(1) ALL defensive backs give up yards and points in modern college football. The game is so spread out, pass happy, and high scoring, that it's unfair to compare today's DBs with the guys 10 years ago. There are not a ton of 20-14 games anymore. Its more like 35-30. It's also more difficult to tackle because of targeting rules, plus, WRs are more likely to go for balls over the middle now that they don't worry as much about pure headhunting. Long story short, there are going to be big plays and long TDs, even when ND's DBs are playing sound football.
(2) Offensive lines rarely look dominant on a play-to-play basis. Alabama, Georgia, FSU, and LSU get stuffed a lot when they make it clear they intend to run. "Run-first" is about setting a tone, wearing the other team down, and opening up the passing game. The idea that a good offensive line can just "impose its will" and gain 5 yards at a time against a quality D-Line is pure fantasy (unless you are Navy). Don't assume our line is under-performing if we aren't averaging 225 rushing yards a game.
