks. It's mean-spirited and crass, sure, but most importantly its unoriginal, its lazy, and its not funny. It never rises above anything an edgy teenager would joke about with his friends and doesn't come close to other video game edgy comedy (like Southpark or Saints Row for example).

Actually Southpark is a great example. That gif the other day where the South Park game's difficulty selection screen also changed your skin color darker had a more meaningful statement and was funnier and was more clever than anything Rockstar has ever pulled off in GTA.

So my larger point is that, however you choose to view the GTA series, the writing sucks.

I guess my point is that the writing only sucks if you're expecting some lovingly-crafted story with redeeming moments.

Even if you think the "joke" sucks or the commentary has no direction, I think the point is that they aren't trying to seriously do those things, so why try to judge the writing at all? They just make some rambling commentary on society (and heist movies) to provide background noise over the giant, beautiful world they create, where chaos reigns and logic is on the backburner.

The guy in the video waxes poetic about standing in the mountains, looking at the city in twilight as the sun sets, and then gets annoyed when the moment is ruined by a cougar that attacks... except that's exactly what Rockstar wants, and how they write. They want a cougar to ruin your perfect moment, and they want to use hidden doodles and cave paintings to send you looking for a mythical jetpack that doesn't actually exist in GTAV, and they want you to listen to the dialogue hoping for Oscar-worthy moments, only for the character to purposely spoil those moments of "substance."

Well I don't know about that, but if you listen to Jimmy and Michael talk, you can tell that they are purposely subverting expectations of quality dialogue. They literally set up moments for Jimmy and Michael to have relationship breakthroughs, but then Michael just reverts to shithead, or Jimmy asks for a new car instead of being like "let's hang out more, dad," and they do those things on a pivot, which signifies intention to me.

And back to the video, that's how GTA has always been. Why is the guy mad that he got wasted by a cougar in the mountains in a GTA game that stressed the inclusion of hostile wildlife lol?

That would be like getting upset that the radio in the game has talkshows that are silly.

Also of note: The timing of this is ironic, because I just started playing GTAV the other day.

Gonna follow the guides to maximize $$$ via the heists and stock market.

Could the second from the right be Javier Escuella?? Doesn't look like it but he is the one notable missing... or maybe it's Javier second from left next to John?? I remember he had ammo belts like that...

Rockstar styled theories:

-Young(er) Landon Ricketts is completely overwhelmed/humiliated by the gang (or by a key gang member) at some point and leaves in shame, alluding to his 'retirement' (hiding) in Mexico in RRD1.
- Marshal Johnson is shown as a complete green horn, scared half to death until one of the pose kills the local Marshal he admires.
-Irish is shown as an Eastern European immigrant coming off the boat and instantly finds himself in trouble and is forced to assume a new identity.
-Seth is shown as a normal, well adjusted person with a prosperous family life and the like... the last we see of him his obtains a map or rumor of treasure.
-Abigail is shown working at a whorehouse the gang uses as a hideout.
-Bonnie MacFarlene falls madly in love with Morgan during many missions together but her father steps in and nixes the entire thing.
-You help Uncle randomly steal some horses.
-Colonel Alldende is basically the exact same character as Abraham Reyes in RDD1

You guys are really making me miss gaming. I love story-mode games. The Metal Gear series was my favorite. Never really got into GTA, but played a couple hours of Red Redemption and thought it was fun. But the character development you guys are debating sounds awesome.

DUDE!... I'm pretty sure it is:

No way. Pretty sure Bonnie was born and raised on her dads farm and didn't seem like the type to be stabbing dudes fingers in bars. Also the voice actor doesn't sound like her at all. This lady sounds hard. Bonnie had a cute accent but nothing like that. Also she'd be way younger than shown in this trailer if the timeline is how we thought.

It looks JUST LIKE her tho... her mother?? There has to be a tie in somehow... and Bonnie wasn't a young girl remember, she's basically John's age in RDD1...

That would be my expectation. Marston is in his mid-30s during RDR, so this story arc likely happens 7-10 years earlier.

If it's within ten years it makes more sense for that to be Bonnie than for it to be her mother or some other MacFarlene... I mean, it clearly is a MacFarlene female imo. Why would they highlight her like that and have her look exactly like Bonnie otherwise??

According to the wiki, Marston is 37 during the events of RDR, so assuming he makes an appearance in this prequel, it probably can't take place much earlier than 10-15 years prior. Unless there's a time gap in this narrative, too (*play as Arthur Morgan in the 1880s, mid-story climax breaks with "10 years later...", then Marston comes in at the end of the game). That's the only way I could see Morgan plausibly interacting with Bonnie's mother.

There can be other blonde women in the story. And like I said, unless Bonnie had some crazy back story we don't know it makes no sense for her to be in a bar wearing a cowboy hat and stabbing guys hands. By every indication Bonnie is a 100% goody two shoes civilian.

Also I'll be honest I'll be disappointed if this story takes place in the exact same area with all the same side characters. My understanding was that the gang was driven to the area near Mexico by government agents and impending civilization. Also it wouldn't make much sense for the gang to be hanging around the same characters because then they'd all know more about John Marston and the gang in RDR.

I get the barring and knife fighting for sure... but she's not just some blonde character... they even have the same freckles and eyes, I mean, it's her... or someone who looks exactly like her.

It won't be the same area exactly but ive played enough rock star games to know they often have SOME NPCs overlap games within a series. It's not a question of will they have a few NPCs mixed in, just which ones. I think today clearly showed the MacFarlenes are included here.

My best guess is the map will be much bigger, MAY include some of the same base territories and even towns etc, but will be completely new for the most part.
