How come Saban, Harbaugh, Meyer, Stoops, Fisher, Miles, Tomlin, Strong or anyone else at a Top 20 job didn't upgrade? It's a Top 5 job, gets Top 5 classes every year and has perfect weather. What is stopping them from having a Top 20 coach if it's a Top 5 job?

Uh....

Saban has a top 5 job. So does Strong. So does Urban.

Harbaugh is an alum of Michigan.

Stoops and Fisher have top 10 jobs. You don't leave 10 for 5 without a very good reason. Les Miles basically same thing.

Mike Tomlin? What

You do realize that's why everyone is saying it's a bad hire right? Also, you're crazy if you don't think USC is a top five CFB spot.

Strong and Miles had ALL the reason in the world to upgrade. When Strong ends up at Miami does that make it a better job than SC or is he just crazy?

Mike Tomlin has a Top 10 job by every metric. Salary, money, support, fans, facilities, program history. SC doesn't compare to the package A&M offers.

Kirk Ferentz is undefeated, why wasn't he in the running? Why isn't James Franklin on the next flight out of Happy Valley? Mark Dantonio... Can't even finish #1 in the popularity poll in his own state when he wins the B1G? Why wouldn't he upgrade? He's not a Michigan St man. Why wasn't any coach at a Top 25 job in the running or given the chance?

WOOF. At least make it a 2-year or 3-year deal, you had all the leverage...
That would hurt recruiting though. If you have huge satchels of cash like USC does wouldn't you invest in giving the next coach a real shot?

So you would pass up millions more to live in the rat race of downtown LA and coach at place with horrible facilities and deal with the daily brain damage that comes with that program?

What metrics make SC a Top 5 job?

SC will never win an intelligent CBA against the blue bloods from the B1G, SEC, ACC or the Big 12.

I know it is hard to admit as they are our rival and all, but USC is absolutely one of the best jobs in the country. Definitely top 5.

Wtf are you talking about dude?

Being a top 5 job does not mean every coach at jobs 6 through 25 would or should leave their current job to take it. You don't uproot your family to take a job that is only somewhat better than the one you have now. Half the coaches you named are like 60 years old. They aren't going to take a new job now and USC wouldn't want them to.

James Franklin isn't a great coach...probably why USC didn't give him a call.

Texas A&M is not a better job than USC LOL.

Honestly one of the worst posts I've seen on here recently. You're not even making sense. Are you trying to say because they didn't hire a top 25 coach it isn't a top 25 job? This is why we are all confused by their decision

Oklahoma, ND, Texas, USC, Ohio State, Michigan, Alabama, USC, maybe Georgia are all elite jobs. You can squeeze them all in/our of a top 5 all you want, but each one is elite and has something on the other.

You haven't given any metric why you think it's a Top 5 job.

Don't try to put words in my mouth about it not being a Top 25 job.

You have an opinion and 2 others have agreed with you, there must be various easy to explain reasons why it's a Top 5 job.

I don't think it's all that bad of a hire.

1) the last two big-time coaches they hired failed.
2) the kids clearly rallied behind him and improved during the rest of the season.

Sure, they could have easily went out and gotten another big-time coach but this is not a terrible move to try out something new. IMO.

AD Pat didn't want to stickk his neck out too far and be on the hoof for a major buyout. Too many of those can get you fired.

There aren't many. I would put ND, USC, tOSU, AL, TX as my top five.

OK, UM, LSU, maybe GA are just below them.

I love ND with all my heart, but I don't think most coaches themselves would rate it a top 5 job. Good pay but others are higher...good recruits but not all elite want to "play school" the way ND requires...very few cupcakes

I absolutely agree with you. My thought on ND being in that top five is if you can win a natty here you are in the highest of all hierarchy of college coaches.

EDIT: Your point is why I am scared of that day when CBK leaves.

Those lists are so subjective. One of those articles was from 2011. Florida probably wouldn't be near the top given their status since Urbie left.

This is what makes ND a top 5 job for me as well. If you win a title at Florida you are great, if you win one at ND you are a legend for all time.

It's not. Just because you see it as a program that has a Top 5 chance of winning a national championship when someone competent is in charge doesn't make it a Top 5 job.

Tradition, location, recruiting base, kids knocking down the door to get in, deep alumni pockets. Get your head out of your ass.

Wow, Haden really is a double agent for ND.

With that move, Haden has now done more for Notre Dame than Kevin White did.

hahahahah so true so true

LOL

I always do that. Too funny.

I'll respond in further detail when I'm by a keyboard, but I couldn't disagree with you more here. Nothing personal, but it absolutely 1000% is a MUCH better job than you're giving it credit for. I'd say easily top 5, but it's all opinion anyway. But I can't believe you're so adamant about this, when you're clearly in the minority if you ask cfb people around the nation.

Thinking off the top of my head that it's a top 5 job.... below is solely my opinion. Coming from the standpoint of attractiveness to coaches (salary potential, history, alumni support, recruiting, facilities, etc.). Assumes a coach believes he can restore the glory if relevant.

Bama
Texas
Ohio St
OK
USC
LSU
FSU
Michigan
UCLA
TN
FL
UGA
ND
Auburn
Clemson
Mich St
Oregon

... my uneducated gut feel.... nothing more. tried also to remove my homer-ness of ND in placing them.

I rarely agree with koon on anything but this is correct IMO. If I rank according to resources available, fan base, ability to recruit elite local talent and pull elite kids in from across the country, relatively desirable location.....

Texas
Michigan
USC
ND
Oklahoma
OSU
UGA
Alabama (if anyone other than Saban is coaching, things become a little less easy IMO).
