I tried some new bourbon this week. I bought a bottle of Willet, which comes in a very cool bottle shaped like a pot still. I've heard good things about it, so I was underwhelmed when I tried it. It's not bad, Willet is a solid bourbon. But there just wasn't as much going on as I'd hoped. It didn't outperform Buffalo Trace or Eagle Rare, IMO, even though it was $10 more per bottle. It was smooth and balanced for being 94 proof, though.
I tried Michter's yesterday, and that was a punch in the face. The alcohol heat just overshadowed everything, even after I dropped in a little cold water. Again, not a bad bourbon, but not as good as I was led to believe. I wouldn't have it again; that alcohol burn was just too much.
