It's funny this thread was started. My Nissan Sentra lease is up and I'm currently looking for a CUV (compact utility vehicle. One because of the awd and two since I will be having my second child.

I've been looking at four models: Nissan rogue, Mazda cx-5, jeep Cherokee and Subaru forester.

My criteria: bang for my buck, my comfortability driving the car and how the car looks.

All four are great options, but I'm leaning towards the Nissan or the Mazda.

Subaru is nice, but it is the most expensive with the least amenities, plus I thought it was overrated.

The Cherokee was really nice and drove well, but it was the smallest of the group and I need the extra space in the back seat and cargo.

I've owned two Subarus and know a lot of people that own them. I don't think I could find one single Subaru owner that would consider it "overrated". In fact, I can't think of a more reliable vehicle than a Subaru. As their commercials say, 96% of all its cars sold in the last 10 years still on the road. No other car company can say that… not one.

Other cars may have "more amenities", but that is because they aren't built as nice as a Subaru. You pay for the reliability, imo.

There is no way in hell one of the Nissan or Mazda models are half as reliable as a Subaru.

I hear that, but I'm going to lease the car so reliability of the life time of the car is not a factor to me.

Good point. If you are leasing, then reliability isn't as important.

That being said, resale value is important. It's what will judge what your residual will be on your vehicle. Something to think about.

I think a lot of people that leased Kia's or Hyandia (not a knock on them, they both make some nice cars now.) when they first came out can tell you a cautionary tale of leasing a subpar brand simply for the ability to get more creature comforts. You can pay for it on the front end, but sometimes you pay for it on the back end.

Do you have an opinion on the Outback vs Forester decision? They seem very similar in almost all aspects (including the basic profile of the car), except the Forester is cheaper.

I am also looking at a new car.

I would like to spend around 12K, but that comes with ~ 40K miles for what I'm looking at. With that in mind, I figure I might as well buy a brand new Mazda3 for $18,000. Does anyone have any thumbs up or down on this car?

Also, I've never bought new before. It says they 'start as low as ~16K', but then when I search I can't find them cheaper than $18K. What gives? Any advice on when to buy, how to negotiate, will be showered with reps!

It is true that those types of vehicles can start that low, however, dealerships aren't going to stock those types because they don't move nearly as fast as one a couple thousand more that has WAY more features.

All I care about is power steering, windows, and doors, lol. $18K is already more than I want to pay, but I'll do it if it's going to last ~4 more years than a used car.

Browse around and test drive the cars you like in the middle of the month. After you drive them, do some some research, compare/contrast and make your decision. Go back to the dealership on the last business day of the month and be ready to buy. Dealerships/salesman are trying to meet quota and they'll cut ridiculous deals to get it done.

My buddy just bought a new Nissan and the sale was arranged through Costco. I don't know the specifics, but he told me he got a good deal (not a great deal) and he wasn't hassled by a salesman. If you're already a member, maybe it's worth a minute to research further.

An update on my situation:

I don't love my 2011 CRV but the economically sound decision is to buy out the lease. It only has 27k miles on it and I can get it for around $15K. The used cars I've been looking at with comparable mileage all are listed around $18-20K. So here's to another 5-10 years with my trusty Honda.
