Haha, dammit jimmy, I tried to recommend a couple drinks that were just sweet enough to be delicious without exposing you to this kind of ridicule ...

#9 is great though, I don't care if people think real men don't drink fruity beers.

There are plenty of ways to reconcile those tastes with drinks that won't invite ridicule.

Sweet? Try an Old Fashioned with a wheated whiskey (Old Weller 12y) and orange bitters.

Fruity? Pick up a Belgian Quad.

Avoid stuff that's suited for a cocktail umbrella.

Oh man, great call on the Old Fashioned.

Many discerning beer drinkers will be with you on the Belgian Quads (I had some Ommegang Three Philosophers recently that I loved) but there's a certain set of what I'll call "neighborhood" guys that sticks to the blanket rule of no fruit in beer. Telling them its Belgian only makes it worse. I'm speaking from experience.

I'm not sure how they manage it, but the Whole Foods near my office sells bombers of Three Philosophers for $6.50. Sort of feels like stealing at that price.

I've always understand that to mean no fruit in the beer, like a lime wedge in your Corona or an orange wedge in your Belgian wit. It evokes the effeteness of cocktail umbrellas,so I can sort of see the basis for it; most hardcore beer aficionados frown on the practice as well, since citric acid kills the head, which in turn is detrimental to a beer's smell and appearance.

But a rule against any fruitiness in beer? That counts out a huge range of ales; if I recall correctly, ales are naturally fruity due to the top-fermenting (ale) yeasts used to produce them. Then again, the only people who actually try to enforce these rules tend to drink nothing but American Adjunct Lagers, so maybe they do proscribe all ales.

Haha this reminds me of my 21st. My a$$hole friend asked the bartender what was the worst shot he knew of. The bartender suggested cheap vodka with cream and lemon. The lemon curdles the cream and makes one big disgusting blob that sticks in your throat. He gave me the shot and I nearly puked from sheer disgust. Hopefully jimmymac's friends are nicer than mine ...

Worse yet - I was stationed in Germany at age 18 - went to war in Iraq - got out 3 weeks before my 21st birthday - not old enough to drink -wtf

Holy hell, I probably paid twice that. It might be a go-to beer if I could get it at that price.

Yep, I'm talking about the Budweiser crowd here.

I went on an Irish pub crawl in Philly yesterday. I had some of the usual suspects that have already been discussed (e.g. Red Breast, Powers, Harp). I had 2 whiskies of note. One was Concannon, which is an Irish whiskey produced by the Cooley distillery. As with most other Cooley products, I was disappointed. Cooley puts out harsh-tasting, unrefined whiskey that is a chore to drink straight. I was actually reading an article about Irish whiskey at the bar and a quote about Cooley puts a finger on the problem, "Cooley is basically a Scotch distiller located in Ireland." That's not entirely accurate (I do like some Scotch) but its close enough. I respect that Cooley is trying to do things differently, but they come up short more often than not.

The other Irish I had was Greenore Single Grain. It's good stuff, smooth and pleasant. It doesn't have the full-bodied complexity of a pot still like Red Breast, but that doesn't make it a dull dram. It's a solid whiskey with real taste to it.

Yeah! I saw OAR 7 times from 7th grade through 12th. They used to play up in Cleveland (where I grew up) all the time when they were at OSU. I saw them on Thursday for the first night of their tour. It was freaking amazing. They still rock. They have some new brass players that are stellar as well.

Last night I had some Mission Brewing El Conquistador Extra Pale Ale. A decent summer beer that is really light and fruity as well as sessionable at 4.8%.

Boulevard Brewing The Sixth Glass Quadrupel. Still not a huge fan of this beer even after letting it rest for a couple of months.

I bought a bottle of their Love Child #3 this past weekend and I can't wait to try it later this week.

Hangar 24 Local Fields Essence. A DIPA brewed with naval oranges, blood oranges and grapefruit grown locally.

A very sweet nose full of oranges and tangerine. The palate is more bitter with loads of grapefruit and some pine. Overall an interesting beer but it is good (think 83-86 points).
