Nintendo needs to wake up and make its first-party IP available on other consoles, especially when you consider the fact that they're not printing enough of their own consoles to keep up with demand in the first place. That kind of invalidates the argument that hardware sales driven by exclusive software is enough to offset the incremental software sales they'd get from other platforms.

Right now, they're counting on people paying $360 JUST for a (really awesome looking) Zelda game. That means they're going to get $0 from everyone except the most hardcore fanboys and those with exorbitant gaming budgets. I'd happily spend $60 for Breath of the Wild if I could play it on my Xbox. I'd buy Mario. I'd buy Smash Brothers. I'd buy Donkey Kong. I'd buy Metroid. I'd buy Star Fox. I might even buy a Pokemon game if they released something with an OG150 mode. But I'm not hardcore enough to buy a separate console for any of those. It's a shame.

it's basically another go at the Wi right? Sub par performance and graphics but unique titles cos its nintendo?

Well for Nintendo, it's supposed to represent a *significant* upgrade in performance to match the current gen competitors.

What it really means is what they lack in console power, they make up for with the portability, the custom controller with multiple functions, and the unique Nintendo titles.

It is a super unique thing, and it's nice to see that full titles will run on the portable device, which actually seems like a pretty cool accomplishment... though I'm no tech guy and I don't know the specs, or if an iPad could do what the Switch does.

Nostalgia market. Spend three years porting every NES, SNES, N64, Gameboy, GBC, GBA, and DS title into an e-store. Sell access to that e-store by selling a console like the Switch, that offers *modern* console games and experiences, while also offering exclusive access to the Nostalgia Store.

Bam, I just put Nintendo back on top.

It's less powerful than the original PlayStation 4, which came out four years ago. Four years, in the computing space, is an eternity. This thing is obsolete on launch. You alluded to it, but portability isn't a feature anymore when everyone's cell phone is a supercomputer.

I still think exclusivity is a mistake. Do what you described, sure. Maybe make the Nostalgia Store free to the owners of Nintendo hardware. But also make the games available for purchase via Xbox Live and PSN.

Put Pokemon Red and Blue on Xbox Live for $10. Sell one million units in like three hours.

I find it funny that people are complaining about the lack of games at launch. 90% of launches are complete dog-shit. Name the last great launch.

Supply issues aside, Nintendo is actually making a pretty smart move here. They are consolidating their businesses into one platform -- which will make supporting it with first-party IP much easier. Similar to the 3DS, I think the Switch will dominate this handheld generation and become the go-to platform for RPG gamers. Also wouldn't be surprised to see indie developers flock to the Switch.

That's because the Switch is an under-powered POS stuck in the last generation of consoles.

...or it's the most powerful handheld ever made. Nintendo is not competing with Scorpio or PS4 Pro, not sure when people will realize that. They could easily make a machine that will get Madden, COD, and other AAA releases every year but choose to play in niche markets.

Except there won't be a handheld market in five years. That's what Nintendo doesn't get. They're still trying to compete with Microsoft and Sony but that's not the game anymore. They're competing with Samsung and Apple, and those guys innovate a lot faster than the hardware guys do.

Microsoft figured this out with their "Play Anywhere" initiative. Say what you want about Windows 10, but Microsoft designing their content for an operating system and not for a specific piece of hardware is brilliant. They've seen the convergence between console, PC, and mobile, and have adjusted their long-term strategy accordingly.

I play overwatch on XB1. That's the only game I really play. Nintendo switch only has like 5 titles out for it right now, but they have more coming in the fall so I wouldn't buy it right now.

I generally agree with you, but I don't trust Nintendo or those other consoles to play nice and get everything ported. I think it would be a half-hearted effort, like what Nintendo e-shop is now.

Right now, they will port throwback titles to Wii, WiiU, and 3DS, and that's awesome, but they never port to "All of the Above." It's usually one or the other. If I want Pokemon Blue, I need a New 3DS. If I want Fire Emblem, I need a WiiU. If I want [exclusive], I need a Wii. They take exclusivity to whole new and stupid levels by making their own content exclusive system-to-system, within their own goddamn family of products.

The best way to break that would be to offer everything on one console and in one e-shop, rather than porting to various consoles (like now), or cross-platform, which I don't think would ever happen.

It would take Pokemon Inc. doing legal somersaults to separate from Nintendo and getting rights to sell on Xbox Live or PSN.

picked up Witcher 3 off the discount rank the other day... haven't had time to fire it up yet, but if it doesn't live up to expectations I blame Whiskey....

been playing College Hoops 2k8 again, I dust that off every year it seems... still a very fun game.

You don't need to port every title. Just publish an officially-sanctioned emulator and run the titles through it.

Good luck. I was reading some reviews and I'm pretty sure Witcher 3 has neither Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson nor Christiano Ronaldo.

There isn't much evidence to support that. The success of the 3DS (60+ million sold) shows the market appeal of dedicated portable gaming devices. Kids and hardcore gamers love that device for its design and library.

Apple/Samsung has shown no interest in catering to gamers in the past 10 years. The iPhone remains a POS to play games on and the software support is weak. Apple/Samsung doesn't develop IP and no major developers have dedicated significant resources to iPhone exclusive games. The iPhone will always be the place people turn to for mindless puzzle games with in-app purchases.

All that being said, I would be pretty hyped if Apple or Google decided to make a real play in gaming and bought out Nintendo.

The Wii U was the first time I haven't bought a Nintendo console at launch. The gaming library really isn't impressive anymore. Graphics don't concern me that much since I'm an old school gamer, so a system that isn't technologically advanced isn't a big deal. A lack of meaningful titles is a reason not to buy a console though. I don't need Mario Kart 28, seems like Nintendo does an awful lot of resting on their laurels. They try to innovate with the system and the peripherals, but it's all garbage if there aren't many good, unique titles that warrant buying the system.

While I agree that I wish Nintendo would just become the world's greatest video game developer and quit making hardware, it's difficult to say that the handheld market wont exist in several years. Sure that's what economist are saying, but they also said that last generation would be the last successful consoles because PCs/phones were going to eat their lunch. That prediction appeared sound then, but looks really stupid in hindsight.

A friend and I are currently streaming Secret of Mana

https://www.twitch.tv/drowseygod

y u no charge weapon attacks?!
Charge 'em up and release them just a bit away from the boss. If you release them right next to him they won't do damage. The charged attacks will also stun him from time to time and interrupt attacks.

You guys almost had him at the end there! Wiki says the center eye on the Evil Wall has about 1000 health. Your magic was doing close to 150 a hit, so on 5 hits the magic did 750ish damage. As mentioned, the more you cast a certain magic group, the stronger it gets. When you go to hit the big eyes, aim for the outer edge on them...there's something jinky about the hit detection on those Wall bosses.

1-SoM_7_1.png

This is the Level Screen I was talking about, I can't find a screenshot of the Magic Level screen, but it looks very similar and is accessed by hitting the right trigger button from there. If you see those numbers in front of the weapons and magic, it shows how far they are from 100 and getting to the next level. The Magic screen is the same way, there will be a number in front of each Magic group to tell you how far it is from the next level. You can only train a Magic group as far as the number of Mana Seeds you've unlocked (In this case, you've unlocked 2 seeds, so Level 2 Magic). The same goes for your Weapon abilities, you can only train a weapon as far as they've been upgraded, so currently you guys have the Sword upgraded to Level 2 Broadsword I think, which is why your boy can Charge his attack to 2. Your whip hasn't been upgraded at the Blacksmith yet, so you can only charge it to 1 at most. I think your Spear has been upgraded at the Blacksmith, so you may want the girl to switch to the Spear and work it up to Level 2 so she can do more damage. There's also the fact the Whip isn't that strong of a weapon in the beginning of the game.

One more thing. You can set the NPC Sprite to charge his attacks too! It's based on which weapon they're currently using (And their current skill with it), but if you go to the "ACT" menu item I think you can set what level they'll charge their attacks to, in addition to how aggressive or defensive you want the computer to be when controlling him.

Watch the gameplay reveal. Shit looks dope.

The world looks amazing in terms of the actual visuals. Mordor isn't disappointing as a setting, particularly with all of the areas they seem to have created.

Some things I worry about though, based on the video:

No open-world feel - It seems very straight-forward and episodic. Even when it claims that you have "many ways" to infiltrate and take down a fortress, it seems like you pick one way to start based on your army, and then execute actions in that regard.

No flexibility during missions - It seems daunting that you have to figure out how to breach the gate, how to get your forces involved, and how to take down enemies and bosses. But the video actually seems to show a very rigid and non-challenging way of accomplishing things:

- In order to breach the gate, you take down a captain. You don't actually lead the breaching of the gate, and the gate doesn't have weaknesses or health.
- In order to out-flank your enemies, you promote the right minion during mission prep. You don't actually direct your forces to a flanking attack.
- To reach the final boss, you take down another captain.

And that's about it. You reach a check-point where you kill an un-challenging boss, and then things happen. It doesn't seem that your army actually does much of anything. Breaching gates and out-flanking enemies doesn't actually seem to be a "war strategy" thing by commanding forces; it seems to be a "kill the right guy and things happen automatically" deal.

Combat looks easy/repetitive - Nearly every time Talion killed a lesser minion, it was "chop off the leg and make the body go horizontal, then chop off the head." Literally the same animation on every-other kill. Even the kill of the main boss was similar.

Nemesis System - It looks to have been inverted for this game. Rather than enemies getting promoted and subbing in for those defeated, it appears that your own forces advance and fill vacant spots based on conquered fortresses. Perhaps the enemy-side of things is the same, and that a failed attack on a fortress causes a ripple effect that makes every battle tougher.

Overall, this looks awesome, and my worries are probably unfounded, as I'm sure there are things to do between each fortress battle that concern an actual open world. But if not, that is super disappointing.

Can't get over the visuals and the brutality, though. So awesome. Seeing the fortress and how they have cave trolls and orcs strung up and impaled as decoration for intimidation, and how the fortress changes to match the promoted captain after a victory is cool.

Watching a cave troll rip an enemy's head and spine out of his body is brutal. Watching a dragon battle another troll is sweet.

Tolkien spinning in his grave like a top.

To be fair, the map appears to be based in what he really created.

The use of dragons is egregious, as are the fancy cannons mounted to the trolls. He's gonna haunt the production dude that got that approved.

Absolutely. In Tolkein's canon, the concept of an Elven wraith is an impossibility. And one of the major themes of LotR is that Sauron couldn't be defeated by someone like Aragorn simply charging into Mordor with an army. Unfortunately, those concepts stood in the way of making a cool game. Oh well. I'll still probably buy it and enjoy it.

It also stood in the way of making a cool movie. People complain about the Eagles but the army of the dead was far more anti-climactic strictly from a film making perspective. That's why Helm's Deep > Pelennor Fields.

On an unrelated note, my video game time is typically from 7:45 to 8:30 when my daughter is in bed and my wife is in the shower. My wife watched me play For Honor for the first time and her reaction was priceless. "Did his head just pop off? I don't like that."

About 30-45 minutes into the Witcher... first impression, a far more tendious and complex take on Skyrim... this game would have been awesome for me if it had come out when I was ten years younger.... I'm already like, "I'll never find time to fully appreciate this....."

Absolutely. In Tolkein's canon, the concept of an Elven is an impossibility.

What do you mean "Elven"? Talion having Elven powers as a ranger? That ship sailed with the first game, when they desecrated Celebrimbor's memory in order to bring him back like some undead epic war hero.

And one of the major themes of LotR is that Sauron couldn't be defeated by someone like Aragorn simply charging into Mordor with an army. Unfortunately, those concepts stood in the way of making a cool game.

You COULD march into Mordor with an army, and battle Sauron's forces, but it would ultimately be a fruitless effort, because even if you win, you can't destroy his essence without destroying the ring. His spirit will always return and gather power, even if it's as a floating flaming eye.

So you destroy all his trolls and war machines and minions and whatnot, and it's all going to gather again anyway.

I actually think the game could tie nicely into that idea if they end it the way I think they will to fit canon... this guy Talion "wins the game" by taking over all of Mordor and defeating Sauron's forces, only to realize that it's hopeless. Somehow, even in bitter defeat, the spirit of Sauron wins out, and the Flaming Eye destroys the "Ring of Power" that Talion/Celebrimbor crafted. All of the forces they've won and gathered simply served the purpose of building Sauron's army heading into the main story "Lord of the Rings," and Sauron takes them for himself anyway.

Oh well. I'll still probably buy it and enjoy it.

Yup. No matter the perversion, it's always nice to be unreasonable powerful in Middle Earth. Learned it with Gandalf inside the Gates of Gondor in the RotK game.

Check out this reddit post about the problems with The Hobbit trilogy, and you'll have a whole new appreciation for how much Jackson did right in the LotR movies. The studios just wanted an Aragorn story, but the structure of the books basically forced Jackson to tell the Frodo story as well. But The Hobbit didn't provide any such obstacles to him, so he didn't bother telling a Bilbo story, and just told an Aragorn story based on Thorin.

There's definitely a lot there for a completionist like myself, but don't let that turn you off the game. You can just play through the main story line to enjoy the plot and sword play.
