The lease on my current car (2011 CRV) is expiring and I've made the decision to buy a used vehicle. Currently looking for a 2010-2012 vehicle under $20K that can handle snow / light off-roading during fishing trips. I was originally going to get a dirt cheap Civic or Corolla but after the winter this year in Philly I think I need 4WD.

Any suggestions? Currently looking at an Outback, but I don't have any experience with Subies. Any gear heads here? I know basically nothing about cars.

Though we are looking to trade all of them in for a Cadi....

Seriously though, we are both fairly happy with all three of them, including the CRV which would cover your real question.

My Ford Fusion lease is up in July. I really love it and I'd be happy to purchase, but the bullshit fees the dealer is tacking on the lease buyout make it like $2,000 more than it has any business being. I'm definitely paying cash for my next vehicle, as leasing has been nothing but a nightmare and I'll now completely debt-free.

I currently drive a 2007 CRV (that will be traded in soon for a minivan), but my brother drives a Subaru Forester and he loves it (it is his second one, his first was the older box style while this one is the newer body style). I know that he would recommend the Forester as he loves his car.

Eh, I'd stray away from station wagons as they're a tad outdated. If you're looking at Subarus, check out the Crosstrek. Cheaper and slightly better gas mileage.

Jeeps are pretty solid on snow as well, I'd recommend taking a look at the Cherokee or Compass.

Oh no, the CRV does an adequate job but my lease is running out on it. I won't get a good deal on the lease buyout because of fees and I'm having Honda-fatigue as I've driven one my entire life. Kind of want to switch it up a bit.

Gotcha... I have never owned anything but Honda when I think about it... the Corolla is more of my wife's car but I guess I 'own' it... I have a side account for saving up for my 60s/70s muscle car... but yeah... one day.

Consumer Reports' recommendations:

Based on your parameters, I'd go with a 2010 Rav4, Forester, Rogue, Outlander or Mazda5.

Aren't Crosstreks also wagons? They seem to have very similar bodies to an Outback.

They doi look very similar but it's considered a "crossover" actually. I just read some reviews, and they're pretty unfavorable, I thought they were pretty reliable sorry. Like a poster said above, perhaps check out the Forester.

Cool story with the '68. My grandfather had it for about 20 years and he decided to sell it a few years ago when I was on unemployment or was preparing for a plant closing. Christmas Eve 2011, I was browsing Craigslist around 11pm and just happened to search for "turbo." I think it was the 5th ad, I seen the white body and red top and immediately knew what it was. I looked at it on Christmas and agreed to make a couple payments (it was only $1,600), and drove it home mid-January. It won't leave the family again!

2011 Honda Civic. When I drive from NJ to Notre Dame, I get close to 40 MPG. City driving still get close to 30 MPG. It is great.

I've went redneck since I traded in my X5 in 2011. Currently the stable includes 2012 Sahara unlimited, 93 restored Wrangler YJ jacked up 4 inches, and just started restoring a 91 Ford F150 XLT Lariat long bed on 35s. Will likely trend back to an X5 or X6 next year after I finish the F150.

Becoming more and more hick since I moved to Atlanta from Indy.

As to a cheap 4x4. ..... you can pick up a jeep Wrangler in great shape for under 10k easily. TJs and YJs are a plenty. Just make sure you go with an I6. Pretty much bullet proof. I'd recommend a later model YJ. Very very easy to work on and you can find a good one in the 6 to 8k range that needs nothing. 5 - 6k if you want to add a new soft top or used hard top for under 700.
