I think Jordan is the greatest, but not everyone else does. If there’s doubt, you don’t get the number retired. A statue is enough.
Honestly, I think the only sport where 90% of the fans agree on who the greatest is, would be hockey with Gretzky.

Seems stupid to retire a college jersey. Someone who only played 4 (at most) significant seasons of ball. Makes sense for a pro team where a guy can be there for a decade or more.
Right? I just looked. In his entire (two-year) USC career Caleb Williams beat two ranked teams, one of which was quarterbacked by Drew Pyne. For that, he's an immortal?

How about Irish Heisman winners....I see Tim Brown gets love, but everybody forgets about the old timers.....best 2 on that list might be Lujack and Hart.

Angelo Bertelli 48
Johnny Lujack 32
Leon Hart 82
Johnny Lattner 14
Paul Hornung 5
John Huarte 7
Tim Brown 81
How dare you disrespect the Irish by putting their names in the USC thread!

And lost to Tulane in a bowl game the year he won the heisman.

More than 90% believe Jordan is the greatest.
Nobody will have “everybody.”
They’re A LOT of hockey fans who think Orr is the greatest.
And hardly any baseball fans view Jackie Robinson as top 10. And he wasn’t the first to break the color barrier.

The fact that LeBron wore 23 because of Jordan tells you all you need to know about that number.

As Dennis Miller once said, they shouldn’t retire the jersey number 23, they should just retire the actual number 23. Teach kids to count 20, 21, 22, 24…

90% of people over the age of 40. I see a ton of people arguing for James.
I grew up in the city of Chicago and was in high school during the first three championships. I had the freaking life size Jordan poster you got from Chevy dealers. There wasn't a bigger fan.

A statue is enough for MJ.

Are they only retiring his number because he won the Heisman? What else did he do to warrant that cause I can think of a number of USC players I would do this for before his number is retired.

I bet if he was a second round draft pick he wouldn’t get this treatment. But he went #1 overall and it raises their profile in recruiting to be associated with that.

If he turns into a Hall of Famer, that works out. If he's just another mid NFL quarterback, in five years they'll be wondering why they retired this guy's number.

Lincoln Riley couldn't care less about USC's traditions and history. He might not even be there in 2 years. This is all about creating an event to highlight his QB development track record for recruiting purposes.

Gracious, I'm sure glad I never bought the hype on him when SC fans were bragging

I mean, fuck USC, and clearly nothing matters anymore. But also this thing where guys (guys who play!) just quit on their team in the middle of the season is really bad and wrong, and a bastardization of a rule that's intended to help players who get hurt, or help true freshman who see the field a few times, to preserve their eligibility.
I hope USC deactivates his student ID. And I suspect a lot of programs will think long and hard before taking on a player who does this.

It is a huge flaw with NIL and the transfer portal. It's basically unregulated now and the school is at the kid's mercy for decision making. Kids can get NIL money and get up and leave whenever they want. That's why there are contracts in pro sports to prevent this bs. This problem is going to get worse in NCAA football until effective boundaries and more enforceable regulation is implemented. It's almost unfathomable that NIL is similar to the wild wild west in college football and it's 2024.

Brian Kelly and Lincoln Riley both left big jobs for bigger ones (supposedly bigger). Who do you think lasts the longest and/or finds the most success? —
Jonathan G.

The jury is still out on Kelly. I don’t like LSU’s chances of reaching the Playoff, or even coming close, this season, as its 96th-ranked defense still has to face Ole Miss, Alabama, Texas A&M and, yes, Vanderbilt, all of whom are capable of putting up a bunch of points. And that will lead to much angst on the Bayou.

But this was always viewed as a bridge year to 2025, when the nation’s No. 1 QB, Bryce Underwood, arrives, and some of the current first- and second-year players LSU is having to play on defense get some experience. Also, Kelly has the continued support of athletic director Scott Woodward, the man who moved heaven and earth to get Kelly to Baton Rouge. Let’s check back on his status a year from now.

An eventual USC-Riley divorce feels more plausible. It’s proved to be a bad fit. And it’s not just the losses. Riley’s thin skin and defensiveness don’t play well in a pro market like L.A. After the Minnesota game, he got snippy with a reporter who asked an innocuous question to fifth-year defensive end Jamil Muhammad about a critical moment in the game, when officials initially ruled Gophers quarterback Max Brosmer didn’t cross the goal line on his go-ahead QB sneak. Though not a major controversy, it fuels the skepticism that has been building since last season as to whether he’s up to the job.

In Riley’s case, current USC AD Jen Cohen did not hire Riley. That doesn’t mean she’s going to fire him if the Trojans go 7-5. She probably can’t, as it’s believed he has more than $80 million remaining on his original contract. USC does not have Texas A&M oil money. So like Kelly, I’d expect Riley back in 2025 unless he forms his exit plan. I’m less optimistic about 2026 and beyond.

Fun little question on The Athletic today
