Damn, it's getting expensive to drink higher end whiskey. I was doing a price audit on the bar and, holy crap. Redbreast 12 is over $60. I could get that for less than $40 not that long ago. Some other stuff I can't believe is topping out past $100, that you used to be able to pick up for 60-70 bucks not even 5 years ago. Part of the blame is Virginia liquor tax rate, which is one of the highest in the country. Plus, all the demand is making it hard to drink good whiskey without having to give up other stuff; like paying your utility bills. I blame all the pretentious borderline alcoholics out there; like the posters in this thread. Soon, stuff like Old Crow and Natty Light will become premium-priced luxuries.

Pkt's already started on Old Crow...this is a bad sign.

I'm sorry I didn't know you were ancient.

I use budweiser to cook occasionally and will get it for the 4th or Memorial Day maybe, but PBR is my non-craft go-to.

Old guys rule! You young guys just think you do.

PBR...................haven't tasted that since like 1968 or 69 when I was in HS. Is it still that bad? lol

Agreed actually, though not with the second part. I know I don't rule.

I wouldn't call PBR bad, but it definitely ain't GOOD.

You guys are crazy.

PBR is a solid beer, but its reputation is being ruined by hipsters.

It's inoffensive, but I'm not going out of my way to get PBR. Don't lower your standards.

I feel the same in terms of not going out of my way, but "Solid" = "Good" to me.

I'll drink Budweiser or Bud Light if I'm planning on being on the couch watching football from 12pm-2am, but PBR is a completely acceptable substitute if you want to change it up, or if you have a friend that keeps it stocked.

I would classify those as "good" in the context of what they're used for.

PBR can only be considered "solid" if compared to other mass market light lagers. Compared to beer as a whole, it's a 4 out of 10 if I'm being very generous.

Stop degrading the English language with your filth! When I say good beer, I mean something I actually think should be held as a model for other beers, in some sort or fashion. As in, brewers should take note and try to make a beer that can stand up to the good beer.

If I call any beer that I will drink "good", then that simply dilutes the term.

I tried to note clearly that PBR is solid/good within the context of "drinking high quantities of crappy light beer all day during college football." That is a whole different entity than "drinking good beer for taste." I will not have by beer culture put into question!

In the world of beer as a whole, I'd not even go with a 4. I'd say a 3, and still feel uncomfortable because of how many amazing beers are out there.

Agree:

"Good" denotes something that you think is better than most others. There are other words to describe what those PBR/Bud Light heretics are getting at:

-Acceptable
-Mediocre
-Decent
-Average

PBR is fine. It's like Old Style or Narragansett or Olympia. Better than the mass-market light beers, cheaper than the mass-market light lagers (Bud Heavy, Coors Banquet). The beer to have after you've had a couple. There's certainly a place for it in my beer diet, and I buy it regularly, without irony. But it's not the first thing I crack open after work on a Friday.

Haha! Exactly. I buy PBR all the time because you can get a 4-pack of 16 ouncers for $4.99 at my corner gas station. Like a lot of lagers, it's good with food because it doesn't overwhelm. It's pretty good, but not great.

I also drink a lot of Banquet Beer because of the mythology of it (Fletch, Smokey and the Bandit, so many 1970s college parties), and because it is the anti-hipster beer. It's strangely sweet, but I enjoy it.

I stopped drinking Bud Lite because they hired what's her name to do the advertisements. Can't stand that woman.

Craft beers are obviously the best when they are good, but they are expensive and often heavy, and sometimes they just get lazy and overdo the hops. I still love a great Belgian Ale, like a Chimay.

And this should be in the "what are you drinking thread."

what is your go to beer? I always see you in the beer thread with the newest shiny craft beer but never sticking to one or two beers

Late August / early September are peak PBR time. Your mind is ready to move to football but the weather isn't quite there yet. You start the smoker up at 9am and suck down a few PBRs while you cut the grass before heading inside for the noon kickoffs.

I know you're not asking me, but ever since I discovered fresh beer, I don't see myself ever going back. I have four breweries within 15 minutes of my house (Witchdoctor, Kinsmen, Relic, and Firefly Hollow) and it's way too easy to grab a growler or two on the way home from work on Friday afternoons.

Nope, false, you're fucking wrong. F*CK THE MODS if this gets moved! It's too important to move.

"I tell you thing and...I hate going on about it...but it's not a good look in recruiting..the optics, the optics of that.. are very bad"

Reading all of this in Mike's voice is way too funny.

I like to try everything, because there's just so much variety. I'm down on Lagunitas, Live Oak's stuff, 512 and other stuff around here. It just depends on if I'm out or not. I love IPAs, but I'll drink plenty of other beers too.

That's the problem down here. It's never football weather, it's always too damn hot for it.

Windows are open and the AC is off until June. I slept like a dead man last night.

Miller High Life is hands down the best value in macro beers.

Going back to my college days the go-to was the place near me that sold 12-packs of 40oz Ole E' for a hair under $20. Could get myself a decent drunk for $3.20 and they didn't taste half bad.

I also enjoy the Banquet Beer but it can be hard to find here in the Northeast. High Life is good but only in bottles. You know what's tasty and has gotten really cheap? Rolling Rock. A- InBev practically gives it away..
Agree on craft beer. It is clearly superior, but gets pricey, and a lot of brewers have gotten too hop-centric.

This is why ND is no longer THE program. Too many of the fans settle for mediocrity in their lives, including their beer and football team!
