We tried to get into the B1G/Western Conference. It's Michigan's fault! On the plus side it helped created the greatest out of conference rivalry /w USC and Notre Dame. It's a little different today too. Information wasn't as readily available about teams year in and year out, the pecking order wasn't as established, etc.

In the last 4 years The Bison have beaten KU, Minnesota, CSU, and now KSU.

So much for the whiners that complain an NCAA Death Penalty kills a program because you have to 85 scholarship to even compete much less win. NDSU is a 1AA program today but only have been since 2008. Prior to that they were in Division II.

Div 1A gets 85 scholarships
Div 1AA gets 63
Div II gets 36

To be fair, if a powerhouse is only able to beat Minnesota, Kansas, etc, the Death Penalty most certainly killed them.

They are a non-FBS school. Each one of those schools scheduled NDSU as a "sure win" gimme type game. They are 7-3 all time against FBS schools and have won the FCS the last two seasons.

That's remarkable, imo.

SMU got the death penalty in 1986.

Boise became a 1A member in 1996 and have 2 Fiesta Bowl wins since then.

South Florida got their first football in 1997 as 1AA member. Four years later they jumped to 1A.
