I thought about that and then thought... nah, no one was saying that in 2008... lol

You say that, but our guys are saying they want to go undefeated next year after going 4-8 in 2016. It's like...we put these expectations on the team year in and year out. It's no wonder the fan base is categorized as delusional.

He came to USC after five years at Washington. Also spent time with Houston Texans in similar role.

Wouldn't make sense to hire him, he brings way to much energy and enthusiasm

I'm too drunk to go in depth on this, but I've been skeptical of his work for years.

However, I'm not too drunk to see that we're less athletic than a team that thrives on 1/2 star players, and this is not uncommon, unfortunately.

Don't think the team was slow. Not strong enough? Yes. Worn down and unconditioned? Yes.

Have to give to Koon though. He was on this 3+ years ago.

I think I should give up my title of prophet to Koon...

Pfft, even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Even so, I don't necessarily think our strength and conditioning is that bad. Obviously we don't have a real speed problem, we've seen some players like Will take off in the program. We've seen our OL get leaner and stronger. Maybe not all players are buying into it, and I'm not sure that's a problem with the players or the program itself.

So we've seen some players excel in the speed and strength areas. Worn down and unconditioned? I could see that possibly being an issue. I wonder how much of that is a function of the offense we run though? Our offense never looks that gassed, it's usually the defense. Why is the defense gassed? Because we throw the ball a lot which equates to less clock time eaten up and more plays for the defense over the course of a game. In games where we threw far less, like the LSU game, our defense actually fared pretty well (Aside from the big Fournette plays that were given up due to poor angles/alignment). We went in with a commitment to the running game, we were physical, and the depleted defense didn't look so defeated by the end of the game.

One thing I have always noticed is the lack of exceptional skeletal muscle on many of our players. Outside of the obvious few, our linemen, both DL and OL, tend to look pretty unimpressive. With the exception of that prior TE (jeez cant recall his name to save my life...nickname was Hercules), most our TEs look like normal people just taller.

I know it is comparing apples to oranges but oftentimes look at the OSU or Bama guys and wonder if ND players lift weights at all.

Skeletal muscle - Wikipedia

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skeletal_muscle

Skeletal muscle is one of three major muscle types, the others being cardiac muscle and smooth muscle. It is a form of striated muscle tissue which is under the voluntary control of the somatic nervous system. Most skeletal muscles are attached to bones by bundles of collagen fibers known as tendons.

Whatever our guys lack in skeletal muscle, they make up in the cardiac department.

Is there any data available to the public on that? I have a hard time believing that we are 'stronger'. Now, strength is sort of relative term . I mean, if a starting o-lineman benched 315 in June and benched 325 in August, did he get stronger? Yes, is he strong? no, not really.

If there's no data, then your position is equally weak. When this team has the right mindset, they've proven they can be dominant in the trenches, thereby proving their strength. Obviously we didn't have a lot of that this season. We've proven at times we can be more physical than LSU, USC, Stanford, and other powerhouses. Are we consistent? No, but imo that has more to do with the mental strength of this team. In any case, that's what I'm basing my opinion on.

A Strength and a Conditioning coach can't magically make players faster.

Dumbass

It wouldn't be too hard to test the theory. Simply chart out the 40-yard dash time of recruits coming out of high school. Then compare those times to the same individuals four or five years later at the NFL combine. Sort by program, and then analyze whether programs like Alabama, Oregon, etc. saw markedly larger increases in player speed than ND.

I enjoyed this, after everything we've seen recently about how every fast recruit runs in the mid 4.4's or lower at the all american games, combines, the Opening, etc., but then the NFL combine every year only has a few guys that actually run sub 4.4 lol

If we actually used this theory (with a terrible baseline to begin with due to lack of consistent timing on 40's), every program would be making their players slower over the course of three or four years lol.

This was a fun thread. Love you Wiz.

Koon good work.

IrishPat was right about Goff in a weird way.

LAX was beating the "Diaco is a shit recruiter" drum early and often.

Those top-25 QB lists are hilarious in retrospect.
