We knew Jayson A was going to be an impact player but didn’t know about Justin. Glad to be proved wrong. He looks the part physically already as a true freshman. Excited for him and Ade O as our ends once the ‘16 class leaves.

Yeah. Was good to see them both in there making plays. Shayne Simon played some meaningful minutes as well. I saw in the box score he had 3 or 4 tackles.
Our defensive depth really showed last night as guys got banged up.

You have to LOVE the fact that Notre Dame is coming out of the half out coaching the other side. It seems like the third quarter in the bigger games have been very good to us.

Long and Lea are rolling right now!

The VT quarterback looked like Ryan Leaf, but played like Big Ben with his hair on fire. I kept worrying about a target penalty when he continued to dive forward and run with his head down. Kudos to him for keeping them in the game. If he continues to start, i'll keep an eye on his progress.

Amazing that ND still was able to achieve 200+ yds rushing last night considering how bad the first half went on the ground.

Total net offense was ND: 438 VT: 441 but keep in mind ND ran almost 20 fewer offensive plays 67 vs 85.

EDIT: oops ND ended up w/ 167 yards rushing NET...my bad. Still a helluva accomplishment considering how stout VT’s rush D had been (granted vs inferior foes). I was hoping for at least 150.

Simon & Jason Ademilola both played last night effectively burning their redshirts.

Others who have burned their RS: Bo Bauer, Houston Griffith, Tariq Bracy & Kevin Austin.

They had 167 yds which included the 16 yd loss on the botched punt. Back that out and the Irish had 183 yds total. Subtract Dexter's 97 yd run and ND had just 86 yds on 30 carries for a 2.9 ypc.

Dexter netted 178 yards rushing. Subract is 97 yd TD run and still netted 81 which doesn’t sound great until you realize how bottled up he was in the first half. The Bars injury is going to continue to adversely affect the offense until his replacement(s) get reps & hopefully stem the tide.

I underestimated Willis' ability to run it. He looked quite mobile and is a big dude. Not quite Big Ben big, but still a guy who can bulldoze his way for a few yards.

With so many points left on the field, that's phenomenal. This year's team just seems different.

As far as Metallica and such, most of our fans would love some sort of entrance the way they did. We'd love to have a crowd that excited and loud. Metallica may be old but something along those lines would be sweet.
And if you want to hate them from where they're from, when that song came out the bass man was from Michigan. #FuckMichigan

Postgame Thoughts:
1) ND was well prepared going into another "hostile" environment. Kudos to the coaches for getting them prepared (Kelly played Enter Sandman at practice during the week).
2) When our backs were against the wall ND responded: bad snap for the punt (VT only got 3 points out of it), backed up into our own territory (97 yard run by Dex), Okwara getting ejected (others stepping up).
3) Can you imagine if ND could've gotten 4 years out of Dex with the way he is currently playing?
4) At the end of the year ND needs to open up their checkbook and pay Clark Lea.
5) Ian Book is building a great chemistry with Miles Boykin.
6) For freshman the Ademilola twins are contributing when called upon.
7) Another day at the office for these boys doing what they do-- Book, Dex, Khalid, Love. They all get better each week.
8) I am not a Metallica fan, but do like certain songs. I have to admit VA Tech's entrance is pretty cool.

We are 6-0, go Irish!!

Defense held it together when the offense struggled

Offense hit some adversity, figured it out (on the road in a tough environment) and still hung 45 on a ranked team in their house

The 2 deep on defense is really doing a great job. I was scared when Okwara went out, but it was hard to notice in the 2nd half as others stepped up

The talent is there to play with anyone right now. I always felt like we had at least one weak link in the defense, but this year we are strong at every level

The special teams (bad snap notwithstanding) has quietly been fairly solid. As long as they don’t lose us games, I’m happy

Dexter Williams is a game changer. His presence really helps, but ........

Book is the real reason this is working. No longer do teams basically dare us to throw. We have an accurate passer that makes good decisions on time. That stresses everything for opposing defenses. I feel like this team can beat you in so many different ways

How about the recent recruiting. I realize there will always be misses, but the fact that our D line is so deep and our secondary is really good is a huge turnaround and makes all the difference

Things are rolling right now better than they have since the early 90’s and it’s fun to watch. The frustration I had watching (a kid I really like) in Wimbush struggling and so obviously limiting this very good team was irritating. All credit to BK for doing what was best for this team and my sanity!

Rocking out to Enter Sandman after the game... my God we dunked on this team so hard. I don't know if I've ever seen an ND team punk somebody this bad... Liam Eichenberg talking shit pre-game, ND Twitter unplugging the amp, and rocking out in their locker room to their song. #savage

Its really is weird. I don't recall them ever being this cocky before/after a game before. Not even against a rival. I just hope they can back it up all year long.

put this in the Book thread, but dropping it here too.

Re-watched the O series today....

For those that were down on Book during the game... All of his misses indexed and described below if you'd like re-watch. I think in fairness, not as bad as some might think, and he was overall 71% for goodness sakes....

In short, going to chalk a few up to Book, a few up to bad routes / miscommunication, and a few to pressure by the D. Being this was only his 3rd game, easy to think timing with the WRs will improve. And, this was on the road in Blacksburg. I hope the coaches continue to call for more long balls vs Pitt and Navy to work on timing and chemistry. Wish they wouldn't have done so much @VT.

Book's incompletes/INT

1Q 7:35 Over thrown to Miles Boykin. Boykin zagged after the ball was in the air
1Q 7:02 Over the head of Boykin. Book got hit. Boykin did not get a good jump.
1Q 0:21 Over thrown to Finke. While Book was in throwing motion, Finke did a hesitation zag
2Q 14:34 Over thrown to Boykin. Even the announcers said Boykin got tied up in traffic and couldn't get there
2Q 8:11 Over thrown to Claypool. Book stepped up as the pocket was collapsing. Book threw to outside of DB, Claypool was inside.
2Q 7:21 Over thrown in traffic to Boykin. Boykin IMO stops too early to set up and jump between two DBs. If he takes two more steps, the timing would have been perfect.
2Q 5:52 INT. Book has DEs from both side coming at him, and DB cut the route. Would not have hit the WR even if not INT'd
2Q 3:14 Incomplete and grounding call. Book was rolling back with Safety blitzer in his face immediately.
2Q 2:30 Overthown. Not sure what WR as the vid did not capture the routes. Book under 5 man blitz and got drilled by MLB spy
Book did not have another incompletion until
3Q 7:20 Over thrown to Boykin. This on all on Book but was not not far off.
3Q 1:47 Incomplete to Claypool. Claypool turned inside, the ball was outside.

On another note....
1Q 8:01 hit Finke in stride 40 yards in the air

I love the swagger. I just hope they can close the deal in the 2nd half. As long as they can stay focused and not get cocky (different from confident swagger), I'm all for this type of stuff. Having fun!!

Book missed some easy downfield throws and that has to be cleaned up, but (and that’s big but) this team with this defense does not quit and we are ENDING teams in the second half. Completely finishing them. He’s part of that and so is the defense. This team is unlike many Kelly teams we’re used to.

That’s my takeaway

God why can't they act like they've been there before and act like the blue haired boomer fan base demands, with class?

This team is committed and proud and that’s my favorite part. They really care about being great, not just ok with being good. It’s a different makeup of a group.

If I had one “what if” moment, it’s that I just wish Lea would’ve coached Jaylon Smith. He might have been the best LB college football has ever seen, and I really mean that. Great coach and generational talent.

Isn’t that the point though, this isn’t a one dimensional offense. They took it away but we had “chunk” plays and made up for it eventually. They are finishing teams over time. You have to defend this offense for 4 qtrs. and obviously teams can’t or haven’t yet

The complete opposite reaction I had. They should be proud of what they are doing and they clearly understand what’s on the line. You have to enjoy what you accomplish, otherwise you won’t want to do it.

I love the confidence and swagger the team is playing with. The hallmark of BK teams (prior to last year) was treating every game like a corporate board meeting and the Weis teams were too busy getting their teeth kicked in to have any confidence. It's college football, they should be having fun first and foremost.

I wouldn't call it cocky, I think this team is confident, they believe in themselves and it is showing on the field. The team in having fun and they are clicking on both sides of the ball.

I forgot to add to my postgame thoughts, but when ND made the change from Wimbush to Book there were local stories that Book was more of a short-passing QB and didn't have the arm strength for being a deep ball passer. I like how Book was gutsy showing he does have an arm to throw the deep ball vs VA Tech. Just think if he starts connecting on his deep passes....

Was out of town and missed first 3 quarters. Awesome outcome against a pretty tough team traditionally. Like the vibe ND has going right now....just take care of the next one and then we get a break.

I didn’t take it as cocky at all. These guys are still kids, and are having fun. Winning any game is still big. They got told all week that an 80’s metal song was going to punk them, and it’s just a little clap back to talking heads.

Before = Miami last year
After = No one else last year

That demon has not been exorcised yet.

And the team knows it. Playoffs or bust.

But heck yeah, let’s have fun getting there!

I think it was 91 or 92 ;)

My kids high school football team use it to come out to as well. It didn't seem like a big deal to me. It's a great metal song that gets you pumped up. Better than the stupid Clemson players running down the hill thing.

Metallica was the Led Zeppelin of the 1980s. It was the underground band that the cool kids were listening too while others were listening to the pop radio music of the day. They were the biggest band in the world by the time Enter Sandman came out and had only ONE music video.....in the era of the music video.

No...
Love them, but I would not compare them to Zep. Probably more like Black Sabath, Judas Priest, or Motorhead.

Uh no!!!!

Not even in the same league.

I think VT's pregame hype is pretty cool, but given their losing record at home against ranked teams I wonder how the stadium got it's reputation for being one of the toughest places to play?

I like this teams attitude and don't see them not being ready for anyone left on the schedule. After the Stanford win, VT was the place to stub their toe.
