My first multi shooter experience was taking over the cpu labs at my high school, skipping the last weeks worth of classes, and doing a full on Duke Nuke Em like 12 man free for all all day long... our cpu teacher was pretty cool.

Mario - One of the most recognizable figures in any property. Mickey mouse level fame.
Link - the gamers choice. Hero in the most consistently well recieved game franchise all time.
Doomguy - First (and best) space marine to kill a demon with a shotgun. The FPS dude. The silent protagonist.
Cloud Strife - Representative for RPGs. Pikachu wouldn't be a bad choice here either, but I think giving 2 to the big N is enough.

Worst pick of yours is Sonic. Marketing gimmick that often isn't even decent within the mascot platform genre.

I went with Master Chief over Doomguy because he double-dips in FPS as well as online multiplayer. Everyone on your list is almost exclusively single player.

Sonic is in because I prioritized "iconic" over "quality." That's why I left Link out too. Most people see a picture of him and think his name is Zelda.

If you were going to do Nintendo only, obviously it's Mario and Link, then two of Pikachu, Samus, DK, and Kirby.

Final Fantasy is for weebs.

I like this.... so many different ways to go about this.

The Pure popularity/iconic way:

Mario is a shoe in. no contest.

I agree, no Link for the simple fact that anyone that doesn't play video games thinks his name is Zelda. Sonic is tough. I had a Sega Genesis, and his pinball game was the most boring game on it, but Ive never played a main series game -- Mega-Man was the game/character that really got me going into video games. I'm not sure if you considered him or not, but I think I would put him over Sonic personally.

The Pikachu one is the toughest for me. I think it represents JRPGs really well, and I'm grateful for that. While I ventured off toward FF and other RPGs such as Elder scrolls, Fallout, RDR, etc. I think it's a good enough symbol for the industry as it was my first taste of the good life.

You need a FPS character. Master Chief would be good as the Xbox was really needed to boost the gaming industry and make it a three horse race, rather than 2, as well as brought online/competitive gaming into what it is today, which is a huge industry and a huge reason why gaming will continue to grow. But I think Golden Eye is another one that we should consider because it really was the "founding father" of FPS.

Or you could discuss from a more literal view:

Washington = Founding father = Pac-Man

Jefferson = principles of our democracy = Gordon Freeman in half life 2 being a basis for games to come

Lincoln = saved our country = Mario

Theodore = progressivist = Master Chief for the mentioned account above. He took gaming from something you did in your mom's basement, to what competitive gaming is today: a popular and completely acceptable form of life that's growing faster than any other sport in the world.

Can't wait to see if others contribute. I lean more toward the first because I like talking more about what's iconic and representative, than historical data. But both have merits.

Megaman
Master Chief
Elder Scrolls protagonist

If the Witcher had lured me to play the first two and if they were as good as 3, it would've been enticing.

Good question, because it would change the answers pretty drastically:

On a personal level:

Mario
Ryu (doubles as both Street Figher and Ninja Gaiden)
Kefka (Cloud is more known, but for me, he was the first real villain of the jRPG genre).
John Madden

Kefka is as misguided and tragic as the previous Final Fantasy antogonists. Golbez was mind controlled by Zemus. In a similar fashion, Kefka used to be a normal guy, but he was one of the first Magitek Knights and the process wasn't perfected. His madness was the result. He was not inherently evil.

I would say ExDeath is just as evil as Kefka, but doesn't have the maniacal laughter to go with it. That would fall before Kefka's reign. However, I think the Dragonlord from Dragon Quest 1 is the real first villain of the jRPG genre though. He doesn't play as big of a part, but I can still recall when he offered my buddy the chance to rule the world beside him...and when my buddy agreed, he double crossed him and killed him. Classic.

If I had to choose a Mount Rushmore of video game individuals, I don't think you can do just four. You've gotta capture a number of genres, although some are more influential and well known than others...

Shigeru Miyamoto - King of Nintendo, creator of Mario/Link/etc. This is your Action/Platformer representative.

Hironobu Sakaguchi - Creator of the Final Fantasy games, all the good ones anyway. RPG entry here of course. Short of Sakaguchi, I would say Cloud probably fits and is more recognizable.

John Madden - Gotta agree with Woneone here. If you need a figurehead on your mountain to represent Sports games, Madden is probably it. The Madden games changed the genre big time.

Doomguy - This has to be your FPS guy. Master Chief is probably more well known, but not by much and he owes a lot to Doom. Wolfenstein 3D came first (Same company, so not a big deal), but Doom really brought FPS to the mainstream.

Sid Meier - Civilization for RTS genre. There are some RTS games I like more, but Civ is king. Sim City and Age of Empires were there too.

Thrall from World of Warcraft - MMO/MMORPG genre here. Could have gone with one or all of the founders of Blizzard, but I figure Thrall is pretty recognizable. I guess Diablo also works here?

Tetromino - Rather than depict the creators of Tetris, I would put a single Tetromino block for puzzle games.

OutRun Convertible - When I think racing game, OutRun was pretty innovative and you can still find the games in arcades today. Probably could lump Racing in with Sports genre, but I've always separated the two.

Ryu from Street Fighter - Gotta be this for Fighting games.

Minecraft's Steve - Survival. I would also accept Notch, the creator.

PaRappa the Rapper - Now we're talking obscure genres, but there's been a lot of money made in Music/Rhythm games. PaRappa was one of the first templates.

Those cover most genres I think, although there's sub genres and combinations, like MOBAs. If I had to pick 4 for my own personal Rushmore:
Cecil Harvey from Final Fantasy IV
Chosen One from Fallout 2
Little Mac
Darth Vader - Not for any particular game, but more like a representative of all the Star Wars games I've played over the years. My first introduction into flight sims was TIE Fighter, and it also was my first encounter with the Star Wars universe. I hadn't even seen the movies up to that point. That lead to Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi on SNES, Rogue Squadron on 64, X-Wing Alliance, Jedi Knight, Knights of the Old Republic I and II, Star Wars Galaxies (Which I still play), STWOR, Battlefront, Force Unleashed, multiple Lego Star Wars games...the list goes on. When I think about it, I've played more Star Wars games than Mario, Final Fantasy, or any other franchise. They haven't all been winners, but I still play TIE Fighter to this day and love it as much now as I did back then.

While I get what you're saying, I think my underlying point was he was the first villain I actually was trying to beat as a kid, not just beating the game itself.

The murder of Leo, the poisoning of Domo, his outlandish style, that freaking laugh....

Not only that, but he actually succeeded in his plans. You were trying to stop him, failed, and then just trying to avenge his actions. Which, I might add, is one of the reasons why FFVI is the greatest jRPG ever created.

Yes, I said it.

I get ya. Yeah, I love Kefka, he's definitely one of the best if not the best villain in the franchise. I agree about VI too. VII gets a lot of love because it was the first of a new generation and changed the game, but top to bottom VI was just a bit better. IV will always be my favorite though, even if it falls around 5th best in the franchise.

Coincidentally, my daughter is playing VI right now. She just got to the Phantom Forest. It's my "summer reading project" for her . The summer after Kindergarten she played Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. Last summer we did Final Fantasy IV, and over Winter/Spring breaks we did Secret of Mana. Next summer is Chrono Trigger (Which, coincidentally, is the greatest jRPG ever created).

EA used to be so good...they made money by just making great games that people wanted to buy. It's no wonder in recent years they've been nominated and often won the Consumerist "Worst Company in America" tournament.

Not sure if this belongs here or in the "What are you watching?" thread, but anybody watch any League of Legends?

Right now is the mid season world tournament. The team from America just took out the defending world champs from China in the semifinals. This is probably the best performance by any American team in the history of LoL.

Also the matches had a peak live viewership of over 1.3 million excluding China. The game just keeps exploding.

Of course there's a lobbyist that's already fighting it...wonder if this would include Gatcha games? Those are every bit as much gambling as well.

This would both be a good thing and a bad thing in some circles. Some freebie games that rely on micro-transactions would likely have to make people pay just to play, and those that don't or can't would have to fold. EA and the other big dogs aren't going to settle for the loss in revenue if it passes, so we would either see them push the $59.99 price tag for general releases (Unlikely to happen), or they would create more options for "Collector" special releases where they can jack up the price.

EA, Activision, and Bethesda are in for a rude awakening https://kotaku.com/u-s-senator-introduces-bill-to-ban-loot-boxes-and-pay-1834612226 hopefully this gains traction so that the fuck tards at the top of these companies start seeing why we as consumers hate the shit they're pushing out

No thanks. Last thing I want is DC in video games deciding what's moral/appropriate. The market isn't perfect, but for video games its as good as we're probably going to get.

Mega Man 1. Platformers have never been my thing. Sampled a couple MM games growing up and didn’t care for them but lately I’ve had an itch for the series so figured I’d start at the beginning. It’s so frustrating with death after death in spots, even more so when watching YouTube videos of clearing a stage in under four minutes. Beat Cut Man, Guts Man, and Elec Man so far.

Nice! Some of those MM games are very unforgiving. Lots of restarts and learning levels till you know every nook, cranny, and trap.

If you still have the itch after the first, try some of the Mega Man X games. The first one on SNES was good, but I really enjoyed X4, X5, and X6 on Playstation. The stuff that came after wasn't very good, they tried to go 3D and it crashed and burned.

Warped physically and it's messing with the hardware?

Or warped internally and isn't running properly?

Mega Man X Legacy Collection on Switch is the best possible way to play it.

Warped physically. It works fine, but it has a noticeable curvature to the case.

This isn't mine, but it's a good photo of what happened:
